I hate socks! I only wear socks in dead of winter. The seams always hurt my 2nd toe. I don't think about them much, so generally I buy what I find at Marshall's and what feels nice and won't itch or make my feet sweat. And black. Only black.
When it comes to wardrobe basics like underwear, bras, camis, socks and such, I've really pared down to only blacks, nudes or grays so they go with everything and I don't have to think too much about underpinnings.

April, I’ve gotten both thinner and thicker socks from Bombas. I think the ones I got that are thinner and suitable for wearing with dressier (non sneaker) shoes were the lightweight calf: https://bombas.com/products/wo.....iant=cream

For compression socks, I like the ones from Duluth Trading. They make two versions and I’ve always gotten the less compressive ones. Durable, not too pricey, and make a surprising difference.

Feeling like a bit of a curmudgeon, can I say that I dislike "fun" socks. Colorful, whimsical, jolly socks -- nope.

Give me plain, comfortable, nice-feeling, non-squeezy hosiery in boring neutrals. Off to look at the thin SmartWool offerings...

April, SmartWool makes thin socks.
They just wear out a lot more quickly than they used to do.

Like Janet, I shifted to DT, despite SA's warnings of some shrinking. I wash cold and line-dry anyway. So far, so ...tired of the first ugly colors I bought, because they simply will not wear out!

Can I add a question to your thread, Minimalist?

People who love Bombas or SmartWool -- can you say a little about fitting your shoes over these socks? I find the thickness of either brand makes my shoes uncomfortably tight.

I've given up on Smartwool -- they were wearing out too quickly for what they cost. Darn Tough is my new jam -- if they don't work for any reason, no matter how long since purchase, they will send you a voucher for a new pair.

I'm having more and more trouble with socks falling down inside my boots lately. Not sure what's going on there. Knee high socks would solve that, but I don't want knee highs under skinny jeans as they create an ugly bulge under the knee.

I have terrible issues with socks. If they fit my foot, they squeeze it from side to side, which is painful (neuromas on both feet). If I size up, they fall down and/or bunch up.

I have sometimes splurged for the ultra-smooth "velvet" socks from Wolford. Expensive, but touching the fabric is a genuine pleasure.

My last batches of socks were bought at H&M, because they seemed to be the only place that made socks in smaller sizes than standard (you buy based on your shoe size). They also had styles that were made of all-natural fibers, which is next to impossible for me to find. Smartwool makes socks in sizes too, I think, but they're much more expensive.

I also have some nude fishnet anklets that I bought from Free People.

My favorites are Smart Wool PhD non padded socks. They are made for runners so a minimum of seams. The wool is washable and not itchy. I wash them in the washing machine and air dry.

For work, a former YLF'er turned me on to these. Don't pay full price, they often have sales posted on facebook.

Not cheap, I found these at a Food Co-op. But they're really nice, and made in the USA
https://zkano.com/

Socks are something I like to not have to think about when wearing them. Which requires a bit of effort on the front end.

What hosiery sources do you favor?

Long I'd assumed that frequent flying meant ugly, all-synthetic compression stockings. Now, I'm getting a kick out of these:
https://sockwellusa.com/products/womens-new-leaf
