I'm late coming back to this thread, but just wanted to say that linen definitely needs to be tried on, as it can indeed be itchy sometimes.
Also: I have a feeling a fun yellow top would make you smile

Joy - I don't mind the style, it's the fit that's somehow off on the Lucky tops.
Ryce - I think they accentuate my long waisted shape in a way I don't like. And maybe a bit boxy too.
Lisa - I may look for looser non jeans for spring and summer. I think that's why dresses and skirts can work so well.

Ha! I could have written word for word what you said about Lucky Brand tops. I love them in the store, wear once, and then something just feels or looks "not quite right" and they never see the light of day again.
And all this time I thought it was just me!

I hear you with wanting looser clothes for the heat. Last year I added 2 pairs of cropped boyfriend jeans (one by Joe's and one by Lucky Brand) and they worked well as a looser fit style of jean.

Delurked, Lucky tops can be quite boho and maybe that is not your style. I bought one in a pattern and colors that I loved but didn't wear it much for that reason.

BD - it's interesting about Lucky. I have worn their jeans for years, and I have had several of their tops too. I like the patterns, styles etc., but for some reason, on me, I only like their tops but don't love them. I try them over and over and find them ok, but don't reach for them if I bring them into my closet. It must be a fit issue for me, but I'm not sure I can articulate where it is going wrong.

Besides the brand itself, I need to consider how to know which are the pieces I love vs. the ones I like ok. Sometimes I can't tell until I get them home and don't pick them from the closet immediately. I wish I was better at making the determination before purchasing.

Bennett - I haven't put much time into finding a jean replacement. Jogger pants aren't usually very flattering on me. Khakis sometimes seem too wrinkly. Some ponte can be too heavy or too legging like. At some point I may devote some try on time to finding non work pants, as I would like a pair or two as an alternative.

Believe it or not, I found some 100% cotton tops at Walmart. I love them sleeveless for base layers under my tissue thin tops in summer, and long sleeves under sweaters in winter when it's cold but not stupid cold.

Inge - you are very impressive. A good listener and a nice selection. I have several pieces of clothing from the Loft, but will need to try their linen on in person. For some reason, I have been finding knit linen tops very itchy.

I did get heart eyes for the yellow Boden top, and am going to look closely at several of these to see what looks the best to try. I don't have any yellow at all in my closet, but depending on the shade, it's a color I can wear.

Finding 100% cotton tops seems to be getting harder each year it seems!
From the stores I checked tonight, Loft had a surprisingly large selection of 100% cotton and 100% linen (also nice in hot weather) tops that look quite interesting. Bonus: they are currently having a sale, just saying ;-)

Here's what I found so far (many are a cotton mix, many are also available in other colours).

Thanks Ryce. J Jill has a store near me, but I haven't seen much in there that excites me. Many years ago I actually liked them enough to have their credit card. I'm not sure what happened to my affinity to it, but I will take a look next time I'm at the mall. One thing that they might also have are dresses that aren't too short. Those are often tough for me to find.

Joy - the amount of things I hang dry is crazy. I may take a look at the men's for a crew neck tee, which I usually prefer for an exercise class.

LP - I do have fairly athletic calves, so I agree a straighter cut can read as a skinnier jean on us. I may look at Uniqulo, but I'm on the cusp of the top sizing at everlane. I won't bother trying them, since it irritates me they haven't added a bit more sizing. That said, I get it is their choice on the sizes they carry. I just don't want to bother liking something that I can't get the next size in.

Brooklyn - not all the tops need to be cotton, but I was just surprised at how little of it was in the store. I got a few tees last summer that didn't get that much wear before they looked terrible. It was frustrating.

I do need a couple of shorter tops for when I wear skirts. I find skirts super comfy in summer, and they match well with a slightly shorter top.

SF - the top is from Anthropologie. It was my first ever purchase from there. I've since found a long sleeve tee, with an asymmetric hem I like. For a long time I would try on Anthro clothing and it wouldn't fit just right, but I do like the patterns and some of the details they carry.

I also like straight leg or slim straight jeans. If it's a skinny jean, it has to be stretchy enough not to feel constrictive. I've got a couple pair of jeans that probably need to exit soon. I will do a full try on of them one of these days.

I'm not actually in need of jeans - I was just curious to try them on. If anything, I would like some looser (as in, not too fitted through the thigh) summer shorts or pants that aren't denim. Maybe linen even. And skirts or dresses that wash up well and hide cat hair just a bit - ha, a girl can hope!

