I think it is the brands loss. You'd be an amazing brand ambassador. It amazes me that they don't look for women who are fabulous and more relate-able to so many people, women who actually have money to spend.

On the other hand, glad you have the time to spend with us and with clients.

I finally had a chance to read the piece, and enjoyed the humour and musings.

I can't imagine the pressure of celebrities - and women in particular - to look a certain way. It is mind blowing. I guess it's part of their job to be "professionally beautiful". Comes with the territory, and is what it is.

(That said, Helen Mirren, Maggie Smith and Julie Dench are HIGHLY sort after actresses between the ages of 70 and 82. No cosmetic surgery either. Plus they are British. I don't know what that means, but it's very interesting).

In my line of work as a fashion stylist working with clients, I become more and more credible and relatable the older I get. Aging naturally and fashionably is in my favour.

But as a fashion blogger, I am well passed my prime when companies look for bloggers to represent their brands in campaigns. They usually look for bloggers in their twenties, and I'm 45. I'd much rather work with my clients where I can make a very meaningful difference at any age, so things have worked out well.

It is an interesting read. My profession(s) has no expectations and no pressure around "looking young,"' and my social circle is very pressure-free in that regard as well. I suppose any choices I make around coloring my hair or any other practice that could be described as "age-denying" come purely from internal pressure or desires. And I'm ok with that. I don't feel pressured by society or my peers or my colleagues -- I just want to look as "me" as I feel at this point in time. I fully reserve the right to adjust those desires later.

Interesting read. Women in Hollywood have a lot of pressure on them to look a certain way. There seems to be more focus on their looks than on their acting. A strange life.
I have only put highlights in my hair about 12 years ago and I hated it. Of course the gray in my hair is not that noticeable and my hair still looks blonde. I might feel differently if that were not the case.
I am in a profession that does not value looks (academics and helping professions). There are women who care little about their looks in my world. But there are women who care enough to wear make up, colour their hair, get Botox, who knows what else.
I spend time on my looks (make up, skin care, good hair cuts, nice clothes) because it is important to me. My career does not depend on it. For that I am very thankful.

Speaking of old men and young girls in movies...my brother was razzing me about my objection to the pairing in the last Bond film. Altho his first hook up was the age appropriate and beautiful Monica Belucci, his last 'love' interest was literally the daughter of his peer he was supposed to be acting as guardian to. It doesn't help that theoretically she had to be close to if not over thirty, because she was so baby faced. That's sick in the head. Adults are here to help younger people with their problems, not position themselves as a potential source of them. My brother said James Bond's trademark is sleeze and what's my point? Lol. Still...

Interesting, Echo. I never thought getting older and letting it show would feel so rebellious!

Putting color in my hair definitely makes the grey look more grey. I wanted to make sure it didn't look like my grey was just grown out roots, and I didn't want to cover it all and start from scratch. It confuses people beyond belief that I have white at the top and then green and blue ends!

Fun read; thank you. I teach, and every one of the female teachers in the building colors her hair. Sometimes I stand up after lunch and see into the part of someone I had never thought about having grey hair, and there are the sparkles. I thought they weren't going grey because I didn't see grey, which is the same ruse they play on the students. I see teachers at barbeques at the end of summer and we all have grey in our hair, but come the first day of school it is GONE.

I did color my hair before we went to Florida in December, but I haven't colored it since, and I still struggle with whether I will. The funny thing is that when students ask about how old I am (I always tell them that I am just shy of 500, but don't look a day over 450) and then guess among themselves, they guess anything from 31 to 63. Basically young children have no concept whatsoever of age, and 27 sounds ridiculously old to them anyway, so what's the point in trying to look younger? I remember thinking in middle school that I would be 30 at the turn of the century, so I wouldn't be able to party because I wold be so old. So what are we trying to hide, really? The kids think we're all ancient, grey hair or not!

But I've always maintained that I will never rule anything out. Maybe someday Botox or fillers will be right for me (they aren't now). Maybe a mini facelift will be worth it (it isn't now). But for now, I have to figure that for anyone who matters (friends, colleagues, most adults), I'm either not all that old anyway, or I am so unfathomably old that it just doesn't matter (students, children and young people). And that will probably be true for most of my life.

