Hi Janet.

It's funny that you mentioned burgundy. I just ordered a bucket bag from Madewell, even though I actually haven't seen it in person. I also looked at Nordstrom online, and there was nothing. I had been eye-ing the Brooklyn bag by Coach but now not so sure.

I'd love to get together. Maybe we can get a group going like we did so long ago. Something to consider in the near future.

Suz, thank you! The JC are the exact vibe I’m after — but sadly probably too high these days. It’s too bad because I love everything else about them! I may order them to try — the reviews say they are comfortable but I know everyone has their own idea of comfort!

Janet, can you wear Jeffrey Campbell? These? Heel might be too high.

I also saw these Bos boots in various colours and thought of both of us. I have zero idea about fit and quality....

Janet, that jacket looks amazing! The fringe and the plaid together really amp it up, and the fit and styling is terrific.

Miz Mooz has quite a few burgundy boot styles this year, mixed in with red. I'm not sure any of these are up your alley but just in case!

i just fell off my chair at "Strenuously Whimsical". That wins the Internet comment of the day.

And Janet, yes, your rings and bits of print are authentically you. And I know what you mean about the minimalist look being hard to get right . When you can't afford The Row or Toteme ,Khaite etc, it's tough to find nice pieces at good prices. Sometimes I think this is where I'll start look on TRR or even eBay. Anyways, I think it can be done without being tall or thin or even gorgeous. It's all about the vibe (that sounds so flaky) and yours is more artistic and unique.

Thanks, all!

Naz, I know what you mean about the bags! Styles seem a bit stale to me, or what’s trending seems impractical (too small, fussy to use). Maybe we should get together for a shopping day in DC soon to look for some burgundy together!

Angie, good observation! I already committed to the plaid jacket — I wore it on our first cold night over a black turtleneck and black trousers with patent booties for an event (a friend of ours was inducted to our state athletic hall of fame and we were his guests for the awards gala). The shoulders are indeed just a slight bit wide (only on one side actually), but in this pic I’m wearing the jacket over a thin short sleeved tee — a size down felt too tight across the back when I lifted my arms so I knew that with a sweater underneath I needed the size up. I actually bought some removable shoulder pads that can be worn under a variety of tops to fill that shoulder a bit more.

Thanks, Lisa! I hear you on the shift towards more simplicity. At the same time, if I tilt too far into a minimal aesthetic, I don’t feel like myself. As much as I enjoy the cool monochromatic vibe of stylists like Alison Bornstein, a statement ring, interesting footwear, and a little color go a long way to help me feel authentic. If I were young and thin and gorgeous, maybe the minimalist thing would work better on me, LOL.

JAileen, yes! Charcoal and shades of gray are really appealing to me now.

Star, high five to the “one bag to rule them all” club. :-D

Lisa, those are nice boots! I’m thinking of something a bit more fitted on the ankle, a higher shaft (sock bootie, even?), and maybe a more pointed toe, or a snip or even square toe. Something with a bit of edge. I have burgundy footwear but in the form of stompy boots and tall boots. It’s not a need but I thought I’d look while the color is supposedly trending! Also not having much luck with forest or deep teal green, although the sequin top is a great exception.

Cookie, LOL — I know the vibe you are talking about! Not my thing either, and sometimes I have to think carefully about styling printed items and jewelry to avoid that look. Nothing wrong with it in general; it’s just not me.

Jaime, Irina and Lisa — funny you mention the jeans. I have been wearing my newer wide-leg silhouettes a LOT. But I’m not abandoning narrower legs — in the pics I’m wearing pre-owned COH Emerson jeans (loved them so much in blue that I sought out another pair in black). My boyfriend jeans are still being worn (and on my legs they read more as straight legs), and yesterday I even wore an old pair of straight leg jeans tucked into tall boots — how’s that for a throwback? LOL I’m enjoying the variety.

Suz, I’m sad your fab plaid boots are failing! Those are so great and unique. Good luck with a repair or replacement. You wear your wide leg pants sooo well! But it sounds like you, like me, enjoy the variety — cigarette pants are also fab on you.

Dee, I really like the look of those tonal approaches too. It’s so pleasing to the eye. I think I lean in this way instinctively, and as I get older I find myself drawn to less contrast and starkness in my style, perhaps because my coloring is changing to have less contrast as well.

Love the burgundy sweater and the grey plaid fringe jacket is incredible.
Yes I too am looking for this burgundy that was touted so much. Not much of it here really.
I've been trying to sort out where to go with my wardrobe vis a vis pant silhouettes. I find myself more often than not wearing my straight leg jeans. I've also been on the hunt for some burgundy cord jeans that would replace my skinny burgundy ones. No luck so far.
I definitely wear less patterns in the fall and winter, so I plan to experiment with some tonal dressing more. I can possibly do it in grey, blue and burgundy/ plum colours.

Very interesting thoughts, Janet!

