April, that’s lovely!

I’m working on a few patches of “ mini- meadow/short prairie “ ( climate is kind of in-between; annual rainfall is good EXCEPT long dry stretches in summer) ). Terrain is uneven and not very amenable to bringing in equipment, so mostly doing by hand.

Anyway, it is fun to learn about various plants, different kinds of meadow or prairie plantings, matrix gardening, the mix of grasses vs flowers, use of perennials, annuals, re-seeders. Authors like Ben Vogt, Neil Diboll, many others.

Ok, here's a before and after. Distant shot from the third floor, but if you look beyond the deer you can see the dead porcelain vines, 6 feet deep. And second one is how the same view looks now. (We moved in in winter, so the sycamore was not in leaf but those vines were just as dead in summer!)

Last year, we hosted the end-of-year cocktail party for a park conservancy where Mr. A serves on the board (matter of fact, they'll be back tonight for the same event.)

Someone told me that night he had a whole section of his land that he was going to make a meadow because he wanted to plant it once and then forget about it.

If only! It's a never-ending battle to keep ahead of the truly terrible actors (mugwort, porcelain vine, poison ivy, and so on). I'll see if I can find a picture that shows the original meadow when it was a hot mess of dead vines.

That is amazing! And also...I feel better. ;) We didn't do any of that, so our middling success makes more sense now. DH just killed the weeds that were there, pulled them all up, and sprinkled a seed packet. It's about 12 ft long and 2 ft wide, but still, probably needed more effort than that!

Peri, we started that meadow with a combination of plant plugs and seed mix. The gardeners rolled up all the sod and used it to build a berm of sorts between the meadow and a gravel access road that we built so the water engineer could get his heavy trucks into the back without driving over wetlands. They they lay down a gigantic burlap net to hold the seeds, and added some plugs between the big holes in the net.

The spring day of that installation (3 years ago?) it was freakishly cold and I was bringing thermoses of hot chocolate. Our gardeners run a farm in Costa Rica where they retreat for the winter and I know that day was quite a shock to them.

It was also a violently windy day and many of the seeds blew to one part of the meadow despite the netting. It took a few years to sort itself out.

This is incredible! Did you start from seeds or plants?

DH and I have been trying to have a wildflower patch from seeds but each year only about half come back and the rest are weeds. I'm always awed by big flowering meadows like these or those wildflower strips along highways.

Yes! The Daisy Hill Puppy Farm! :)

We have a doe who keeps getting back there despite Mr. A's extremely expensive (and hideous) deer fencing. I say if she's willing to make an 8-foot leap to munch on some plants, let her do it. But why? There is another delicious meadow in the front yard.

I guess deer are not known for logic.

Beautiful! We’ve grown coreopsis off and on. I love it, but for us, it’s a very short lived perennial.
Re pumpkins: we have two growing, a squatty french one, snd a giant one. It says 300 pounds! If we do grow a big one, I’m not sure how we would even get it to our front door for Halloween. It’s been so hot, I’m just hoping nothing dies.

My BIL has created a micro-meadow in his smaller yard and is reporting a "bee apocalypse". I texted him Pshaw - they're all at our house!

Also, we make much of bees and butterflies because they're lovely, but the most effective pollinators are actually flies.

Lately I have developed a fondness for these magnificent creatures, known as Common White-Tailed Dippers. Of course, only the males have white tails.

Many of you have heard me mention the meadows we've planted to replace an abundance of plain old grass in the 6 years we've been in this house.

Mr. A and I have been referring to them, somewhat lamely, as Meadow A, B and C. Recently we decided this will not do and so have renamed them the Pond Meadow, the Pumpkin Patch, and the Maple Meadow.

The Pumpkin Patch has no pumpkins growing in it. We call it that because when little white Bodie goes in there, he disappears except for you see a distinct rustling of the tops of plants until he emerges, which reminds us of Snoopy belly-crawling out of the pumpkin patch in Charlie Brown.

It's so pretty right now. The yellow is coreopsis, the white is foxglove, and in the early morning there is an abundance of purple (Ohio Spiderwort) that closes up later in the day, when I took these.
