The miu mius are nowhere near as cute as the brown ones. I think there is a fine line with an item like these. Depending on your outfit, you COULD come off as trying to look young. So that is just something to be aware of when wearing them, and you could easily temper it. I'm 30, and I am a huge sneakerhead. I only wish I could wear them to work.

So to the point, I don't think your S.O. is wrong, but you need to show him how it's done.

Coming out of lurkdom to post (a bit late to the party, too...). My husband is 14 years older than me (me being 34) but actually, he is the one rocking orange tennis shoes and telling me 'no, you are not too old to wear a short skirt'. But me, being a mom and in my 30's, am a bit in a rut of what to wear not to appear like a kid (often people assume I am still in my 20's) and not treat me seriously lol.. I also have more gray hairs than my husband! So I would say it is a mentality thing...

Like any DH would do hahah he reaise an eyebrow when i grab something fashion foward i found days ago when shoppin a geometric pencil pants and was going to try on a minty cat print peter pan collar he was that's not age apropiate the cat print was for someone older (i was in freaking forever 21!!!) AND def ask me are u really nuts to try on the geometric print which i never tried on. I told him i want to see if is something that i will wear someday and feel confident wearing. At the end i didn't like it and he love it. My guy is pretty cluless in fashion and sometimes tell me im a combination number of a security box lol nothing matches!!! He is those person that thinks if u wear a pink blouse you need to match it with the same color the earings and the shoes !!! and i believe that is way too matchy matchy....ok enough
so i think i like better the first one! than the miumiu ones really and i think u can rock it ...if you are confident about it ! Don't listen silly hubs

Does he see all trends as for young people or just this particular pair of sneakers? DH also raises an eyebrow at some of my fashion ideas, but he relates to it since he follows cooking trends. Yes, who knew they even existed! And he is definitely up on technology, but that is his job.

What an interesting topic. I have a few observations. First, your SO comes off as the more conservative between the two of you. I don't know, him just met him briefly so I am merely talking quick superficial impression. He looks younger than 53, by at least 5 years, I would never think he's your Dad.

My second thought is that fashion sneakers just have a young vibe. Period. Hence Angie's blog post about how to grow up the look. This is also why I have hesitated to go for the look. It's frustrating right now. Sneakers are either super frumpy (and I am sure the frumpier they are, the more "age appropriate" they will look), or they look young. Teens or 20s.

Mo, my SO basically thinks trends are for no one. He can hurt my feelings with his comments sometimes, because he feels this strongly, but what can we do but plow on ahead when fashion is something we love? Men often *cannot* understand trends because men's trends are more subtle and slow to turn over. My opinion, at least. Men don't expect other men to keep up with that stuff... but heaven forbid someone is still playing Xbox instead of Xbox 360...

Women get dressed for each other and not for men is my theory. If you want to get them you should! Some men are quite stylish but the majority of them have a very off opinion.

Mo - I think that some of it could have to do with the *name* of these sneakers! I mean, "Twynkle????" No wonder he thought of them as being for someone younger! Could you possibly go ahead and get them - and call them something else? - so that he doesn't realize that they are the ones that you had originally showed him???

Eh, advance apologies, but I think it's a case of level of refinement here. I *am* a little surprised those are *women's* shoes and not junior's when it comes to Nordstrom. Don't get me wrong, I think you can wear them and be age appropriate because of who you are, but when it comes to just the shoe and looking for a market, I think the bigger market would be teens.

I've always wondered age difference doesn't also play a role. You are a young-looking 40 something, Mo, and maybe, at 53, he doesn't want to be mistaken for your dad instead of your SO when you are out in public. My husband and I are separated by 10 years and, although he is in great shape and looks much younger, he once told me, when I was dressing to go out, that I looked more like his daughter than his wife. He was laughing when he said it, but I wondered later if there wasn't something else behind the comment.

i think there is always going to be a differential between what a guy thinks is current vs what a girl thinks is current, regardless of the relative age difference. it could also be a mo thing, where you start from a really fun and youthful place that may be less conservative than expected from even a fashion-forward early40s gal. so the guy/age thing may be emphasized based on your starting point, not necessarily your bf's.

ps, i love the all over studs, but the pointiness is not as sophisticated, not the all overness. i saw a pair of studded toe shoes with the pointy studs...nope. if the twynkles had rounded or flat studs...i would be soooo all over them.

I agree that it is likely more about conservatism than age. Perhaps you can find a compromise - a less expensive pair with the studs as an accent rather than an all-over look.

I think you could easily rock the look with a casual pulled together outfit but you might not want to unless the SO comes around a bit.

Karie, perfect solution! :)
I know sometimes I have to warm him up to what's current, but he's usually somewhat open. I mean, he went and got himself some chukka boots last year and 2 pair of CofH jeans the year before that. We got all the pleats out of his work trousers 5 years ago, etc. He would rather die than wear khakis with polo. So I do value his opinion, realizing that he might be just a bit more conservative than I. But I wonder where the age thing becomes an issue. He is 10 years older than I.

I think most guys at that age are not too into fashion. Even my DH is not all that aware of what is modern or acceptable for me at 29, and he's 33. Some guys do notice more, but I find *most* don't. I think you can do the studded sneakers, Mo, as a nice casual shoe. Actually I thought about this too as I was trying on some wedge studded shoes at Aldo in the mall today. I thought, hmmm are these for 16 yr olds? Well yes, I can see teens wearing hem, but you know what, that doesn't mean I can't wear them too! I didn't buy them, but not because I didn't like em, I just didn't have money for them right now, and not sure I necessarily need the, or have a place in my wardrobe for them yet.

When I sent a link to the Twynkle studded sneakers over for the BF he said they looked like something a 19 year old would wear.http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/st.....er/3379186 Went on to say it looks like Needle head from Hell Raiser but on a shoe lol. He's almost 53. Aware of staying current, fashion-wise, but not trendy.
I went on to hunt down an alternate pair that were more 'grown up'. http://www.barneys.com/Miu-Miu.....lt,pd.html Sure, the Miu Miu's are more tasteful, but they also cost $495 instead of $66!
So, is this a case of level of refinement in a trend or is it just less likely for men to see trends as something for their Significant Other the older we both get?

And I guess this means I will be waiting for the perfect studded toe sneaker to come available
