Those charcoal bits also make it easier to mix with other darker pieces. It's good to be picky about the brights! Especially if you only wear them when the mood strikes -- if the color is wrong you'll probably never be in the mood to wear it

I love the necktie in #1 - probably because I just can't pull one off. I have a couple small silk scarves that I've tried to wear and they make me feel uncomfortable, like I'm wearing a costume. I love the skirt in #4 and the striped sweater in #5.

Aida, your comment about bright vs muted really got me thinking, especially after Angie's post this morning. I love brights and saturated colours, but I'm really picky about them, and I almost always prefer smaller doses. They have to be just right for me to want to wear them. I love wearing red, for instance, but it has to be a true crimson red, not an orange-y tomato/poppy red.

I probably would not have been nearly as attracted to the sweater in #5 if it didn't have those charcoal stripes -- they tie it all together and "ground" the softer, brighter colours.

Also, personality and complexion aside, dark colours are sooo much easier with my lifestyle (see the giant toddler paintings on the floor in 5?). I wore a blush hoodie yesterday, and it's got mystery stains up and down the sleeves, and all I did was re-install some baseboard trim and heat up leftovers, lol. Now I have to take it out of rotation and see if I can oxy the stains out. My white denim jacket I tend to save for kid-free outings, for the same reason.

Glad my layered-up looks get Angie's seal of approval! Also glad the neckerchief works to others' eyes. I tried not to fuss with it too much. Sal -- my hair just hit three months of grow-out (total pixie sacrilege, I know!), So I'm glad it's still making a statement and not just a mess.

I love all these but 1 is my favourite - because I am jealous of how cool you look with that scarf/bandanna. That is how I want to look in one and cannot achieve it.

But they are all great. Your hair cut is a really strong style statement in itself.

I like the handknit and the striped sweater too.

Allbirds have a NZ director and use NZ merino. I bought a pair for my Mum but they didn't work for her (she can't wear shoes at all so it is no reflection on the Allbirds). I may well get a pair - for me they would be March- October shoes but not on super wet days. But my feet get pretty hot in mid summer and I love sandals best of all...

I think Allbirds is a NZ company -- they're merino, so it makes sense. They came on my radar about a year ago, and I bought a pair this spring when they came out with the slip-on style. I'd tried the original lace-up sneakers but did not love how they looked on my feet (they fit a little differently, and the toebox is quite low volume compared to these, and I didn't like the look of my toes poking up under the fabric). Anyway, they're heinously comfortable, lightweight, and feel buttery soft inside (much softer than any of the synthetic knit sneakers I've looked at). They are supposedly machine washable, but I haven't tried yet. I've heard some people complain about them being too hot for summer wear, but I brought them along on a couple city trips this summer, and found them fine in temps up to 90, but my feet don't really sweat. They are not much fun in the rain -- squishy wet wool! That they're pulling double-duty as slippers is an unexpected bonus. I think Jenn has the lace-up ones, and possibly a few others here as well.

Wow, JAileen, Audrey vibe is the ultimate compliment. Thanks!

Are these even in chronological order? Heck if I know!

You can see some patterns here. Boring, sturdy shoes, for one! Our November means wet snow. My light-wash Levi's -- I'm liking lighter jeans for darker days.

Most of these ended up with an ink blue puffer on top, either short or long, except for the one with the puffer vest and the one with the blazer.

Today (#1) is the black henley, olive pants, and neckerchief (for a hint of cream). I wore this colour formula a lot late summer/early fall, using these chinos, a black tank top, and my white denim jacket. With my black-and-white sandals, it felt perfect. It feels all right with my cold-weather shoes, but not as perfect. Oh -- and I'm wearing the Allbirds in the pic as slippers; when I went out, I put on my Blundstones. Again. No bare ankles this time of year!

#2 shows the silk scarf + sweatshirt mentioned in a thread on silk scarves last week. This colour palette makes me happy. I find sage + grey + navy very soothing.

#3 -- handknit sweater from my mom, handprinted scarf off of Etsy. This feels very New England native wear to me.

#4 -- same sweater, plus a puffy skirt!

#5 -- colorful cashmere. This sweater is a lifesaver on grey days. My students love this one.
