When I see someone wearing flip flops, I think of the poor people in Central America who wear them because they can't afford better shoes. To me, flip flops are at the bottom of the barrel fashion wise. Besides that, they aren't comfortable.

On a slightly different note, I have thought in the past that we (or I) may be developing YLF-influenced "eye" for certain items. So that when I see someone wearing orange this spring I might think "how current" but the rest of the people around me might just wonder "why is she wearing orange?"

Maybe color is not a good example since most people who keep track of what is available in stores will at least be aware of which colors are popular this season. But something like two-colored oxfords, column of denim, or color blocking, for example, are not the looks I would have appreciated before YLF. So if I put together an outfit using these elements, I can expect to find a warm reception here but I sometimes wonder whether the people around me see it with the same eye.

By the way, back to your original post, I too figured out that belting or tucking rarely works for me so rarely do it. I did discover the use of belts under cardigans to create illusion of a waist thanks to YLF, though. Some things I have always liked (bright colors, stripes, flats) have been reinforced by YLF. And some things I never plan on trying (like denim on denim for me), even if I might like it on other people. I do think that for me the most valuable aspect of reading this site is finding how to better put together outfits that work for my taste, not someone else's, although my taste may be affected by reading YLF (or fashion magazines) as well.

Lots and lots of great thoughts and insights shared here.

Just one thought to contribute and, as always, you're free to take it or ignore it as pleases you but I would use 'conventions' instead of 'rules' when I'm looking at certain YLF style factors.

I think it comes from my mathematics background and what 'rules' mean to me (i.e. *shaking head in sorrow* All those lovely math 'rules' are NOT meant to be broken

Fruitful is right; every community forms unspoken "rules" and mores.

And Una's right, too. Active participation shifts the paradigm. And this culture is one that is very open to shifts and readjustments.

Thanks Fruitful! Shifting the paradigm is my goal in life. "Indian women are submissive." NOT! "You're way too old to wear that." HA! "Rock climbers don't wear lipstick." PUCKER UP!

All joking aside, this is what I've learned through my struggles - if anyone thinks YLF style is not "your" style, you can change that by posting your outfits. For instance, people who might think short skirts can't be worn by over 40 can look to Mo now. People who are not in the UWP tribe will still point out items they spy for those who are. Sometimes a little step is all it takes... And I can't tell you how much fun it is when someone who already has a strong and new to me/different sense of style comes along!

Angie and the whole community here are entirely unique in my experience for making this place so utterly civil, tolerant and welcoming.

(Sorry, just read the Hunger Games trilogy and am obsessed with the idea of a small gesture starting a revolution!)

*shhhhh, don't tell anyone* but I think Uggs are cute, too. I remember seeing a picture of Kate Middleton before she was the Duchess of Cambridge, she was wearing skinnies, Uggs some kind of floaty tunic with pretty earrings and her long hair flowing and I though, "Ooooo, I want a pair of those!"

This has been a very interesting read for me. I love You Look Fab with my whole heart but i will admit to feeling this way before. Posting a WIW of a maxi skirt or a pair of short shorts and at the same time thinking, "eeehh...they're not going to like this.". But you know what? Every single time i have been blown away by positive comments. I mean heck, i posted about wanting a Spirit Hood (i never ended up getting one btw, too many middle schoolers now rock them) months back and even found a few friends. Your outfit it may not be everyone's cup of tea or style but never ever have i posted a look and received 0 feedback or negative feedback. I think this is what makes our community great.

So i say, wear and post what you love. You might be surprised at who ends up liking the look. At the same time be open to constructive criticism if there is any, to help your style become even better.

I have not really ever been aware of things that are encouraged and things that are not - perhaps, I'm just not paying attention. To me YLF has just been about having fun.

The thing that initially attracted me to YLF was the acceptance of all different kinds of styles and looks. I think that Angie's "Team ? or Team ?" is a good example of the permission that we get here to have our own preferences. I also have found that when Angie writes about new trends or options nf how to dress, that it is done in a tone that is permissive to try or reject her suggestions or recommendations. When someone posts a WIW, if they do not ask for suggestions or opinions on something specific then I make a point to never give them any suggestions or opinions - I will only comment about the outfit - nothing more than that. I think that as more and more people post pics on the site, that it will only enrich and expand everyones' views and ideas of what it means to have fun with fashion!

(Thanks, Bella).

This thread has helped crystallize my thoughts on a very difficult blog post I am writing about style. Stay tuned.

