Living near Malaga, and having spent time in Madrid, I agree with these observations almost 100 percent.

In my village, however, women dress like crap unless there is a big event like the annual feria. (By crap I mean ancient sweatshirts and leggings.) Women over 65 no — they will wear dresses or skirts even to go out with their walker. And they do dye their hair.

Thanx for the report Irina. You described all the scenery so well I could see everything in my head! I also love the light neutral satin skirt, chunky sweaters, sneakers and ball cap look and even wear it sometimes (because am a skirt girl myself!!) but with some tan suede cowboy boots-a biker jacket and no cap (only if big sun or rainy). And, I love bare legs even in fall (down to 12°C). Feel like the sweater/topper keeps me warm down to my shoes but I certainly don't stroll outdoors that much anyway, mostly just heading to another indoor location.

Now, about the boots, bare legs and short skirts look on the youngsters I am the only one who gets it? See, while showing off their beautiful legs they also want to be comfy, practical so they can run and dance and not looking too pristine and I get that. It is so very weird to see somebody wearing heels/dainty shoes and being too precious about them, this is not a point for the younsters of the 21th century I guess and love that!

Then, whoever wears a shorter hem with heels or more delicate shoes can feel they are revealing too much of skin. You can feel uneasy even wearing a strappy flat sandal to a shorter skirt so I find boots a good solution to that even if doesn't match our general aesthetics or feels seasonaly confused, who cares anyway-they surely don't!:-)
Youngs have to distinct themselves from other age groups and if this look can be pulled off by some they are the only ones, aren't they?

Fascinating descriptions. We were in Spain decades ago--must have been around 1988 or so. Madrid was very somber--it was about 12 years since the end of Franco. We loved the art museums and visited as many as we could.

But Seville! What a wonderful city! We were there during the week of the Feria de Abril in Spain. The dashing young men on their horses with the young women riding behind them, their gorgeous dresses spread out. And at the end, the most fantastic fireworks display we've ever seen. There were booths open to the public--like us--where we shared bottles of Fino with locals and other tourists.

Thanks for bringing back great memories and describing modern Spain. Now I want to go back!

Thanks for the great report!

I was actually surprised at all the people wearing shorts when we were in London in August. But then again, it was quite hot and also probably many of those people that I saw were also tourists.

I also love the skirt/sweater look but it does seem seasonally confused to me and I hate having cold legs.

I think kids have always done the look-alike thing haven't they? Maybe not always but I know my daughter did but not now that she is in her 30's. Oh yes and those Uggs! I got a pair of her hand-me-downs and they were very warm but slippery! I picked my niece up from high school one time - late August in Alabama - and all the girls coming out of the building were in heavy sweatshirts and Uggs (with shorts). Made me hot just looking at them. Kids!

Thank you for the great report! Regarding trends, I think younger people actually enjoy dressing alike more than older people (broad generalization of course). I am not surprised about the lack of athleisure or shorts - seems like a common theme in most European fashion reports. It does seem that Europeans do dress not only for themselves but to contribute to the general aesthetics of public life, as you suggested. Something to think about!

Irina - the seasonal incongruity is what I meant . I think wearing a thin satin skirt in the fall would be odd. At least in our temps. But I agree -a brown skirt and top would look great !! I don't mind juxtaposition in an outfit but when it means one half of your body is hot and the other cold, it doesn't work for me.

And Suz - YES - to a trend having to cross a higher bar to work. That is a perfect way to put it and I have to inscribe those words onto my brain. I think this is why I went for the Sambas - they are a nostalgia item, and also work very well with my look for work and for personal time. I don't feel like I was caving to a trend the way I would if I were to buy a pair of UGGS.

Interesting. I haven’t noticed a lot of Sambas in my area. I bought them because I was nostalgic for a time, long ago. It’s funny when you’re influenced and don’t even know it. When we redid a bathroom we did it all in grey. I thought it was because I’d started wearing so much grey. The contractor said HGTV.

As an aside I realized why the boots, bare legs and short skirts look feels a bit off (to me personally) - aside from being seasonally confused from a Canadian perspective, it feels costumey, a la Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (although they wear hotpants, which is another variation I've seen on the look). Anyway, I'm fully aware that the kids don't care what I think, lol, I just find it interesting to break down why something feels odd to me. It helps me adjust my reactions when my girls just want to hear "you look great, have fun!'.

Interesting, Irina. My impressions of Madrid fashion were similar to yours when I was there. I did not visit a beach town so I cannot compare, well, unless you count Barcelona, which I guess does count, but in a different way, and I was there in late October. :;)

I love to see people dressing themselves well.

Re the trends -- I understand what you are saying. You feel about the trends you see on young people in Toronto the way I felt many years ago when the Ugg craze hit Kingston. These slipper boots were warm, yes, but utterly, completely impractical for the freeze/thaw weather conditions kids were wearing them in, and within days looked beat up and grotty. Disgusting, really! Not to mention dangerous because they did not have slip proof soles (the first versions, at least). And yet everyone had to have a pair!!

When I think of trends now and whether I adopt them, I just think about whether they suit me and I like them and whether they work for my lifestyle and body and climate and will inject a bit of fun or pizzazz into my wardrobe. And I guess I do have a little "no" reaction if everybody is wearing them. They have to cross a higher bar then, for me to adopt, i.e. have to be especially well suited to me, personally, and something I would be happy to wear for a while after the trend faded.

