I was going to post later, but I’m absurdly proud of the day look I put together by swapping in my Ecco sneakers and Loft jacket. Later I will change shoes, add a smaller bag, and bring a light raincoat and umbrella to the party (along with running shoes I don’t mind getting wet). It’s all happening when the thunderstorms are supposed to hit. I’ll leave the olive jacket and metallic sneakers at work.

Thanks, unfrumped!

Sal, I hadn’t thought about the contrast issue with tucking or not tucking, so that’s very helpful to me - thank you!

I also just realized I can break out my iridescent purse for this event. Yay!!!

I am late to this thread but I hope you have a terrific time. The skirt is lovely on you.

I feel I have a similar shape to you (I think I am taller/bigger though) but I am also short waisted and struggle with tucking as I can feel too busty, poofy, or that it emphasises any tummy and my legs look too long. But seeing these I realise that tucking looks terrific on you. You look gorgeous and shapely and very elegant. I especially like the black and white top in the first pic - the low contrast but pattern really works well. Untucked also works but I do prefer tucked. There are a few of us on the forum who are short waisted - Diana, Janet being two I remember talking about it. We all have different shapes and styles but share this characteristic.

I have been tucking again mostly with low contrast looks and I find it really can work.

Update: I've ordered a cropped tee and some Sarto silver slides. If the slides work, I'll probably wear those to the event, with the peplum top. The cropped tee is something I wanted anyway, and I hope it actually looks at least somewhat cropped on me.

The Earthies are going back, but I may consider reordering the black in a half size down. I may not need them, though, if the silver slides are comfy enough.

CHRISTINA- google Carolina Herrera- she is known for a fancy skirt and a plain simple white shirt of many styles. Heck try it with a fitted white tee and glam it up with jewelry- yes, no, maybe?
Life is all about choices;-)

Good thought, Sarah. I thought about the color of sole too, once I had the shoes in hand. I might also the silver slides I have in mind, as they have a matching sole.

I like the skirt with all three tops. You got this!

The sneaker outfit looks fun and the skirt looks great with the black sandals. I realize neither are suitable for the museum event. The gold sandals look too casual for the museum event look to my eye. I think in part because of the tan sole/wedge. The same style in black might work?

I tried another option before I left for the day. Striped shell and sneakers (the latter are not so much for the museum event, just general information purposes). Pouffing the top out makes a difference.

efbgen, you’re wise. It’s a comfort zone issue for sure. I’m still building my dressier evening capsule, which means that of course I don’t have a ton of options for this skirt. Most of my dressy tops are meant to go with pants or perhaps day wear skirts. The good news is that since I have these two types of top that work already, i’m not starting from scratch.

CHRISTINA- sometimes when we do an initial “ stretch” into territory we are not use to, we have growing pains or concerns and want to pull back to a comfort zone. Give it a chance- it is a great piece. You have styled it well on your first try. You have shoe options. Double yay.
When things are more relaxed and mirror issues aren’t stressful you can have more fun playing with it. For right now- “ breathe “ and smile because we think you made a great choice.
Oh and beautiful dress you are renting too

smittie, no worries, you confirmed something I already thought anyway, which is valuable. I wish I could just wear the black sandals and be done with it, because they really do work. The museum floors just hurt my back and feet, and I have a back strain issue now on top of it. It’s a challenge, and I’m just going to have to try things until something looks right By all means, continue to nitpick!

The dressing room top has no open neck whatsoever, which I know you can’t see from the photos but I think helps. Going to keep that in mind.

Cardiff girl, I’m on the hunt for a cropped striped top, but it can be hard for something to actually look cropped on me since I’m so short wasted. I always have trouble finding crop tops. I think BR has one. The skirt is actually shown on the website dressed down with a striped tee and sneakers.

The skirt is lovely and now you own it you are chic and cool like it.I do think that it looks better with the black heel than a flat sandal and if you are not comfy with the idea of tucked in tops can I suggest a structured, cropped top that ends just below the waistband so we can see your shape but not your bare tummy.I m sure that you will find it a very versatile buy once you ve got tops that you are happy with.

Sorry, Christina. I gave you advise you didn’t ask for! Really, it is just nit picking.

For the tops, I think you’re definitely on the right track. I like the one shown in the dressing room as I like the coverage in the shoulder (seems dressier to me). Does it work tucked in with a bit of poof? (ETA: I reread your post, and you say it does! Great!) I also like the peplum of the one shown in your lobby.

smittie, I do kind of want silver sandals. I was thinking about that but the post was already rambling too much. I might keep these Earthies anyway, once I size down.

