I can see how thrifting has become more challenging, but from where I sit, you are more than up for the challenge! Emerging adulthood is a complex stage of development, for kids and parents alike :). It sounds like they will be moving on, yet still connected (with your own particular cultural context in the mix), which is where I am as well with my two. I was musing to my spouse on NYE that it's funny to go from the one out "partying" to the one who is worried about the kids celebrating with moderation and getting home safely. I really appreciate your support regarding the kids although I should clarify - it is not at all clear my kids are actually leaving the house. The situation of being drafted is a bit complicated, but it is quite normal to have day jobs and live at home. I will know more about DDs in the next few months. DS has a job already and will gone for training but then home for a while at least. Sally everything I am wearing in both pictures is second hand - some consignment some charity shop. The jeans are old J Brand boyfriend jeans that I cuffed up. Runcarla - Amazing finds! I am still finding good stuff at charity shops, but I am tempted more and more by specific, and more expensive, consignment. jussie,   Actually I think the coat is more of a salmon than exactly orange. I used to think it is pink but seeing it hanging next to some other pink things makes me rethink! Jenni NZ - Wonderful that you have your kids nearby! I do sometimes think my bags are a bit big but I like to stuff a lot in them . slim cat - Thank you for the hair compliment - I'm due for a haircut actually! Sal - It is so nice to hear other people in my stage of life. Great finds - I will pay up to about $100 for some things, but it requires much more thought than paying $5 or less - for better and for worse. unfrumped - It has taken me years to collect my wardrobe and I had several advantages including being an early adopter and near some great charity shops. On the other hand, these days it is easier than other to find great second hand online - not as cheap as a charity shop but still great bargains can be found. Suz - Great eye! I count those boots as some of my best finds of the year. They are Massimo Dutti and in a similar shape to Angie's J Crew boots (I think). The silver earrings are from my collection of thrifted silver. It used to be pretty easy to find sterling while thrifting for cheap. Not so much anymore! Nonetheless, I still think it is worthwhile to look around - there are also more shops and more people reselling than ever before.  As you know, kids in Israel never get very far from home . The orange coat is so good. I don’t have much luck thrifting, I do find an occasional piece at the consignment shop near me (where I mostly sell stuff rather than buy). It always seems the best stuff is not my size, and a lot of it is just too conservative (this particular area skews traditional/preppy — the higher-end things tend to be St John and the like). I hear you on feeling a change as the kids reach these milestones. My stepsons are now in their 30s, and the youngest and his wife are now planning for kids. Gulp! I’m not ready for that role in my life yet! But still, thrilled for them when it happens. It’s just crazy how fast it all goes. Part of the reason is because I am (well, I was) tall, and it was always harder to find things proportioned right. Tell us more!  On the life transitions...it cannot be easy to watch one's children head off to military service. My stepson's large family have taken various routes (some in military proper and some in community service) and for most it has worked out well and they have not entirely flown the coop -- they seem to move in and out. Nevertheless, there is no question that this is a major transition for all, and will mean a very changed atmosphere at home. One of my friends has a daughter heading just two hours down the road to university and she is freaking out!  Your reflections on thrifting are so interesting. I find I can't meet with success at true thrift here (or I haven't, thus far) but do have some success (or did, in Vancouver) with consignment, which of course is much more expensive. One of my goals this year is to head out to the consignment shops in this city, which I have yet to visit. I have visited a few thrift locations and was less than thrilled. It is so location-specific, though! I'm also curious about possibly reselling a few items I would otherwise donate. Wishing the best for you and your kids’ next phases. I wish there were more good second hand shops nearby. Several have closed in past few years. Before retirement I didn’t have much time to make frequent visits and sort through things for random scores, then, pandemic, and closings. I would mostly look for treasure hunt of finding something with details of construction or fabrics no longer found in usual retail. Or, for an item from recent past seasons of regular brand that was still in my style preference , or maybe a color I hadn’t known about. Sense of self may take something of a battering, in my experience. When they leave home they leave a gap, but then we have all ours back again currently, some in next door house, and it feels a real blessing to be able to house them like that for now. Housing is so expensive here. As far as clothing, yes, we went to the for-profit second-hand store recently looking for yellow items for myself and Neil for the Haldi ceremony mid-year and were rather surprised at the prices. The charity thrift stores are still cheaper. There is a lot of information available online about clothing brands and I suppose secondhand is more desirable for sustainability reasons these days, to more people? Love your outfits.
