That is so beautiful. Thanks for sharing and inspiring so many to share similar experiences.

In 1998. I have spent 18 months in Budapest on a contract job. On weekends I used to wander the streets with the map in my hand, but would end up just walking wherever and explore the city that way. One cold Sunday morning, it was around 11 or 12 o'clock (full hour) I was on The Castle Hill and just started walking down the random street. Then I heard the sound and it was getting louder as I kept walking. When I arrived at the source it was actually a small space with the remains of some old church, probably destroyed in war, but its tower with numerous church bells was intact. And it was those bells that were actually making the melody - it was a familiar classical piece, although I no longer remember exactly which one. But I remember the feeling of pure exhilaration for having been immersed in that sound.

I had been returning to the same spot a number of times later, around similar time of the day on Sundays, but never heard the bells ringing the melodies again. But, I have a memory from that morning and it is one of my favourites from that period.

Such a gift when serendipity puts you in the right place at the right time. Glad you shared the magic. We habitually wander into unknown churches when we travel and have enjoyed choirs, organ music and soloi musicians. Sounds like a wonderful trip.

I have attended a choral service at St Paul's before -- it is an excellent space to hear music! I have an odd fondness for complicated choral music and Gregorian chant type stuff, despite normally listening to much more rock-type music. One of the things I enjoy most about life in the UK is the abundance of cathedrals and ancient churches where they still have these fantastic choirs and regular sung services.

Carla, your experience brought back the time my sister and I were visiting Oxford and walked by on the street next to the Merton College Chapel. We heard music coming from the Chapel and noticed a sign that Choral Evensong was at 6:15 pm, just half a hour away.

We checked with the porter to see if we could attend, and, after confirming that the service was open to the public, he asked if we wanted to walk around in the quads until the service started. These areas are not normally open to the public. It was wonderful to walk around inside the College, but that paled in comparison to our attending the service in the 13th century Chapel. The chapel has been a place of prayer and worship for over seven centuries and, sitting in those hand carved stalls, listening to the choir was both humbling and awe inspiring. That service remains one of my fondest memories of Oxford.

As Beth Ann says, churches should be heard, not just seen. It's easy to forget that when we get caught up in the magnificence of the architectural details.

Aw that's great.
Due to train schedules I had less than 24 hours in Venice. Best memory stumbling across a small church having a baroque music concert. We couldn't get in but my friend and I sat on the steps under the full moon with other random people listening to the music.

Oh, that sounds wonderful.

Reminds me of a beautiful memory of my own. My husband and I were on one of our very first dates. We decided to take a train up to NYC for the day. While we were there we decided to visit the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. It's a beautiful place, and we wandered around inside, taking it all in. As we walked, we were both hearing the most beautiful violin music, and we kept getting closer and closer to it, until we finally found the source. It was so simple -- just a solo performer, but the music was beautiful and heartfelt, and the acoustics were amazing. We both just stood there in awe, and it took us a moment to realize each of us was just as moved as the other. It is difficult to put into words, but it was an incredible shared moment that said something to each of us about our being together in that place at that time. Sixteen years later, we still remember that fondly.

DH and I are on vacation, and currently in London. One of my goals was to visit St. Paul's church. After a long walk down Oxford St. From our hotel near Marble Arch, we arrived at our destination, with about 1 hour before closing.

We were provided with an audio tour, but shortly after plugging in, I heard something else, and took off the headphones. A choir was practicing for Evensong later that night. It was going to be filmed by BBC for the series, 'The Choir'. I told DH I was just going to meander around the church without the earphones, and listen to the choir.

It was beautiful.