I want to keep my response here short and simple:

- do not exclude

- have an opinion

I do not want people to feel uncomfortable because they perceive certain items to be frowned upon. YLF is about all types of style preferences and personas (that is clear from the WiW's that are posted here). Of course, people will have their opinions, (I personally have strong opinions), and they will also be respectfully stated and heard. There are plenty of items and outfit combinations that I find very stylish - but do not win the hearts of the majority of this forum. There will always be instances like this in fashion and style.

Elisabeth: Boots, esp. tall boots are very popular here. I live in a mild climate and never got in the habit of wearing boots. My very nice classic boots must have been hiding in the back of my closet for years and years (don't remember buying them) until I unearthed them this past fall. I tried (once) tucking pants into boots; didn't like the look. I had to force myself to wear them a couple of times this year.

You will never find me in a tunic or flowy top; they are stumpifyingly wrong for my proportions. I am firmly in Team Tuck, Team Scarf, and mostly in Team Belt.

I love jeans with unfashionably high rises and comfortable shoes that look too much like potatoes.

HOWEVER, I am willing to push my own style limits as long as it doesn't physically hurt. (I'm pretty sure that Fryes are too narrow for my bunioned feet. Sniff, sniff.)

This place seems to be great for getting feedback on whether something fits -- when our own emotions blind us because we like something so much. I love the variety of styles, ages, shapes, and sizes of women here. I also love the WIW a year ago and now -- because I get so intimidated by the *perfect* stylers, and it is reassuring to see that a year ago or more they might have had 8s or 9s instead of perfect 10s. Although I think that certain trendy items and looks are popular, I have always had the feeling that alternative styles are supported.

Elisabeth, despite all the posts saying nobody will tell you what you should wear, and that there are no rules, you have hit upon how culture works: lots of inchoate rules based on what the key figures and then the majority are doing. So I agree with you there are YLF rules, even if nobody ever states them!

Because of this, I think it's important to approach your own outfit posts with a very clear sense of what you value, aspire to, or simply like, before you start processing other people's feedback. Know that it's human nature that no matter how objective people try to be (and some people do a surprisingly skilful job of this) we view the world through the lenses of our own beliefs and experiences.

I have experimented enough with outfits to know a belt will nearly always make me look worse, that ballet flats stumpify me, that delicate shoes will make my calves look bigger. I know my own preferences enough to know I won't be comfortable in low vamp pumps despite their leg-lengthening properties. I know my own community well enough that when a poster here told me my shoes were too informal for an event, I trusted my instincts and wore them anyway - and got killer ratings from the real life people around me.

I think recognising the unspoken rules is important, otherwise I would have been thrown for a loop and taken advice that doesn't really work for me. I applaud the fact that you do.

Now go out and have fun with fashion, and remember what Vildy said, and also what Una said about shifting the culture by making yourself visible in it (love this idea, thanks Una!) ^_^

I have somewhat similar thoughts on what is more widely worn and popular here. But I have to say, when I posted my long weekend of WIW in Miami a few months back, I realized upon further inspection it included absolutely all the no-no's lol! Maxi dress - check. Denim mini - check. Flip flops - check. Corduroy pants - check. Short shorts - check. Short sleeve tee - check. And I felt FAB all weekend long!!
guess all I was missing was the Uggs and a hoodie in the mix

"I *only* accept/seek ideas that will EXPAND my choices of what to wear, how to wear it.
I don't take on any opinions that would contract my choices. "

Couldn't have said it better, just beautiful!

Since Uggs is mentioned so often, I have to chime in. I think they are adorable and cute. Unfortunately for these reasons I do not want to wear them. I live in a cold winter climate and I don't know if it is because I see them on children and teenagers or the slush and salt marks on them just make them look sloppy. It's hard to look polished in a salt-stained pair of boots.

I wear a lot of things that aren't widely loved here and I don't love a lot of things that seems people just do backflips over and scramble to copy.
Mad pattern mixing
multiple colors in one outfit
flats
thrifting
converse tennis
graphic tees
Doc Martins
uggs
plaid anything
printed pants
stripes
bright tights
denim in popular bright colors
And I am sure many other things that just don't work into my style...I am totally ok with that, I tend to not follow the large crowd in any aspect of my life, particularly fashion:)
Not that the gals here don't look fab in all these, but I won't wear them just because they are loved on the forum.

Hi Elisabeth,
I almost never tuck (I feel shortwaisted). My compromise is to sometimes "partially tuck". I don't like most flip flops because of how it makes people walk (sort of a duck waddle when viewed from the rear). Uggs are ugh! but that is just me. Crocs are cute on a toddler but I feel silly and juvenile in them. I WILL wear nude hosiery with dresses in the summer because my legs have spider veins. That being said, I do feel that discussing why we like or don't like some things makes us more aware of style in general. I know myself that there are things I am considering trying (skinnies I'm looking at you!) that I wouldn't have considered before and like you Elisabeth, I will continue to try to find a belted look that works for me. What has been the most fun for me is just trying out different stuff that has been suggested. It's been sort of like having hundreds of fabulous ladies going shopping with me.

