You can get the cobbler to put rubber bits on the heels or at the ball of the foot, which will usually muffle the sound. That said, I actually LOVE clompy shoes. It's like my "power" thing. A confident stride in stompy shoes. Love it.

I use tape on the bottom of my irish dance shoes (tap shoes) to make them less slippery, and it definitely does not make them quieter. (The noise is important!) That's with duct tape or gaffer tape; maybe other tape is different.

I get my shoes and boots re-heeled to make them quieter. You don't need to do the whole sole. For high heels, it can be as simple as a new little tip for the heel.

I looked on line and found that masking tape can be used. Does anyone have experience with that?

Ha! I was just thinking about this yesterday. Those big-heeled Frye boots I wore are awfully clompy on the terrazzo and marble stairs in the 100-year-old building where I work. I guess my neighbors can hear when I'm coming or going. ;-)

I wonder if some of those non- slip pads from the cobbler would help.

Watching for ideas. I have the same problem with a couple of pairs of footwear. Never have inquired at Cobbler re: a small rubber heel thingy or whatnot to muffle it.

I suppose it depends on where you are. I'm okay with making some noise so people know I'm coming. That said, my shoes don't clomp, they make the high heel click clack sound. So not much help, I'm afraid.

I have several pairs of boots that make me feel like a horse. Clomp clomp clomp. Particularly annoying when walking in a quiet area. They have hard soles and I'm not real thrilled with the idea of having them resoled so looking for something easy - if such a thing exists. Note to self: try out shoes on hard surface before buying.
