Great thread! I too have been more mindful of my purchases recently. May I also suggest checking out @the garment life on Instagram and her website. All about truly ethical and sustainable pieces and doing great work in that front. They are doing a lot of upgrades to the site this year to make it easier to find resources. They offer ‘pop-Up’ shops a few times a year where they pair with makers for a small discount, another fave is Sassind in Australia. Fast shipping and beautifully made items.

This is a great list, Jenn! Defining sustainability may be a tricky thing, but any company that makes SOME KIND of conscious effort to handle fashion in a way that is better for the planet and the beings in it is a winner in my book. So many just don't bother. Anyway, thank you for taking the time to make this list!

Thanks, Jenn. I know most of these brands. GREAT.

The question of sustainability in fashion and style is an EXTREMELY complex one. No easy answers or solutions. Far from it. When you've worked in manufacturing and retail like I have, your mind will blow as to how extremely complicated the supply chain and sourcing chain really is. How do we really know that an item is sustainable, and what makes an item sustainable? What's the minimum requirement for an item to be classified as sustainable? So, so hard.

You have to figure out what sustainability means to you, and do the best you can. Sounds like you're doing that Jenn - good for you!

Jenn et al, thanks for sharing these ideas and resources! My hope is that the groundswell of interest in these sorts of companies will light a fire under the larger manufacturers and retailers, and pull sustainability and human rights into the fashion mainstream. Our dollars have clout!

Shevia brings up an interesting question about what makes an item “sustainable”. Is something made with less waste and pollution near where you live and then shipped to Israel more or less “sustainable” than something produced conventionally and used in the Eastern Mediterranean region? Part of the answer, I’m sure, depends on what you prioritize in defining “sustainability”.

Thanks, Jenn! I have a few to add (and this list makes me realize how important bags, shoes, and simple knits are to my everyday look!)

Able - for small leather goods, shoes, jeans, tees https://www.livefashionable.com/

I agree Jenn (for example should I order from a NZ designed brand made in a good factory in China or a US Sustainable brand). I suspect you might face similar but different decisions.

I do think in 2019 there has been a movement towards accepting our own part in the environmental problems we are facing and steps we can take to help. And it is better to have $1 million making some progress than 10 making lots of progress.

Suz and Shevia, there’s such a wide spectrum of what constitutes sustainability. I do believe it’s more easily achieved by small companies than large, though, just because the supply chains of large companies are so complex. For me, it’s not about perfection. I just try to do the best I can, with the information available.

Oh, Jenn -- this is terrific -- thank you so much. I hope LaPed and a few others who are interested in this subject will also chime in.

I am going to explore the links (those I don't already know). I own some Eileen Fisher (but not a lot), a Patagonia backpack, a Quartz parka, and various other pieces. But I'd like to add to my "go-to" places.

One Canadian designer I really like is Comrags. As they explain in the interview in this link, they can't source their fabrics in Canada any more. So that is a weak link in the chain. And the clothes are not cheap. But I have never thrown away a piece of Comrags clothing. I have donated items that no longer fit -- but that is a different issue. http://www.sophomoremag.com/de.....er-2757969

That is an interesting point Jenn. I have recently been in contact with some sustainability groups in Israel, and there are many small local designers, but sustainability is still a smallish niche here as far as I can tell. I probably will have much more information in a few weeks though!

Thank you for posting this. Your wardrobe is so interesting, so it’s good to know that your purchases are also from sustainable companies. We were on our trip to Great Basin National Park when we heard a show on NPR on All Birds. It was fascinating.

I have a pair of EF sandals. They are comfy but my feet are average width.

Thanks for adding yours, Sal. To both you and Runcarla, I have no idea which brands on my list ship outside of the US, which I know must be as frustrating for you as it is for me to click through and not find my size! All these things are hit or miss with smaller companies, but I'm sure this sustainability movement is going on in every country and all across the size ranges.

Thanks Jenn! The only one here I have tried is Allbirds (one pair of Tree Runners for me and two pairs of Wool runners for Jon). We both rate them highly.

Oh and I have a pair of the EF Sandals - they have been great actually. But a very narrow fit in my opinion - my feet could not be any wider and my feet are pretty standard width.

I will add two more local brands to me

Kowtow - I have only tried their Building Blocks range but am tempted by several others.

https://nz.kowtowclothing.com/

Kristin Magrit - she is Perth based. My black jumpsuit is her label (but purchased from a local boutique)

https://www.kristinmagrit.com/

Brands on my radar:

Ace and Jig - Super-special pieces from the most gorgeous textiles. Quite expensive...I am waiting for the one that sings to me.

Hackwith Design House - Natural fiber clothing...and swimwear!

Jamie and the Jones - Really beautiful woven clothing in very limited editions.

Only Child Clothing - Natural fiber clothing. Similar look to Elizabeth Suzann, but made in California.

Patagonia - Fully expect my next puffer to be Patagonia.

The Root Collective - Shoes. I really like the look of their booties and ballet flats.

Tradlands - Best known for their button-downs, but venturing into knitwear, dresses, and jumpsuits. No pants!

Veja - Sneakers. The pair I ordered didn't quite work for my feet, but I might try a different style. They were so close, and looked great!

I know there are TONS more brands out there, so feel free to add any of your favorites. Again, my selections are limited by available size ranges. I hate following an Instagram ad or article link and being disappointed when the largest size is a 10.

Thank you, Jenn. Though I’m more of a B&M shopper, I’ve become interested in sustainability, and also North American made garments. I’m becoming more and more interested in Universal Standard.
