Your comments are like therapy to me. Thanks so much ladies for your thoughts and prayers. Seth is back at school and is face is looking gorgeous again. Another few days and you wont know what happened by looking at him. He had a couple nights where he was in tears and we talked about he felt about what happened but he seems good now. I do think he has grasped just how serious it could have been and may have just grown up a tiny bit

I'm so glad Seth is OK. I am finding out that boys make quick decision based on adventure not common sense. As far as I am concern you are a wonderful Mom for thinking about and handling the social media. They get a lot of there ideas from social media and they don't need the applause when something goes wrong.
Lots of hugs!

Back 35 years ago or so, my brother and a neighbor boy, in the 13-ish age range, decided they would drop a lit match into a can of gasoline to see what would happen. The neighbor was fortunate to lose his eyebrows and eyelashes only. My brother was standing a step or two back. I'm glad Seth is fine. Really glad.

Well said "disconnect for teenage boys between 'knowing' something is not safe and 'choosing' to do it anyway". I was holding my breath while reading the story and am so relieved that the outcome is on the better end of the spectrum. I cannot imagine how you must have felt...
Wishing your boy a quick recovery.

Good heavens! I'm glad he's okay. What an accident, eh? I have 4 DDs, no sons, so I can't relate to raising boys. That said, I have some nephews and cousins that have done royally stupid things that resulted in serious injury. I hope your son recovers fast. Bless his heart.

Deborah - wow. That is so frightening. Teenage boys really do have a limited concept of consequences, more often than we think. (Says she with an eleven year old, looking down the barrel of teenage years).
I'm really this happened, but really so very glad that it wasn't as bad as it might have been. So scary.
And how proud you must be that you responded so well.
Wishing him a very swift recovery, and you too, from the fright and fear.

This story made my heart jump into my throat. I am SO glad he is relatively unscathed. I will be thinking of him and wishing him a speedy recovery.

I have two teenage boys, and I cannot express how much I can envision something like this happening. They just don't THINK before they do things sometimes, and this is NOT your fault. They do things on impulse, and that part of the brain is actually the last to mature (into their 20's). It scares me senseless that this could easily have been my boys - this and countless other "stupid" things. I'm half holding my breath until they're 30!

So glad your son is okay. I raised two boys born 20 months apart and those early teens are a challenge to get through. Come to think of it, so are the mid-teens and late teens. We had lots of near misses following really stupid actions. Looking back the best thing is that they knew Mom was always there for them.

I hope both of you recover soon.

I'm so sorry you had to go through this. It's wonderful that he's going to be OK but what a traumatic situation for all of you. It is absolutely not your fault. You cannot keep an eye on them every second. Teenagers are very impulsive and very often don't see the cause and effect of what they are doing. That's why so many parents have gray hair.

You sound like you are handling the parenting part wonderfully - not allowing him to publicize his actions is good thing. I don't know how you feel about this but it might help to offer him the possibility of counseling - sometimes kids have a delayed reaction to stressful siutations.

Through the years I have been enjoying your son's (minor, till now) antics, getting a puppy or a cat, et cetera....having one of my own, I should know how it's increasingly hard to keep them safe once they reach a certain age. But I'm sure he's learned a great lesson--at a relatively small price, considering.

What a horrible experience and what a relief that he is not worse than the unfortunate injuries he received. Until I had my son I never truly understood what people meant by "your heart walking around outside your body". Now I do. The news just makes me cry - people's sons shot in a nightclub, a toddler dragged away by an alligator at Disney. Everyone is someone's child and the heartbreak seems endless.

And teenage boys are like toddlers - they know not what they do. I have one too. I really hope you are not blaming yourself. Every time we hike I worry about bears and what to do if we run into one. Anything can happen anytime, and even the most vigilant parent can't prevent everything.

Keep us posted!

There are moments in parenting that take your breath away -- when the curtain is pulled back and you can see what might have happened.

I'm thanking God with you that your son was spared serious harm, and that you felt His clarity and presence in the midst of the crisis.

As a mom of a 14 year old boy, I well know the "disconnect" between thought and action. In so many ways, boys this age are a marvel. They have boundless energy, vitality and endurance. I understand now why boys were prized for work on farms and in apprenticeships. But cause and effect just isn't in the vocabulary yet.........