Thanks, everyone! I wasn't losing any sleep over this, but I did think it was sort of funny that I seem totally unable to "pull off" certain popular YLF things that many of you are able to do and look smashing. Often I'll see WIW posts and commenters will say, "Try tucking it in!" or "Throw on a belt!"....but when I try it myself, the results are comical. Really, I should start posting WIW (or What I Might Try for a Laugh but Wouldn't Be Caught Dead In Outside the House) so you all can see just how very comical it is. :-)

And as for Uggs: I know they are *supposed* to be ugly and that's the whole point, but I really don't think they are! Worn correctly, I think they're adorable.

On the subject of Uggs, I wear mine (three pairs!) happily and comfortably. I know they don't look fab (with the exception of the Lynneas, which are quite fab IMHO), but honestly, they are like comfort food for my feet.

I used to feel there was a prevailing norm here that I did not fit, and I posted about it ("Is there a YLF style?" or something like that). For a while I even tried to copy what I saw as that style. But that didn't work for me, and once I started posting my own WIWs and getting love, feedback and encouragement for my own style, I realized that this community really is able to look at everything with an unbiased eye. I posted lots of questions like "Do you give truthful feedback?" and "Do you have poison eye?" and got tons of thoughtful answers that reassured me even more.

There is no one exactly like anyone else, like (just by way of example) Anna, or Heather, or MaryK, or Kelly, or Aida, or Rae, or Brenda or Natalie or Claire or Suz... or me, or YOU!
By posting your WIWs you will cast your style into the arena and shift the paradigm, such as you see it. After all, the style here is made up of the community posting, and that will evolve and morph as people contribute.

You know I want to see your outfits - if only for selfish reasons!

Um, I have a huge collection of rarely used belts. I rarely tuck. Also have a sizeable rarely worn ballet flat collection. I wear tights, but no micro-fishnets.
I definitely do things that aren't popular on the forum. Heck, even in my last WIW, the general paucity of comments speaks volumes.

I want to chime in. First of all, the first rule here at YLF is to have fun with fashion. So, all the fashion rules, guidelines, suggestions, templates become null and void if dressing up stops being fun.

That said, Angie has only a few items that she doesn't "approve of" - for lack of a better word: Uggs (even then not the fashionable kind with nice soles, laces, etc., but the regular, common uggs), plastic flip flops (when they are worn outside of activities that require such footwear, such as pool, beachside, working in the garden, etc.), and casual maxi dresses. Of the top of my head, these are the only three things that I can remember her being not fond of.

At other times, when Angie makes certain suggestions to the outfits posted on the forum, I believe that she keeps certain things in mind, figure flattery and leg-lenghtening. Now, these may not be your style goals, so we are all welcome to take these suggestions with a grain of salt. But I personally like that it gives me an Archimedean stone, so to speak, certain principles which anchor my style, which I can always go back to.

Speaking specifically to your encouraged items:

- Belts: I wear belts most often when I am wearing skirt and dresses, but I am using them less and less this year as I streamline my style.
-tucked-in tops: I only tuck in tops with skirts (and wear belts, see above), I practically never tuck into pants or jeans.
-ballet flats: I only own one (1) pair of ballet flats, which I hardly ever wear. I personally don't find them as comfy as low heel or even moderately high wedges. I think moms on the forum find them practical when running after kids, so they are very popular, but there is no particular emphasis on ballet flats as must have items.
-hosiery : I am not sure what you mean by this? Probably %99 of us go bare legged in the summer. Hosiery is a great option if you want to keep wearing dresses and skirts in the winter but not want to freeze your derriere off. But you are welcome to wear pants in the winter, which Angie herself wears more of this season.

I am sorry if I come across as a bit defensive. It was certainly not my intention. I just hope to provide some counter examples so that you can see that people like myself, who may not subscribe to any of the above mentioned rules, can still feel at home at YLF.

Just had to chime in regarding Uggs. A few years ago I was going to a ski resort and needed some new snow boots. I headed off to REI where I was sure I would find some good snow worthy options. I was aware of Uggs at the time and asked the sales person if they were a contender. His reply: "they're for young girls who sit & drink hot chocolate". My boot choice therefore was much more gnarly!! LOL

I think Uggs are fairly ugly, but isn't that in part the point? I have a pair of knock-offs that I happily wear around the house, sometimes even to the supermarket. Granted, they are usually under my bootcut jeans, and my particular pair have far more substantial soles than most of the knock-offs I see, but they are still Ugg-like in character. It weirds me out when I see girls wearing them with shorts or sundresses in the summer time, though. There also seems to be a trend for wearing them in the wrong size, so that the sole slips around to the side and you are actually walking on the side of the boot. I can't understand that at all.

