These "rules" were just for the week of recruitment, formerly known as rush. The sororities want to look their best that week and present a polished image as they recruit new members. Recruitment week is sort of like a combination of job interviews and speed dating. If you have ever worked with college age interns you know that many of them need some coaching, and it's probably best not to leave anything open to interpretation. I think there was some attempt at humor in the list, I'm sure it's not like that all the time.

Blimey! I'd heard of sorority's and fraternities but never knew what they were other than college groups (thanks for explaining chewy).
I suppose if you don't agree with the rules then you just don't join. It's seems a bit restrictive with not much scope for individualism though i guess that's the point! x

After going to all girls high school for 4 years, I was more likely to join a fraternity (if they would have let me!) than a sorority on college. But I had some friends who were in sororities or fraternities and I could see the appeal - a built in "family", social scene, alumni network etc. But there were way too many rules and restrictions for my taste and I'm just not the "groupthink" type. Certainly there were plenty of girls who fit the sorority stereotype - shallow, catty and condescending. But most people who go greek in college know what they are getting into and I have rarely met anyone who was not satisfied with the experience.

Getting back to the list, I find it mildly amusing but not really offensive and perhaps really helpful for someone who wouldn't know what was appropriate for rush events. Considering how many women come on this board to ask what to wear to this or that, imagine getting a 6 page detailed list from the organizer of an event! And really, some of her "rules" are ones that we have heard right here on ylf!

Sororities are the female counterpart to fraternities. These are college service groups, but they require the members to make a serious commitment to the organization- and once you're in, you're in for life. Former members become mentors, financial supporters and community contacts. They often live together in a house off campus, and besides requiring group participation to their charitable events they do usually enforce some kind of dress codes as they want to present themselves as a homogeneous group. I remember one friend who was pledging a sorority having to wear all white and no make up to a certain event (I want to say it was initiation at dawn and they wanted the girls to look pure and fresh faced). It's not uncommon for them to have a dress code for events, but this gets a little specific, IMHO.

I don't really even know what a sorority means, or what it means to be part of one. It's a completely foreign concept to me. I love that movie though: "legally blonde".

I loved this girl's list and I like all the click through photos of the girls in the comments section. To me, aged and foreign, all these girls look as if they're having fun! I don't really know what a sorority is because we don't have them in England. It all reminds me of American campus novels from the 60s in a good way.

I presume sororities must be some snobby thing (and I don't like that!) but it seemed to me that the writer was giving pretty good advice. Heaven know when I was 18 I needed advice and I might have got more confidence being in a group of girls who tried to help each other out.

No such thing as a soroity in New Zealand.

It was amusing, and I can kind of see where she was going with it - saves a lot of questions, but it was all about her personality and what her personal taste is.

Also - in the earring section - what is a huggie?

Disclaimer: I was a in a sorority for 4 years and was responsible for the administrative portion of recruitment one year.

I enjoyed the time in the sorority because I got to meet and spend time with women whom I otherwise wouldn't have met (not many females in the physics department) and due to the community service that we did. However, they were definitely more relaxed than this recruitment chair. I wouldn't have spent 4 years in a chapter like this.

This list is definitely overkill, and this recruitment chair doesn't have much faith in the rest of the chapter's ability to dress nicely without looking like hookers or trailer park trash.

I was never in a sorority but rented a room in a house that turned into a sorority house (the girls never told me their intentions before I signed the lease; they just needed someone to cover rent I guess). They shot me nasty looks all the time and had awful rules for themselves. I didn't talk to any of them but they regularly talked behind each other's backs and I once caught them talking crap about me. Needless to say I was out of there asap. This is just further confirmation to me that many of them are awful, awful groups and I can't understand why anyone would want to join something so superficial.

I was never in a sorority but my oldest daughter was. The rules for rush were ridiculous. Like this soroity there were rules for everyday. Everything they wore had some pink in it somewhere. When she joined I had no idea. In my opinion girls are weeded out of some of the groups by the way they look. Not in all of them but some.

I never saw anything that ban a certain brand but her's did specify jewelry and color of shoes.

My daughter loved soroity life. Looking back I think it restricted her to a certain extend and it is expensive.
