Chewy, thanks for chiming in! Sounds to me like we (ie govt) make it much more complicated.

YKk, other services are necessary, but I’m sure you’ve seen the results of housing first projects; when people have a home, clearing up problems like alcoholism, schizophrenia, and basic hygiene issues is much easier. Imagine that!

I’ll just be over here with Anna, ice-bathing in my cross-stitched burkini, keeping one eye out for wild boars, the other on my briefcase.

@chewyspaghetti
Concentrating on housing alone to me is a large part of the problem. It goes right back to the label "homeless" which to me is one of convenience. If we had proper facilities where these people could be actually looked after by professionals this problem would lessen greatly. It seems as if a lot of people just want to pretend the problem doesn't exist. Meanwhile these people dig in dumpsters and try to medicate themselves with alcohol and street drugs.

As someone who worked in homeless services, specifically trying to get people into housing- I would say that not having funding is not the issue. At my last two jobs, my clients all had active housing vouchers through the Housing Authority. Getting them into an apartment, and keeping them there is an incredibly difficult job due to the many barriers they have, the burocracy in the system, the shortage of affordable housing, and the discrimination of landlords. That is not to say that we don't need more funding for this type of housing because we absolutely do. But without mental health care and supportive services, those vouchers are useless to them. It's such a complicated issue.

@Stagiair Fash
I doubt people in the US are that judgmental about peoples mental problems. It seems like we don't much care about the mentally ill at all from what I see. We're happy to stamp them with the label of "homeless" and let them wander around raving to themselves, baking in the heat, freezing in the cold, living in unsanitary crime ridden encampments. When we do anything it's to put them in some kind of shelter or public housing if we even do that. Of course they can never really make proper use of something like that because they are too sick with schizophrenia or some other horror to be able to function. We give away government money for every thing imaginable while these people just wander around or turn up dead. Then we shake our heads and lament that more needs to be done to solve "homelessness" as if the person died because they had no home.

I think the US is much more prone to being jidgemental and saying things about a persons mental state based on what they wear. I’m an American, have lived in Berlin for 7 years, divided between the 90s & now.

@Stagiaire Fash
Wow that is kind of out there, I's say the guy probably has some mental issues. Personally I just like holographic spandex and spandex in general. That body stocking would be a lot of fun but it is a costume not something you'd wear in public. If you wore something like that here in the US you'd be laughed off the streets or worse. Even a woman couldn't get away with it. A man might as well forget it. In some arias you can do a little more. In the better parts of LA and surrounding I can get away with some things, in the worse parts it wouldn't matter what I wore I might be robbed, shot or stabbed. There is just no fun to be had in those places there unless you're a thug out to hurt someone else.

Sarah, you’re cracking me up! I believe it’s Elsa who sings Let It Go, so…. But anyway, I was pulling up gifs of “excited” to send a friend, saw one of Anna, downloaded it because it looks like me, saw it later and thought it was you. Maybe this will work https://giphy.com/amp/explore/excited-anna

YKK, the first person I thought of when I saw your picture is a guy who was wearing an equally fitted full-length bodysuit, made of a thicker version of what pantyhose are made of, but with “holes” all over, where it was the denier of thin stockings. He was riding an electric scooter down my street, so in that posture they force one into, that looks like you’re presenting yourself to the world. But to your question, Berlin has laws against photographing other people without their consent, and I’ve seen people step up and correct someone they thought was clandestinely taking pictures. And anyway, it would be really weird to make a fuss over what someone was wearing.

Echo. I agree with you about knowing what to wear where, and being respectful. There are gowns that are quite revealing yet opera appropriate, and gym clothes would be looked at oddly in the waiting room at the doctors here.

Again, it is a matter of degree. I see women and men wearing all sorts of things that make me uncomfortable, especially in the summertime. In larger cities, it is worse. I genuinely don't want to see people walking around like that. I have seen more questionable things than I choose to recall in public, but I sincerely doubt any of those people were arrested. Ultimately, it is none of my business what others wear on the T, and I can avert my eyes.