Calf-sucking jeans are my nemesis. Precisely why I opted out of skinnies. A lot of slim-straight styles read as skinnies if you have substantial calves. I agree that designer denim seems largely to be cut for a different set of proportions that mine. And I agree that it's worth checking out Levis -- they have lots of options. I tried the new 505c cut recently and liked the fit quite a lot:

http://www.levi.com/US/en_US/women/p/283420004

I passed because they didn't have the color I wanted in my size, and because they'd definitely require hemming, but if they bring them back in solid black or a less-distressed grey, I may pounce.

I agree about the cheapening of jerseys/knits lately too. I'm abstaining from purchasing t-shirts for the foreseeable future and wearing lightweight cotton and linen wovens instead. If I had a real need for cotton tees, I'd go with Uniqlo's Supima tees, or Everlane.

You might look at men's tees in small sizes for more length. Try Target. Unfortunately most knits shrink in length in the dryer, so fluffing on no heat and hanging to dry is the way to go

That top in your picture is lovely!
J Jill's pima cotton tees are a heavenly soft and substantial cotton knit, and I doubt they are trendy enough to embrace shorter lengths. Unfortunately, they often leave a lot of be desired (at least on me) in shape and color choice. But they do lots of versions each season and sometimes I find a winner that is worth purchasing in the basic colors.

Shorter tops are definitely more popular in retail right now. I have been rejoicing their return but that does not help you. A few years ago I bought some simple cotton Ts from J Crew. I have been happy enough with them.
I usually buy straight legged jeans. I never jumped on the skinny train. I always bought premium denim but last year I tried on some Levis and I was very pleased. They have worked out very well. Mine are high rise but there are lots of styles in the Levis store. I think Paige makes straight legged jeans. I was planning to buy some.
The top you are wearing in the pic is very pretty. What brand is that? I am sure Free People will still be making long tops.

Yes, the tops are on the shorter side. I have been focussing on shorter tops to go with higher rises.
Good luck with your search. Pure cotton tops, especially knits, are such a unicorn. I usually end up settling for cotton viscose blends.

Joy - it's been a while since I've worn LE tops. In past, I was always between sizes. They may fit me better now, and I will take a look.

I was just looking online at Nordstrom tops, and I think the shorter tops must be trending this summer. That's going to be tough for me. :(
A lot of tops looked way too short for me to wear. Plus, when it gets well over 100 plus I run warm, I don't like to have to wear a cami under tops, so I try to keep things not too sheer.

I don't have a Nordstrom in town, but sometimes find an unexpected gem at N. Rack. You just have to keep an open mind in there and not go in with a specific agenda.

You might try Lands End on line for knit tees. They are supposed to be of better quality than most. For summer you might like their rash guard tees to wear as regular items. I have a plain white and a stripe that feel good on and are better for me than a cotton knit. Mine have long sleeves but I think that there is a short sleeve version.
Don't give up on The Rack. It can be hit or miss. Next time you may find some tops that you like.

Brooklyn - I don't have one locally. I would prefer sleeves, but I might give a try to sleeveless this summer. It would solve my problem with tops not being broad enough through the shoulder. But I'm also long through the torso, and I would worry the top above is too short.

I am glad you found a real workhorse. If I find the right thing, I'd definitely go for duplicates. Here's a pic I wore today. It was my favorite top purchase last year, though I don't think it photographs that well.

Do you have a uniqlo where you are? I have had a lot of success this summer with their UV cut tops, which are cotton knits. I have three in the same high neck, sleeveless style (black, navy and white). They are in heavy rotation and stand up to washing really well (the white one does get dirty fast). They also have other styles in that range. Of course, I don't know if what's available here reflects what's available in the US.
And I so agree with you about jeans that are tight on the calves.

I was killing time today while being the family taxi driver. It didn't make sense to go home, so after a Target run, I stopped at Nordstrom Rack. I wasn't really looking for anything in particular, although I'm really in need of spring and summer tops. I came away empty handed - I need the winter clearance to go away and see the early spring stuff.

1) A lot of premium denim brands don't seem to fit my body type very well. I tried on a bunch of denim in brands I don't have (Paige, Mothers, AG). They were universally meh on me. It's not an issue of size. It's an issue of proportion.

2) I'm tired of skinny jeans that are tight on my calves. And I like my calves. I just want looser bottoms when it's hot, which is most of the time for me.

3) A lot of knit tops seem sooo thin and cheap. They look like they will pill in moments. Where are the cotton tops these days?

I'm crossing my fingers I'll find some short sleeve spring/summer tops knit and wovens in the next couple months. Since I wear them all year long (it's in the 70s right now), I would buy 10-15 tops if I could find them. I've recently demoted several of my favorite tees to exercise (walking) tops. I want the tops to be special in some way - flattering cut, subtle details, fun print etc.
