If I want it to look deliberate, I'll wear socks like Always Trying pictured. When I don't want anyone to notice, I'll wear nude hosiery and peds or socks that are exactly the same color as the boots. When I've worn socks that are the exact same color as the boot, people have commented that they didn't notice the sock, they thought it was the boot.

I did the socks in booties look last fall but it was more about having something between the boot and my lower leg than warmth. I really like the look Joy described on others but find I need it to look more deliberate for me so I rolled the socks quite neatly to just come above the bootie by a little bit.

I've not worn ankle pants before in cool weather to even want warmth but I like the look of wooly socks pushed down into the top of the bootie. This would also help fill the gap between leg and boot, if that is a problem. I also wear sheer nude knee highs for warmth until it gets too cold.

I am an unrepentant wearer of socks, whatever the prevailing opinion on the forum.. (In cool weather, that is.) Largely because I detest hose with a passion, and spend so much of the winter in boots (outdoors) that I don't want to start booties too early (and the winter boots don't come indoors).

If I'm wearing ankle pants and flat shoes in cool weather, I will choose the socks to complement the outfit. I like stripes and menswear patterns, usually in black and grey like the rest of my outfit. Although around holiday times I have been known to wear colourful themed socks, always classy of course (ahem).

In another vein, today on Rachel Zoe's website I saw a fall outfit that involved rolled jeans and those (to me, seasonally confused) cutout booties--worn with the big heathered-grey wool socks my hipster daughter lives in, and it looked really good!

I wear either nude knee-high stockings, thick black dressy hose for "ankle bearing" in winter specifically with high contrast looks (similar to the third photo that AT posted above; if your hair isn't dark you may need to add an additional dark element to balance), and very occasionally with a casual outfit very textured/chunky knit socks. I think it's fine for socks to show when you're sitting

My solution is mid-calf boots. But, assuming you don't want to buy a whole bunch of shoes.... I think socks, if done well, can be cute. I would personally go for cute/funky patterns or colors, maybe scrunch them a little bit. Or nude knee highs for a more elegant look. What I don't like is when it's worn with black trouser socks or (shudder) white athletic socks.

If you search Pinterest and other blogs you will find lots of sock and booties ideas. See a couple of the photos I saved below. Socks showing is not a bad thing. For sporty looks with jeans I wear the patterned or colored socks like stripes. for dressier then either seer hose or socks the color of the booties.

My solution is to wear full-length pants when it's cold, but I know that ankle pants have almost entirely dominated the retail landscape in recent years, so that's not always so easy to do.

I have the Hue footies that don't show with shoes, and I like to wear slightly short pants with ankle showing and oxfords or penny loafers. This helps to prevent "stank foot" because it does gross me out to wear shoes with no sock or liner at all!
It's funny because I have noticed more and more (both men and women) wearing the calf length socks with shorts. If you prefer to cover your ankle, I think there is a good sock look that can work with most things.

I am okay with socks showing.

Of course, it needs to be an appropriate sock for the rest of the outfit. I have a lot of striped socks that I like to wear, especially when I know they will peak out over the top of my shoe. But just a plain/neutral sock wouldn't bother me.

In fact, if I don't see a sock then I often wonder if there is any sort of foot covering and if not then I start thinking "stank foot" and that is way worse than seeing a sock!

Now that it is colder, is it ever okay to have socks that show?
My wardrobe is entirely ankle pants. I have not found a pair of high ankle boots yet where the pant falls outside of the shaft of the boot. So my sock was showing yesterday when I sat down. Is it ever okay to have your socks show? What is your solution to staying warmer in ankle boots, ankle pants and dealing with socks in general? I supposed you could wear a tall boot under an ankle pant?
Thanks!