I agree more with respecting social boundaries in the sense of respecting venues and events. In other words, I would take issue with someone wearing a bikini or speedo to the opera. I have no issues with venues having dress codes and tossing people out on their ears for not following them. But society doesn't break down because of festival wear on the T.

@Echo
Yes we do have bodies, we also have instincts as we are social animals. While I would love to wear something like that picture there is such a thing as respecting other's boundaries. I am not a woman for one thing and a lot of women don't want to see some dude walking around like that. There is still some kind of civic decorum that should be followed so everyone is comfortable. While I love fashion and I am a creative type to the bone and have came up with outrageous ideas of every type, I feel like I can still be me without going off the rails and acting out.

Unsurprisingly, I'm 100% here for the idea of embroidered swimsuits.

And agree, it's as sexist to drag a woman out of hijab as it is to force her into one. (I realize of course that some women's choices to wear hijab or other elements of Islamic dress are constrained and influenced in complex ways by patriarchal society -- but so are Western women's choices about how to dress! As indeed is the case in my swimsuit shopping example above.)

I don't know Frozen very well but your hair is darker than mine so I suppose that makes you Anna to my Elsa? I just got a haircut so my long braid possibilities are a bit more limited at the moment. Why do you ask, are you...are you going to tell me to let something go? lol

People's definitions of "social order" are very, very different. For some people, it means that everything must remain the way it was in the 1950s (or earlier). For others, it is more malleable.

There's nothing even close to undoing of social order in allowing people to wear what they wish - people have bodies and we all have basically the same parts. It's time people got over it. There are billboards with women wearing less than the bodysuit posted, so it certainly doesn't violate any laws. As for not allowing modest dress at the other extreme, it is absurd and criminal, IMO.

@Stagiaire Fash

I'm not for telling people what to wear but society has to keep existing as we need it to survive. If you let people like me walk around in what ever we dream up it would basically be disorderly conduct. See pic related, this thing actually caught my eye as something I probably would wear if I could get away with it but it basically makes me into a sociological weapon of some kind against humanity.

I didn't know that French police did anything to Islamic girls at beaches or why they would but it's not surprising. Of even greater concern is what we are doing in Islamic countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan. In their own nations we did a lot more to these people than mess with their clothing.

Oh, I cross-posted with YKK. Well, I was being cheeky in my initial post, but I'll say that I am not sure that I agree that the obligate display of the body -- particularly the female body -- is necessarily progressive.

To be a little less theoretical about it, I don't think that *everyone* is necessarily covering up nowadays out of prudery. I think there are just more choices for swimwear and some people are choosing more covered options for a variety of reasons, not necessarily a return to conservative mores.

It's true, I used to look at pics of people in those heavy wool 1920s bathing costumes and think: ugh, how repressive. I never questioned the prevailing norms for female swimwear and yes, probably considered them to represent progress.

This year, I looked around and noticed various forms of gender-neutral swimwear available and thought: hey, I might want something like that. Why should I have to put my whole body on display and constantly pick lycra out of my butt crack just because my pronouns are she/her? I bought a pair of running short-style swim bottoms and a couple of sleeveless rash guard-type tops for our recent vacation and was very happy wearing them.

I think it's great that nude beaches exist (not so great that they are in wild boar habitat, maybe!). I think it's great that women of all ages and body shapes wear bikinis. (Maybe I'll do so in the future!) I think it's great that people can choose more covered styles if they want.

Ahahahahahahaha
I just bought a hoop & some threads to start playing around with embroidery, hadn’t thought of it as a News medium/way to capture historical images for the ages!

Great pics!

It's interesting how we went from being covered while we swam more than a100 years ago ....... to becoming more and more uncovered as the decades went by ....... to going back to being covered up again in 2022. Full circle

Coincidentally, this piece that starts out with commentary on swimsuits posted on Instagram on the same day Angie put up her blog piece on swimsuits. If I could wear the Grünewald “attire” everywhere, I would! Alas, even in Berlin that doesn’t fly (although the beach there still has the same dress code—you might recall a funny news story about a guy whose laptop was stolen there by a wild boar). https://www.tip-berlin.de/stad.....risch/amp/
