Sorry about the post-and-run -- I ended up having an unexpectedly busy day yesterday.

So yes, I'm seeing the same pattern Victoria is seeing -- the extroverts seem to prefer quieter colours, and the introverts say they like the loud ones. Hmmmmm. Iiiiinteresting. Is there a balancing act going on here?

I never thought about the cultural aspect of colour, but yes, there must be something to that. You certainly see different colours wandering the streets of Mumbai versus Hamburg, Germany!

I read your article about orange, Rae -- interesting! (for the record, orange makes me think of crisp fall evenings and Halloween night, which is why I like it -- but only as a pop of colour, reminiscent of a lone jack-o--lantern flickering on a porch in the dark. Too much of it and the outfit starts to look like what is worn by the guys out on air traffic runways).

Thanks for your thoughts, ladies. I wish I could find some proper research on this topic -- I would love to read an article about it..

I think i see a pattern here-lot of members who said that they were introverts are loving bright colors and extroverts went for subdued neutral pallette. I find it quite interesting because I am defiantely an introvert and I LOVE brilliant colors. However, when it comes to home decor, I have always went for warm toned neutrals and I HATE brights so go figure

I'm most definitely an extrovert that prefers toned down colors. Bright colors make me fidget, and I kid that I'd never want to decorate with any color that would keep me awake at night, lol. That said, I don't like it when colors are too muted, either.

I've never thought it makes sense. My favorite color is red and I love bright colors. However, I'm definitely on the introverted side of the spectrum.

I dunno. My closet is all whites and slurries, with a few pops of color. But that's what I think looks best on me, and which wears best, and plays nicest with others, not necessarily the colors I think of when I think, who am I?

I am extremely introverted and shy, especially in large group situations (like parties) or among people I don't know very well. My closet, however, is full of bright, saturated colors and patterns. Even my neutrals are "strong" neutrals, like black and white. So I'd say my clothing is loud and my personality is quiet, which helps balance each other out. But of course quiet does not equal boring, so it's also a way to express myself without actually having to talk or be social, LOL!

From a practical standpoint, my clothes help me to not blend into the background too much, which is important!

I agree with Angie that it's hard to generalize - I do believe there is a connection, but it depends on so many factors. My relationship with X color won't be the same as yours.

A while back I wrote a guest post on Bella's website about the color orange. So many magazine quizzes have said that orange denotes a very extroverted personality. But to me, the color reminds me of poisonus frogs, traffic cones, etc - "bitter and dangerous: do not eat."

When I was younger, I was so introverted/shy it was painful. I hated going anyplace where there would be lots of strangers or routines I didn't know.

Now, there are still introverted aspects to my personality. I still prefer a quiet night at home to a lively party. Social situations stress me out. However, I'm not shy either. I'll gladly tell you or a whole group of people what I think about something. I like making people laugh. I don't mind sticking out in the way I dress or think.

Through all of that, I loved magenta, green, purple, red, blue, pink, yellow...strong jewel tones. I like blacks and greys, but only as foils for other colors.

I'm a pretty introverted person (I thrive in a quiet work environment, get overwhelmed by too much noise and activity over too long a period of time, etc.), but I love bright colors and bold patterns! However, I'm not much for head to toe bright color and bold pattern, and I've never been into neon brights. I like my color grounded with greys and blacks, and until recently, I've been uncomfortable wearing outfits that don't contain at least one bit of dark, neutral grounding color.

Maybe all of that is pretty consistent with my personality. I probably don't *seem* as shy as I feel, although I do know that I come off as fairly reserved to many people. But as you all know, my wardrobe is not somber. I'm adventurous within certain limits that are usually driven by sensibility and practicality, and I have a pretty progressive/liberal slant, which fits with my avoidance of looks that are "conservative."

Interesting to ponder.

Hmm. Well, I think color choices definitely say something about who you are - temperament and more.

I like navy and gray. I also like shocking color. I think that's the preppy that's been beaten into me. I'm a borderline introvert/extrovert, kind girl/mean girl. So I like a little bit of lavender, but head-to-toe lavender? What am I? The crybaby on the playground? I'd have to take a swing at my own self.

Elisabeth, thank you for starting this thread. I am very interested in this too.

I commented along a similar vein on Amy's thread about the colorful Trina Turk top. I have always thought the reason that I prefer quieter patterns and fewer colors is that I am a bit "high strung" and prefer the more calming combinations. I also lean far more towards cool colors in both fashion and decorating. I always thought it was because I was a bit more excitable that I gravitate to more calm colors, color combinations, and patterns to tame down these tendencies.

When I read your comments about public emotion and control, I could have written it myself so perhaps you are onto something and it isn't about personality and an individuals tendency to react but rather to behaviour.

i am really looking forward to reading the comments here.

I think this is a fun intrpsoective exercise (gets those lateral brain cells working and it's great to intellectualize about these types of questions!) - but do take the whole thing with a pinch of salt. There are too many exceptions to these simplistic generalizations - especially when culture plays a significant role in wearing colour too.

So I'll start the ball rolling. I am very aggessive because I LOVE tomato red.

I don't think that there is really a general rule about color preference and personality. For example, someone who is aggressive might like bright red, but someone else who is also aggressive might actually be drawn to the soft, cool color tones of blues and greens because of their calming effect.

I also think that color preferences or color associations may be a learned prejudice: brown is masculine and drab, and bright colors are cheerful, for one example. Or hearing that "you look good in lavender" or the opposite of "lavender washes you out." Or "warm colors are cozy" and "cool colors are cold and uninviting" say in interior design.

I do find some colors "loud" but so much for me depends on the volume or amount of that color represented as a whole and what other color(s) it is worn or shown with.

As I was hanging up my new gray blazer yesterday and peering into a closet that's heavy on the gray, black and navy, I started thinking about colour preferences. I've always thought that all that stuff on the relationship between colour preference and personality was bunk -- you know, things like "people who like red are aggressive" or "people who like purple are artsy and sensitive". It's too specific. But you would think that there might be some correlation between general temperament and colour choices, where calm, reserved people would gravitate toward sombre colours, and talkative, extroverted people would gravitate toward brights. But judging by my own colour choices, that's clearly not the case. I'm not a sombre person at all. I'm cheerful and outgoing, and I talk a lot in an animated way. And yet the contents of my closet look like a rainy day in London. Sure, there's a few hot pink or kelly green outliers here and there, and I have a thing for red shoes, but overall there's a very restrained use of colour in my preferred palette. When I paint, it's the same thing. And the art and interior decor I prefer tends to use colour sparingly. It's not that I don't like bright colours -- I love them, but prefer to deploy them in a restrained way.

And I had this thought. While I'm definitely the extroverted type, I am very turned off by public displays of emotion, unless it's situation-appropriate, like say crying at a funeral. I'm embarrassed by drama. Even in private, I place a high value on composure and collected behaviour. In my family, while of course we sometimes argue, nobody shouts, ever. Perhaps too much colour is the visual equivalent of shouting? Does colour preference have more to do with behavioural preferences than personality? Or is it totally unrelated to either, and I'm just wandering off on a pointless mental exercise that makes no sense?