Great article. I have found myself thinking similar things since having a daughter (who is now 23!), not that I am in that kind of career, but I just consider her when making choices about my body. So nice to read someone who is under so much pressure to look young and beautiful being mindful about what she is doing.

Thanks for posting this, Una. It makes me an even bigger fan of Ms. Peet than I was before I read the piece.

I couldn't get rid of two thoughts as I read her article. First, from what I've seen, even in the hands of a talented surgeon or stylist, intervention techniques never replicate the younger self as much as they just make a person look like a different version of herself. That why I'm leery when I hear women explaining their choice as something they do to "look better". Maybe what they see in the mirror looks better to their eyes, which, in turn, makes them FEEL better about growing older, so all is good. But, truthfully, I rarely see "better", mostly just different.

I also totally admire Ms. Peet's understanding that it's not a loss to voluntarily decide to remove oneself from the spotlight to let another person shine. I can look good with my greying hair and my softening face, but I don't need to look young. Let the young women have their turn in the spotlight, and I'll turn my time, money, and energy towards other pursuits. If someone who income depends on her appearance is smart enough to draw a line in how far she'll go to "improve" herself, I think I can cope just fine in my much less public sphere.

I don't mind doing the normal stuff like using certain beauty and skin care products, and coloring my hair. Beyond that, I don't want to have any cosmetic surgery, even though I don't particularly like my nose. My sister had a nose job years ago. She looks okay now, but she went through hell. They had to break her nose during surgery, and her face was all bruised and swollen for quite a long time. She looked horrible before she ever started to look better. My mother and I didn't think it was worth it.

I've been having some thoughts on this subject too, now that I'm noticing some unmistakeable signs of aging. One of the things no one has yet mentioned is if your SO would be disappointed in you if you got Botox or cosmetic surgery. Maybe this isn't an issue for anyone else, but it is for me. I think I'd rather keep his respect than get rid of my wrinkles.

Yes, I'd hate to live in Hollywood. It's a very strange and misogynistic value system there. People are just a commodity, viewed only according to how marketable they are. Makes you wonder why anyone would choose a career that would expose them to all that. It can really twist up your thinking. Kim Novak's face keeps passing through my mind. Tragic.

I think female actresses get tremendous pressure to look younger, and it directly effects their career opportunities. There's that Hollywood double standard which pairs women with men twice their age romantically in movies, and tells the women who are contemporaries of the male stars they aren't a good fit, it's pretty gross.

That said, I think both being a doctor and being an artist are careers with value, and how you navigate the sexism is a difficult individual choice.

I had no idea she was such a good writer, and I like her down-to-earth sense of humor. She's got a lot of pressure on her to look good, but is comfortable with where she's drawn the line. (She's in her 40s, though, and might feel differently after her face has gone through meno.) For myself, there are no boundaries. I'll cut and color my hair, make up my face, paint my nails, and use botox and cosmetic surgery whenever necessary to get the look I want. I guess I see myself as a work in progress, and I'm always trying to look better. I don't feel pressured to do this, it's just something in my nature that always wants to fix/renovate/upgrade just about everything in my life.

I agree about it depending on one's career choice. If your career depends on looks (thank God mine doesn't), then you have to do all this stuff to stay employed. And yes, women get the brunt of aging.

My takeaway is that your career choice is a big determining factor. It's not a minus to have some gravitas in my line of work, but some careers depend on looking (or even being) young - actors, athletes, models. The question is whether women get the brunt of ageism, and I'd say they do.

That was pretty funny. Amanda writes well. I loved the line about her daughters one day going to college, taking a couple of feminist theory classes, stopping shaving, and refusing to eat Thanksgiving dinner with a foot soldier of the beauty industrial complex. A watershed moment along with wrinkles for every woman to experience. Lol. Like that moment in 7th grade when your kids decide to go fruitarian...that, btw, is waiting for the food to fall off the tree properly before you will eat it.