LJP, I like the skirt plus a sweater outfit and I would wear it casually out for lunch with DH or a dinner with friends. A key here is to make satin feel less dressy. The skirts I saw were in pale yellow, milk chocolate, light grey. Could also be styled with a sweatshirt instead of a sweater. How cool it would be to pair a brown sweatshirt with a brown satin skirt? But this is imaginary life for me I get cold easily and if I wear a chunky sweater, more likely I would also need something warm like jeans or light wool pants. I usually don’t do well with seasonally confused outfits. But I admire them on others.

This is really interesting and I know EXACTLY what you mean about feeling like you are in high school following trends here in North America. And the Sambas example was perfect: the only reason I "let myself" buy a pair is because I wore them back in grade 8 when they were just another thing we wore. I felt like I at least earned the right to wear them again - does that make sense? The other day I spotted a high school girl on the bus wearing the same chunky loafers with gold hardware as I was wearing . SAME PAIR. Eek. Is nothing sacred anymore ? lol.

The satin skirt/chunky sweater look is great, I agree. I like it, but can't figure out where I'd wear such a look. What are your thoughts on that?

Thanks, Irina! Fun read.

The time I went to Spain, I found the people very well dressed and fashionable! Fun to watch.

These observations - that you mentioned too! - hold true for most of Europe's dress code in my opinion: few people wear shorts, no athleisure, people are dressier than North Americans, and people dress up to go out at night.

OTOH, when you are in a big Euro city seeing the sights - you tend to see it ALL because of tourists ;)

Interesting observations! With a night club aged daughter I can confirm boots, bare legs and short skirts are a hot summer night going-out look here at home as well (I don’t get it either).
I do indeed know what you mean about all pervasive trends here and specifically those darn sambas! I actually still love the look and have contemplated them many times but by the time I ‘discovered’ them, my kids were like umm yeah EVERYBODY at school has those. I’ve ended up with two other pairs of adidas instead, so not sure I’m saving myself any money or mental energy by avoiding the big trend. But, a little more longevity and subtlety hopefully.

First of all, I apologize I don’t have any pictures. I wasn’t comfortable o take photos on the streets.
We went to two place in Spain - Malaga and Madrid. Obviously, fashions are different in a beach, southern city and a capital of the country. When deciding on my own wardrobe for the trip, I kept it in mind. I didn’t want to wear my “resort” pieces in Madrid because I felt like Madrid would require more sophisticated clothing. But I had to wear my white linen pants once due to very hot mid day temperatures.

My own ides about bot places were correct. So, I’m going to report on each separately.

Malaga. It is a popular vacation place and it was busy. Because we were there off high season, there were less younger people and I had a chance to observe middle age and older women. Happy about that. I saw only a few trends.

Most popular pants - wide leg, cropped or full length.

No shorts, instead women wore dresses and skirts, below a knee or midi. Or loose fitting pants. Some sneakers but mostly comfortable sandals. Blouses and shirts but very few t-shirts. Overall it, women looked dressed up. From what I could see, their clothing was not expensive at all, it just had more personality and intend. My DH, who is not into fashion at all, noticed that people looked overall dressed up, especially for dining out and it gave the place more festive feeling.

Another one of my observations - not much grey hair. Older women in Europe are tend to cover grey hair. Also, more makeup and not always minimal. No backpacks - who can tell me why in North America women carry backpacks everywhere? I often see it in a gallery or a daytime concert.

Madrid. This is where I saw the latest trends, casual but also office attire. Very busy urban environment. Sneakers were the most common footwear but also some flats and loafers. I saw oversized blazers, suede bags, romantic blouses with frills or big collars. The trend I really liked was a satin a-line (not bias cut) midi skirts worn with chunky sweaters, sneakers and a ball cap. Ball caps are popular. Slouchy, low slung jeans but also barrel leg or tapped jeans - cropped, full length, raw edges or not. Styled with cropped tops, oversized shirts, big sweaters or t-shirts. Lots of black, white or cream, some brown. Some feminine shoes but still lots of Docs.

My DH decided not to wear his shorts in Madrid without my suggestions, on his own(!) It was ok in Malaga but not a vibe in Madrid. My DH like any other North American male, wears shorts while weather permits only with exception of special occasions. In Madrid we saw it only on a few teenagers.

I saw more 50+ women wearing some trends than I see I my own city. It was interesting fo someone, like me, who appreciate fashion. Variety of trends worn by all ages made the street style feel more like individual expressions of taste.

That made me think about trends I see where I live. I also live in a big, urban centre but my relationship with trends had always had a bit of uneasiness. I think I figured out why. Trends in Toronto feel like I’m back in high school. Some trends picked and then worn by every young female. Sambas? Everyone had a pair and I bought, too! Later sold them because I felt like I’m joining the “popular girls “, IYKWIM.

About a month ago, we were coming home in the evening and I saw 5 young women walking together through downtown. 4 of them wore mini skirts and cowboy boots! On another night, I saw about 6 girls in lines to different clubs wearing cowboy or riding boots. In was about +30C that night.

Aside from shorts, another thing I didn’t see was athletic gear worn as clothing. Sure, I saw people biking or running in gear but not casually strolling the streets in yoga leggings and cropped tops, like in Toronto. Who ever said that leggings or bike shorts is a universally good look on female bodies? Not to mention, it is made out of plastic.

So, these are my observations and general musings on fashion worn :)
Often, I come back from Europe inspired to be more intentional with my styling. Maybe dressing for others more. Because I appreciate when people around me dressed nicely. You?
