I get a lot out of reviews as long as I don't take them literally. Little glimpses into how a mind works. Are you getting the jumpsuit Anna?

I love the reviews, I find them really helpful and sometimes what the reviewer hated is just what I'm looking for! I'm 5 ft 2, so when a reviewer says "short and boxy" I know that's the top for me. "Too tight in the calves" means I probably won't have to get the pants tapered and so on. I really like it when the reviewer mentions their height, weight and the size they tried. Of course,as Angie mentioned, body type plays a huge part as well. I'm especially grateful to this community for explaining the 'low volume foot" YOU RULE ANGIE! Understanding that I have a low volume foot has changed my shoe world completely! The reviews of items that Fabbers talk about here are all very informative. Thanks so much!

I always love to click thru and read the reviewers other reviews. My sisters and I entertained our selfs for half an hour one time reading this one women's yelp reviews......all we knew was if she didn't like it, we wanted to try it.

If anyone ever watches America's Test Kitchen on PBS, there was a hilarious moment regarding recipe reviewers that change absolutely everything about a recipe and then give it a bad review. They did one of their 'letters to the editor' segments and Chris Kimball read a letter which mentioned a previous test kitchen recipe which the writer had changed a lot of things in - I think they swapped chicken for shrimp, and didn't use dairy in the sauce, or something like that - and asked why the recipe didn't turn out. If I recall correctly, Kimball just replied with something brief like "yeah, that is a surprise" and moved on. Very New England.

I thought of another thing that bugs me about clothing reviews - don't assume that the color you bought will be obvious from your review. Most online retailers aggregate all the reviews of an item with all colors, including ones that may have sold out and aren't on the page anymore. So "most gorgeous color ever" or "a bit too orange" aren't really helpful if you don't *tell us what color you bought*.

Rabbit, I love the spoof Amazon reviews, because they're usually well-written, and very droll. And you're right, the review tells you about the reviewer and what they value, if it's any good at all. There have been a lot of times when I've bought a book, for instance, because of a bad Amazon review, because it's clear the reviewer has completely opposite preferences to mine or is just someone with an ax to grind. Same with some bad Yelp reviews of restaurants: "this place is way too quiet and mellow, I prefer loud music and lots of hot chicks in short skirts." I'm heading there for dinner right away!

Lol

I love the whole thing of writing spoof Amazon reviews, especially for unintentionally amusing products.

But yeah, for any review the number one thing people get from it is a sense of the reviewer, and then you have to use your judgement as to what they say about the product.

I never understand reviews for clothes books or shoes you haven't seen in person or worn. Same goes for recipes you haven't even cooked.

Oh my bad. I pinned the jumpsuit before I read the review. NOT. Lol.

Ok. Well, I lived in Arizona, so I feel I can say this: One should really simply leave town for the desert, which is beautiful. If you hole up in town... I mean, it is simply not mentally healthy to stay in town and grow golfing greens in a place WITH NO WATER... it leads to things like foam flip flops being the height of fashion.

I'm jus' saying is all...

What a bizarre review. "I have no plans to buy this item and have never bought anything from this store, but I needed to let the Internet know I think it's ugly." Oookay.

My 'favorite' are Amazon reviews of an item that only comment on the speed of shipping. "A++ seller, quick shipping." Dudes, this is Amazon, not eBay. Comment on the actual item you've purchased and how you like it.

Actually, I've got a lot of pet peeves with reviews, now that I think about it. Don't make a review the same day you get something; wear or use it a few times before you comment. Don't say "fit horribly" without getting some indication about your figure type and size. Don't comment about price without context - "in my opinion, the quality is low for the price" is useful, "too expensive!!!" is not, because everyone's budget is different.

Why write a review of something you have no intention of buying--or are even willing to try on in a shop? It's like people expressing an opinion about a book or film after opening with "I haven't bothered to read/see it, BUT..."

I agree with Angie, reviews are only as helpful as the author is thoughtful about the audience that might be reading them.

HAH. It made me laugh too, Anna. Not very helpful. Merely a subjective opinion on design.

HAH. Diana, that's hilarious.

I think you have to be critical and analytical of reviews because body types and footwear needs are different. For example, if someone gave a top a bad review because it made their already broad shoulders look even broader - I know that won't apply to narrow shouldered me. Same goes for tops that don't fit over a large bust, or shoes that are uncomfortable because they're too narrow across the instep and unsupportive of high arches. Those are not my requirements so I safely ignore them. I DO appreciate the reviews on colour and quality though. And whether an item is itchy, soft, long or short.

This reminds me of reviews of recipes where the person is all "I eliminated all the spices and substituted tofu for beef and boiled it instead of fried it. It was so bland! No taste! 1 star!"