I was thinking instead maybe a silver slide sandal with a slight wedge. I found one from Sam Edelman, I think, but can’t add the find right now.

Now, I am not sure whether the sandals you picked are the right choice because they are a warm light tone whereas your outfit is cool and dark.

Love love love the dark sandals. They are gorgeous on you.

I know what you mean about tucking in certain tops. I have a large chest and am short waisted so sometimes tucking in makes me look like a pigeon. I manage this with a peplum top which helps define my waist or shells that hit right above my hip bone. AT usually makes very pretty shells in this style. I think the skirt looks lovely on you and the peplum top adds a little Wow factor.

Bijou, I wish I could wear the skirt and the black sandals to the event at the museum, but I don’t think I can hack it with those heels on the marble floors. I can barely hack it with normal shoes on those floors. However, I’m sure the skirt and heels will get some other opportunity to come out and play together. I was hoping to do something modern looking with the flatter ankle strap shoes. But of course I need ones that fit properly.

I got the black ones for this dress that I’m renting.

Oh, Angie, thank you! I’m just cranky because I tried in a bunch of tops I didn’t like with it. Feel free to ignore my self-deprecating remarks - the skirt is awesome. It looks great and is comfortable! I knew as soon as I tried it on. I also know that I always have to struggle a bit before I can figure out which tops go with the skirt. That’s how it goes.

I think I also feel a little out of my element dressing for these more elegant events (that aren’t formal, since I go to at least one formal a year and I’m good on that score.)

The Earthies might need to be a half size down. The strap kept them secure as I walked around the house, but I don’t like that they look too large. Fortunately, since I ordered from Zappos, it’s easy enough to return them and get an exchange. It’s a great shoe overall.

The black shoes are great too. I’m glad I did a shoe audit before going to the wedding, as I realize that my “comfortable” dressy heels were actually a half size too small and much too tight around my toes. I’m sure my feet have been changing, which is why they worked before.

The skirt is too chic and cool or you - Christina, what are you smoking??? From what I can see, it looks like a fab fit, and is a very versatile skirt. Can be dressed up or down. I love it on you.

Both tops look great.

Naturalizers are a perfect fit and a lovely classic. Gorgeous with the skirt. FRESH to my eye.

As some of you may have read, the Navy Boden skirt I ordered didn’t work, so I got this black BR one instead. I hope to wear it to a somewhat dressy event on May 15 at a museum. These Earth sandals that Angie recommended were ones I already had my eye, and I like them a lot! That should work well for me in the museum, which has marble floors

I intended to do an outfit lab, but honestly my un-hung mirror situation is so challenging that I just pick the best one and went down to the lobby to take an extra picture. I tried a bunch of other different types of shells, tucked in untucked, but none of them seem to work. I always have trouble tucking things into skirts and pants because I have a very short waist. And then the extra fabric usually clings to my belly. I’m better now about ordering petites, but sometimes things don’t come in petite and some of my tops I want to be long anyway.

Anyhow, the top I happen to have on in dressing room (black white for and light blue) plus this black and white peplum one seem to work the best to my eye. The top from the dressing room was the only one that tucked pretty well, probably because it billowed out a bit.

Anyway, I’m starting to be afraid that the skirt is much to chic and cool for me. ( I think cute is more my wheel house than chic.) I guess that could just be the fact that I haven’t been buying tops with this kind of outfit in mind?

But I’ve fallen in love with the skirt and would like to make it work somehow. I won’t subject you to the terrible pictures in my terrible mirror, which makes it all look worse. I just want a sense from these pictures if you all think I’m on the right track with these shapes of top, since you all have been so helpful with me figuring out my winter dressy the items. I can try on more things tomorrow after I’ve gotten my husband either take some pictures for me or help me hang the mirror (he’s out now or else I’d have already enlisted him.)

On a side note, I also got these black Naturalizer heels for a black tie optional wedding, also in May. I don’t want to wear them for my other event on the 15th, because I don’t think I can wear real heels in the museum. The black ones are fun and glittery and very comfortable, for heels. I mention them in case anyone else with fussy feet is looking for heels. They also come in other colors.

Pics are all out of order! Sorry!

ETA: I got these silver slides to wear. But the weather is supposed to be thunderstorms tomorrow, and I can't possibly wear those shoes, or anything else dressy enough, to or from the museum. (It's unlikely I'll be able to take cabs both ways in that weather. Can't rely on finding them.) Sigh. Looks like I'll be checking a bag with sneakers at the coat check. I've posted finds for the final outfit I plan to wear, along with my trench coat, since I guess I'll need it. It will at least be warm.
