Well, to clarify, I'm not sure if they're wimpy in general, but they are wimpy for me Tanya and Angie have 37" shoulders and they are both waaaay smaller than me (and taller, which makes them look even smaller). So based on the rest of my proportions, they are really small.

Size charts are useless. They always peg me as a size 6 or 8. I don't think I have ever worn a 6 or 8 in my entire adult life.

I have to advise getting someone else to measure them (the shoulders, that is) just to be sure. When I tried measuring them myself, I got 38", which is clearly wrong. When my mom did it for me, it came to 36".

Yeah I've found that wool coats are especially difficult to size properly since they tend to be unforgiving when it comes to stretch. Size charts are typically never helpful. I kind of wonder why S&K doesn't mention shoulder size when it's absolutely crucial for buying jackets? I don't blame you for not wanting to go that route. :)

Isn't it bizarre that 36" shoulders are "wimpy," 37" are normal and 38" are large? Gah!

I am not trusting enough to go that route I guess. Size charts and blind fit advice never seems to work for me. Maybe I'm just a freak! Coats are the one clothing item in which I can (and for all intents and purposes, HAVE TO) wear a high neckline. I have a long neck and adore funnel necks. This is just my personal and eternal "challenge" with clothes: fitting my wimpy 36" shoulders while also fitting my ample bosom.

I can still fit into my current coat but the button placement on my chest is less than ideal and it is a big snug. That coat is a BR XS. It fits everywhere else though.

Julijuli, having had wool coats in the past they hold up well to light rain, but if it's pouring I've had some jackets get saturated. :/ Maybe S&K is higher quality though?

Shiny, I actually emailed the company and gave them my measurements and asked what size they would recommend for the Cali, and they said that an XS would be best, so I'm gonna give that a try (in the future when I have $400 to burn! :p). I have an average to long neck and I LOVE funnel necks, so that shouldn't be a problem for me...hemming may have to happen, but we'll see! I'm terribly in love with this coat. The bright side is if it doesn't work out, I can always send it back. Yay internet! ^_^

Maya, if you're not sure of your size the S&K people are very prompt at responding to questions, so you could always ask them too.

I'm your height and similar measurements. I take an XS in this brand for rain coats - BUT! - I have tried wool coats in XS on and they wouldn't even button. However, that was at a discounter place, so it is possible that they were manufacturing rejects. Or this brand runs inconsistently.

Also, one caution: if your neck is short, this sort of collar can be overwhelming. I returned my S+K that had this neckline. And, even if it had a different neckline, the sizing lengthwise was off - waist hit not quite right, length definitely would've required major hemming. My hunch is the Sheena will work better, because it has an empire waistline and is meant to be shorter. The Cali would worry me... I guess the belt could be moved up, but those pockets are huge, may not be the right scale for someone petite?

I would really like to try a S&K coat. They seem to have a lot of dramatic funnel neck collars that I really like, though I don't think I could afford one full price. Should I go up to a medium then? Sorry to hijack your thread, Oneirix...

Man I wish there were more places like Nordstrom and TJ Maxx around here. That drive over the hill is a killer. We definitely don't get true winters in CA but I'm so tired of buying jackets that just aren't warm enough! I'm glad the wool will be warm though; I like that styling quite a bit. :)

I think I'm going to go with an XS and see what happens! If the shoulders are too restrictive I'll definitely size up. I'm so glad to hear that they run narrow; if I do have to size up hopefully I won't end up with a swing jacket! Thanks everyone for the great information! ^_^

I also saw a bunch last winter at Marshalls/TJ Maxx. I found that they ran small and as much as I love the funnel neck coats, they just didn't suit my body type. I adore the ones that you have linked to - especially the wool one. I used to live in Santa Clara and I don't think I even owned a true winter coat the whole time I lived in CA so I cannot imagine that you would need a down coat (unless you spend alot of time in Tahoe)!!!

p.s. I saw A LOT of S & K wool coats at Nordstrom Rack recently, and prices were about $200.

I’m 33-24-34 and 5ft 6. My shoulders are also 37. Tanya and I are virtually body doubles. I’m a little straighter though. And you have similar measurements to us too. It’s hard to say oneirix – you might need to order both XS and S.

S&K coats are cut quite slim and it will also depend on the style itself. I wear an XS in this brand and am able to layer 3 items underneath – and that includes a small jacket. Judging by your measurements, you’ll probably fit into an XS with one, maybe two layers underneath. Perhaps that’s fine. Perhaps you’re in-between sizes? Only one way to find out.

Whoa thanks for all the great help guys! It seems that Soia & Kyo is rather popular here (and with good reason)!

So Angie suggests an S! Do you think it will still fit me in the body? I like a very slim cut; while of course I don't want it so tight that the under layer pokes through the fabric I'm not a fan of a lot of ease. If I have to get it tailored I'd probably be happier with having slightly constricted shoulders since tailoring jackets is so expensive...

Thanks for the advice Tanya. I think I've been won over to the wool then. x_x I'm gonna have to roll up my sleeves to afford that one, but then I finally have a winter coat I love!

My experience with S&K is that the trench coats were cut narrower in the shoulders ( I think that it was a trench that Brianna found constricting), while that is not the case with wool coats and puffers. I'd say that the wool coat is plenty warm for CA

Ahh soo informative! Thank you very much Tanya! Do you think there's enough ease in the shoulders for an extra inch? And do you think the wool coat is warm enough for California winters? XD I know it sounds silly, but I like the toastiness of a puffer in the winter but the silhouette is not quite as clean to my eye.

I have two S&K coats in XS and they fit me just right in the shoulders. I am 34-23-35, 5'6", and I have just measured my shoulders, they are 37". One of the coats is wool and it is very warm, the warmest wool coat I have ever had, although of course down puffers are always warmer.

Well, it hasn't gotten nippy here in Santa Cruz just yet, but I need to start saving for a warm jacket. Soia & Kyo is the exact aesthetic I'm looking for, but I have a couple of questions regarding fit and warmth.

I'm pretty small, 5' tall 33-25-35, but my shoulders come in at a whopping 38" so finding jackets that fit me in the shoulders and still remain flattering is a little tough. According to their measurements I ought to get an XXS or an XS, but I *know* that those will be way too small in the shoulders. Do any of you lovely ladies own one of these jackets, and if so how do the shoulders fit?

Also now that I've got you here (:p) I'm wondering if the wool jackets are warm enough? These are the two I'm deliberating between:

http://www.soiakyo.com/app/web.....&pg=1

I like the look of the wool one better, but in past experiences wool coats have not been as warm as I would like. Any thoughts?