They are also something of a "young" look, just like Havaina-style flip flops. When I was in my early twenties and lived in the desert, I wore flip flops all the time, as did many of my peers, and it was a cute and climate-appropriate look. I'd look kinda silly in them now, although I have no problem with more substantial or refined thong sandals.

As to the other stuff, well, to each his own. There have been a number of YLF-approved looks that don't appeal to me at all, but I don't sweat it. I'm here for guidance and ideas, not dictation and a new uniform!

I agree that there are some universally-panned items on YLF. I HAVE seen defiance of this to some success, though! It all depends on what suits YOU, your body, and style. An opinion is just an opinion, and obviously so much of great style is subjective.

I'm not sure why UGGS are so hated, either. I don't own a pair, but when I see others wear them, I just think they are an extremely casual and non-sexy alternative to other boot styles - very rustic. Are they elegant, polished, sophisticated? No. That may not be one's style goal at the time, but if it is...yes, panning is justified.

Other things are panned because they don't flatter or are bad quality, as mentioned before. That is useful education. Knits that pill quickly, blouses that yank across the bust and show everyone your bra, pants that stumpify and frumpify...I'm sure we all want to know when we're guilty of these faux pas. But simply a matter of..."Uh...I don't like the colour" or "I wouldn't wear that" have to be taken with a grain of salt. We're trying to create our own look, n'est pas? :)

P.S. I totally love silver flip flops when bumming around the tropics!

Failure, schmailure! It's all about what works for YOU, not stuffing yourself into a YLF uniform! Anything encouraged here is encouraged as a "solution," in my experience. As in, IF you are struggling with XYZ, you might try tucking, belting, etc.

FWIW, I also do not wear some YLF faves, like ballet flats, oxfords, or flat riding boots. I resisted skinnies for a long time.

I also wear/have worn some things that are not-so-favorite without being ridden out on a rail:
- baseball caps
- cap sleeve tees
- ripped, hole-filled jeans
- crocs

And RE: Uggs, I don't think anyone objects to them as cute slippers. Part of it is the over-saturation in the market, and part of it is the tendency for many people to wear them in a way that is off. Your tucked-in skinnies sound just fine... but every time I see them with mini skirts and tank tops, I feel like I'm going to have a stroke from the silliness of it all.

Hi Elisabeth, it's weird about the flip flops isn't it? I also thought anything that made the 'flip-flop' sound was a flip flop, including the gorgeous leather pretty ones but I've learned something new today about the classification! Every day's a school day as they say in my neck of the woods!

I definitely agree on the rubber ones but some of the delicate leather ones can be ultra lady-like :0)

Uggs are a bit like Marmite. Love em or hate em. (I'm glad you like yours!) Mine are full on Aussie sturdy ones that I've had re-soled and waterproofed for the UK weather (they're 6 years old now - crikey!) Maybe they're just a bit more loved over here?

Either way, choosing personal style is a bit like choosing a man. If we all had exactly the same taste there would be some very lonely (and cloned) people out there. As long as everyone can be tolerant of others choices it's all about having fun :0)

Good to hear! Thanks for chiming in, everyone. I will keep trying with belts because I like them so much, but I think I'm going to throw in the towel with tucking. There's only one outfit I have where not tucking the top sort-of works, but it just looks so much better untucked. It was my inability to tuck in particular that made me feel a bit like a "YLF failure"!

Also good to hear that flip flops are not universally vetoed. For some reason I'd got the impression that all kinds of flip flops were a no-no. I agree that rubber beach ones are only for the beach. But there are so many pretty leather ones available, and I just love the look and feel of them!

Mrs Moo, nice to know I'm not the only one who likes her Uggs. There are a lot of Ugg haters out there...I've never really understood why. I mean, you don't wear Uggs with your ladylike midi skirt, of course, but there are some ways to wear them that are just so darned cute. If I lived somewhere dry, I probably would wear them outside. :-)

ETA: Shoppingisfun -- "surrendering the waistline" means wearing something that covers up the curve between your boobs and your hips, effectively masking your waist. (At least, this is my take on what that term means). This can sometimes make a woman look more boyish, but it can be a fun look.

I feel like there are some no-no's, too, but for me that's offset by the wide variety of styles here-- which I learn so much from!
