Thanks Chloe. I was also thinking about what exercises might help.
Maneera, your decision is sound. Stick to it.

I'll be brief. I'm a personal trainer and rowing (or anything action that causes you to "pull") will help trim back fat.
I like to use an elastic resistance band that fits in the door jam. All kinds of rowing and pulling you can do to work the core!

Best wishes!

If you take off your bra and the roll disappears, then it's the bra that's the problem, not your figure. I suspect if the bra was sitting lower on that model, there'd be no roll. This is one of those "you need a smaller band and larger cups" fit issues.

A roll will start appearing on me when my bra is wearing out, making the band looser and prone to creeping up in the back rather than staying put. Case in point: a few months ago I thought it was time for another bra fitting due to weight gain, because my bras seemed to be creating unsightly rolls not just in the back but the front and sides. So I went to have a fitting and lo and behold, I am still in the exact same bra size -- it's just that the bras needed replacing because they'd stretched out too much in the band. Same size, new bra, exact same style/brand -- made all the difference.

My DD gets this issue even more so than I do, because she's got a much tinier waist. She's quite busty with broad shoulders narrowing down to a tiny waist like a triangle, whereas I'm more like a rectangle. We go bra shopping together so we have someone to check our backs etc for fit. We long ago figured out that the bra band needs to sit lower to be most flattering in the rear view. Though she's larger than me (wears a size L tee and I wear a size SP tee and is 4 inches taller) she takes a 32 band and I take a 34. The difference is the tiny waist. If she puts on a 34 band it rides right up in back-- and produces back rolls.

Sorry to go OT here, but I'm laughing about those baby swim classes. Mine started at progressively later ages, and I never ever got in that awful pool with the littlest, she only started lessons when she didn't need me!

Maneera, you have gorgeous curves. Take Jenavas advice and get on with enjoying life.

XO Jenava. I'm sporting a top today that I absolutely LOVE without a doubt. It was also the top that my sister said gives me 'back boobs'. Such a lame term! I'm wearing it nonetheless....and I really don't care. As Jaileen says - I'm just not going to look at my back. And I anyways cannot see it unless I turn sideways!

I can't thank you enough for your words. They really really resonate with me. We are who we are. And as Angie says, if there is a little *extra* of u to love, love it with all your heart! I'm feeling insanely better today....now that I've made my peace. Thanks again

For the record, I think that you're so very pretty, your few extra pounds barely make any difference. All I notice when I look at you is your perfect face with delicate features, gorgeous tresses and soft feminine curves. I bet that's all your friends see at swimming class too.

Late to this thread but chiming in to sympathise about those baby swim classes.

Jenava, I wonder if you do the same songs I used to do - Humpty Dumpty, Monkey Monkey Monkey....and listening to some Mum telling you how advanced her baby is while yours is screaming at the side of the pool, or jumping in before you get to three just for fun....... It was a very happy day when I could observe from the side.

xo, Maneera. I've been doing a lot of making peace...would I love to be in great shape and 30 pounds lighter? Yes. Am I going to let my desire to be lighter stop me from enjoying the life I have right now? No. Most recent example is having to don a swimming suit in front of friends 2x per week for baby swim classes. Sigh.

I went bra shopping today and made sure to wear the top I own with the most cling. It was very helpful in determining how the bras were fitting, including the back view.

I found that there was a positive correlation between the bra sitting smoother on my back and it being more flattering and comfortable overall.

I've noticed this more as I've gotten older; I don't think I had this in my 20s or 30s when I was heavier but had the firmer flesh of youth. Bras with three hooks are better than two, but I can rarely find them in my size. The other thing that helps a tad after you put your bra on and have done the swoop'n'scoop is to pull the band out a bit in the middle for a second or two. It will release any flesh that has been squeezed up or down so that it sits in its normal place.

That it's OK to have some back flab. It's just another 'curve' as Crazyone puts it.

Jenava - I'm going to take your advice to heart. I'm going to make peace with it

All the practical advice has been given so I'm just adding that I wonder if this isn't a little dramatized by having a label like "unsightly back flab".
Once they have names like flat chested or cankles, completely normal body parts suddenly seem unusual or worse.

You have the sweetest and most lovely face and a lovely figure and a little chub around the back is probably in complete harmony with the rest of you.

I have some of this too, even though I have a fairly narrow back, so yeah, how much fat can really be back there, right? And yes, it's more significant when I am actually wearing the correct bra size. I just try to stay away from tops that are too thin and clingy so it doesn't show so much.

Another solution is just to make peace with it by realizing that NO ONE is noticing it as much as you are, and most others have the exact same thing. On the positive side, it means you aren't starving! Don't let anxiety about this small thing keep you from wearing clothes you enjoy.

I know there are bras with very wide backs designed to help with this. I have no recommendations though. I would say to avoid thin, clingy fabrics. Or, size up in those items for a looser fit. It's not necessarily a body size issue. I'm pretty thin and I've passed on thin, clingy tees for this very reason. Women are supposed to have a bit of fat on the body so even if you are thin you can still get that dreaded back view with the wrong item.

I bra with a wider strap worn lower on the back helps a lot. And avoid clingy fabrics.

Would a longline bra help? Something like this:
http://www.herroom.com/cleo-by.....adv&u

Ok, so it's just body shape then. And Lisa, if a bra-fitter told you that, I don't doubt it for a second. I just wanted to make sure I'm not the only one with this issue.....because my bra size is definitely correct.

To be honest, I never noticed this myself. It was my sister who pointed it out (like always!) that my top looks weird from behind. And then I started to see it all the time *rolls eyes* Sometimes I love my poor observation sense! What you don't know can't bother you, right?! ;D

Una, if that DKNY shapewear helps, so let us know!

Oh, I have a bit of this too. No matter what bra I wear I always get it to some extent. Smoothing skimming cami's and skimming tops help. And also a print can disguise it too. Per Lisa's reply, I've started a few more back related exercises to try to firm up the area.

The only time I never had the problem was after I'd caught Glandular fever and my weight went down to 7.5 stone(at which point I was way too thin for my height)...not a healthy way to get rid of it!

I was just thinking about this myself. I tied a VC top and the 3 way mirror at Nordies did me in. No suggestions but I am going to check out the back view with that DKNY smoother thing I bought.

Lat pull-downs, and avoiding body clinging tops I think it's very common , btw. I remember "complaining" about it to a bra fitter a few years ago, and her comment was that even the best fitting bras can only do so much there.