On the subject of burgundy booties -- I, too, have been looking and not finding as yet. I'm definitely in the market for a red or burgundy boot or bootie. My beloved plaid Paul Greens need some serious attention from a cobbler and may not be fixable even then, so I know the writing is on the wall.

I like your new sweater -- the texture's great! And green sequins for the holiday seem like a brilliant, no fail option with your colouring!

Speaking of which, I love the jacket! I couldn't see the fit issues Angie mentioned but of course it would be wise to check. Otherwise, full steam ahead! It's gorgeous with your hair!!! Love both the grey/ white and the fringe. Perfect marriage. And I definitely see the appearl of a jacekt that is a bit different, very obviously not for work in an office.

Like others, I enjoyed the narrow pants. While I'm obviously a huge fan of huge pants and I don't plan of switching away from them entirely, I am also a huge fan of slim or cigarette pants. I can't see myself going full on calf-sucking skinny again for a while, (if ever), but I am more than interested in the right pair of cigarette pants! And I still happily wear my slim BF jeans.

Re style shifts/ adaptations...Following on Sarah DB's post, I'm thinking of challenging myself to more tonal dressing. Just trying to see in what ways I could do it, and whether it would or could feel like "me." To be decided...

I'm still fond of pattern...but like you, I often tire of patterns in a season or two, and so I tend to wear pattern in winter via scarves. I do still like to have one or two patterned knits in rotation in the winter (for those times when I just don't want to wear a scarf, lol...) and currently I do have two. I also have several patterned shirts/ blouses. Most of my patterns are stripes or tartans -- these, I never tire of. I tire more easily of florals, but since I do also enjoy those, I give myself permission to own a few. My patterned knits in Finds. One a frank floral, one a geometric with elements that hint of a floral in an abstract way.

I've been updating/ refreshing some knitwear, but most of what I have purchased so far falls into the "essentials" category for me.

I guess I'm still generally happy with my style....but I would like to work on refining it further.

Love your new jacket and the whole outfit with grey jeans. Like LJP, I appreciate the narrow silhouette of your jeans. I don’t know why so many gave up on them. Slim jeans don’t look good on me but I still like them on others when styled right.
My style shift relates to the recent lifestyle change. I need so much less. How to reconcile this fact with my rather larger wardrobe of things I like and how to accommodate the desire for new - that I don’t know. I want to be more precise and edit with a really critical eye. Yet, I’m afraid to over edit and regret. So, indecision pause for now.

Interesting thoughts! I have been very interested in fringe lately and can certainly see why you picked that jacket!
I still like patterns but am more selective than ever about them and am also happy to wear narrower jeans and pants and bootcuts. Wearing bright colors makes me feel less faded so I have been leaning into that. Every time I make peace with one sign of aging it seems another pops up so I am always adjusting something.

Well, I still love prints and patterns. I am never going to be one of those people with an impeccable elegant minimalist style. But lately I am drawn a bit less to my retro looks and more in the arty/funky/interesting shape direction … I just don’t want it to turn into that Strenuously Whimsical Menopausal Chunky Jewelry Look. lol. Not that there is anything wrong with that in principle.

Great new jacket. I like the grey, it goes well with your hair and grey is softer than black near the face. It's a nice change up from black on you (you also wear black well!)

I picked up these red booties this season (see finds and you can see them on me in this post photos 4-6), not sure if it's what you had in mind, but they are a darker red color and the heel is on the lower side and the toe box is roomy.

Fun sequin top! I hear you with casual get togethers, a printed graphic tee under a cardigan, jacket, blazer, or hoodie and jeans is all I need for gatherings coming up this holiday season. Or a nice sweater with pants or jeans, like I just did for Thanksgiving.

For style shifts, my big decision is to shift my core away from black to navy. But that will take years. I've also noticed that I'm more interested in unusual color combinations (ie color combinations with no neutrals, no black, navy, tan, white, etc just two colors paired together instead). It seems to fit the casual, sporty, colorful vibe I'm interested in at this leg of my style journey.

Fun new jacket and lovely new tops ( dark green is fabulous for holidays )!
I'm still loving printed tops but find very few to my liking - the colors/fabrics/fit rarely align . The shoes/boots are even harder - just duplicated the pair of ECCO's that worked so well last year and the new ones ( black/charcoal ) feels a bit tight to my surprise ( trying to stretch it ).

The green top is totally gorgeous. I have been off prints for some time now. I was very into them my entire life!. I don't mind print in a summer dress but for the rest not so much anymore, except stripes and plaids. I too have become a one bag person (almost). My metallic olive one with multiple compartments is just the right size and the colour feels very neutral to me. I can fully understand why your Bao bao is doing the same for you.

First off - I love that jacket on you! We are in full blown winter now so jackets seem like a thing of the distant past ,lol. I've seen a few pair of burgundy shoes and boots I quite liked - I've been out shopping for actual winter/snow boots lately ( new thing for me now that I take public transit home from work a few days a week - LOL) - and a few (can't recall brand names) really caught my eye enough that if I needed or had somewhere to wear burgundy shoes I'd have pounced. Our local Anthro closed in October and I miss it already. That green top is gorgeous and that store is so perfect for pieces like that. The burgundy sweater is gorgeous too and I'd wear that in a heartbeat .

As to style shifts? Absolulety. That's why I (tried) took a step back from the forum a year ago now. What I'm interested in isn't reflected here a lot. I'm lucky in that I wear a prescribed outfit everyday at work so really don't need much in the way of everyday clothing . I'm into the minimal, silhouette driven looks and don't really even wear jewellery or scarves anymore. I appreciate your narrower jeans in the photo - I'm getting wide/big pant fatigue.

Prints and colour are pretty much all gone from my closet now . I agree that handbags aren't very exciting at retail (at the level I can spend anyways) now. I was open to a new bag this fall, but everything is either very very pricey or really cheap looking. That in-between market seems to have either disappeared or is stuck in dated or repetitive looking styling.

Tailoring your tops is such a great move and I certainly could stand to do that myself. Nothing fitted for me (aging body changes I've had to make peace with ) or too tailored but having the right proportions is everything .

Excellent focussed style thoughts, Janet! Follow those feelings.

I can be very moody with patterns too. That’s why I stick to the few types of patterns I know I don’t tire of.

WOOOHOOO!! The right length of a top makes a huge difference, to my eye. Glad you’re taking a moment to get yours the right length. I don’t like tops too long either. They ruin the lines of my look. I get it!

Hope you find those burgundy boots.

Cute sequin top!

The jacket has potential. The plaid is fantastic with your hair! When you play around with it at home - make sure you like the shoulder fit. It looks a little wide in the pics. But that might be because it needs to be pulled straight. I like the fun fringe

Hi Janet. When you mentioned burgundy, I thought the same thing about how prevalent it would be this season. I haven't found one pair of burgundy shoes/boots anywhere except maybe Madewell. Even then it wasn't what I was looking for.

I've been also been in search of a quality burgundy/oxblood handbag and have found the bags either to be too conservative or too slouchy. Suddenly all bags tend to look the same for me and I've been searching.

As far as shifts lately, I don't even know what I like anymore. I'm still staying with black and neutrals and I do miss good prints, but haven't found anything I really like. I told myself that from now on I'm buying for quality, not quantity/price.

Wishing you luck and happy holidays.

Just some musings:

- I am still very attracted to prints and patterns, but am more wary of buying or wearing them these days, at least in tops. I can tire of them after a season or two. I’m more interested at the moment in adding solid color tops in colors that are my favorites. I have plenty of patterned scarves for when I want to add print.

- I’m leaning into ease as a marker of my style lately. I don’t want to look too matchy or too fitted or too ladylike. But there is a balance as always. Wide pants are great for that sense of ease, and once or twice I’ve worn roomy tops with them but end up feeling maybe a little too Billie Eilish for anything but the most casual wear. Truly *fitted* tops are problematic these days with post-menopausal weight changes, so I’m increasingly picky about fit. Skimming the body but not tight is best.

- Lately I’m slightly obsessed with making my tops the proper length. I’ve had a few tailored so that I’m not fussing to make too-long tops work for me. It’s been a game-changer to have some tops now fall gently to the hip without bunching and blousing, which creates nicer lines in an outfit.

- I’ve been on the low-key lookout for refined but comfortable burgundy booties with no success. I thought burgundy and forest green were supposed to be big this year, but my searches haven’t turned up much. I did get the Kut burgundy sweater pictured below, which is a nice lightweight option with textural interest (under it I wear a thin black Uniqlo heattech top or a black tank).

- I also got the green sequined sweater from Anthro in the second pic. I love the color and the ease. I seem to get a new sequined top for holidays approx once a decade — I wear it for years and multiple occasions until I’m tired of seeing it in my holiday photos (or it doesn’t fit anymore). This one is more casual but that seems appropriate for the vibe these days. Most gatherings are not very dressy, and this can be dressed up or down — with black tailored trousers and pumps, or faded denim and boots.

- I’ve given away a few of my old handbags that just aren’t being used these days. One aspect of my style that seems to be getting more streamlined. I’m not terribly tempted by any new styles I see out there. I use the grey Bao Bao flat backpack about 80% of the time.

- I was not shopping for a jacket (I actually was in this store to find Xmas presents for my MIL, which I did find successfully!), but sometimes they seem to find me. I have been embracing charcoal grey as a substitute for black, and this tonal plaid has always been a favorite of mine. The fringe on the collar and placket make it more fun than office-y, so it came home with me. I’m going to do an edit of jackets again — I’ve moved several into the holding zone because I’m not feeling them now, so I’m going to try to identify the shift I’m feeling and see if I’m ready to let some of these older items go.

Are you feeling any shifts lately? I welcome your thoughts!
