Okay, $600 is about £400. I've been in a very similar situation before (I get a clothing allowance with my job) but the last time I really didn't have a strategy in place, didn't know what suited me and didn't know what I liked, so I wasted it on subpar so-so items that I mostly don't own any more. D'oh! When my clothing allowance rolls round again I shall be prepared :)

Now, this isn't how it'd go down in real life, as my allowance is only for clothes that I can wear whilst travelling to hot countries. But in this imaginary scenario I'd allocate the £400 as follows:

- A really good winter coat in brown or olive. Nicely nipped in at the waist and falling to about knee length. This is on my actual shopping list for the latter half of this year. My budget is £150.

- A pair of dressy winter knee high boots in brown with a small heel. £80.

- Three smart casual dresses. Up to £120 for all three.

Which leaves £50 that I'd probably spend on a couple of belts and a pair of wedge sandals for the summer.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I find the idea of spending a large amount of money on multiple cheap items a lot easier to swallow than spending the same amount of money on two or three really good quality things. Maybe I still have a poverty mentality hanging over from childhood, like it's an extravagance to spend money on quality things that last. I'm only just starting to get my head round the idea that spending money on something that'll last five years or more is a good investment. Anyway, this was a fun game!

Hmm, this is one of my favorite daydreams. Spending it on one or two designer items sounds great, but I don't think I would actually do that - too many wardrobe holes still to be filled, and too many interesting things I could buy for smaller amounts of money.

I would probably buy sandals and flats for spring, cute dresses, and fashion jewelry. Also some boyfriend jeans.

If I WERE going to buy an expensive item or two, I might go here:

http://www.katykane.com/index.htm

and get one of the less expensive items - or maybe contribute some of my own money toward something over $600.

This vintage Hermes dress would only cost $50 of my money, plus the gift:

http://www.katykane.com/s338693.htm

Specs! I just fell in love with some really pricey imported frames and after the lenses are added, they will cost nearly that amount. I keep telling DH they're like an important piece of jewelry, because you wear them every day. Have fun with your windfall!

I'm a D
so i will say because 600 is a lot of money to splurg in over prices items ...just for the sake of the name brand...i usually spend 300 0n a add on for spring ...and mid summer ...
then i likely spend againg another 300 bucks on summer, fall ... idk for and item the maximum i spend is 300 in on item but that's only if it is really worth it ... every ppl is different u know...don't ever buy with credit cards not because i can't but because i don't wanna own anybody so that's why im pretty realistic in shopping

Spend it all on one quality wool coat!

I have nothing much on my list right now, but I really could use a good winter coat. I've been looking around, and I thought $500 would be plenty, but everything I like is AT LEAST that, and often more around the $800 mark. Eep! But I just need one, and I want it to be classic and timeless. No point in buying several coats that are merely "OK" -- I want one really good one that lasts for a decade.

Appreciate your answers, ladies! So many fun ways to spend $600! I want to start planning and budgeting my wardrobe purchases more. A main motivation is so I can see the trade-offs I'm making. Sometimes I splurge in one area and then think "can't afford" in another which is actually a more crucial clothing category. I want to see the big picture better than I do. I thought it would be fun to see how you all allocate a given sum of money--tradeoffs illustrated, so to speak.

Spiffy, I forgot to put "less than one" as an option!

Yes, I like Spiffy's point about spending gifts on something special. I would go for some perfect boots, then fill out the remainder with a few smaller fun items. I suppose that's all three (a, b and c), since perfect boots are on my shopping list, but would be something amazing for a.

I like to make a point of gifts being spent on something special. My personal wardrobe is functional and my work wardrobe budget is funded so I would put the money together with what I have saved in my 'dream purse' account. On the resale market that would buy me my dream bag, a Bottega Veneta medium Veneta bag in grey or blue in great condition.

Hmmm interesting as my dad usually gives me around this amount for my bday soon. I could tell *myself* it's for clothes, and actually make a couple of investment purchases such as Hunter boots, one of those pure wants I'm having trouble justifying but the lust has been there for years. Usually there are so many things I want for myself and home that I use it to vaguely justify a bunch of smaller purchases - I'm bad at budgeting it out properly because I don't want to limit myself, but I don't end up with anything special in the end.

Probably A, but with the framework of B. I'm feeling quite critical of some things in my wardrobe that haven't been the wisest buys, and I'm trying to employ more of that PPP mindset.

Right now I am on a bit of a quest for new casual low-heeled black booties (have ordered and returned two pairs, the third attempt is on its way), and a new casual LBD, so that's where I'd probably start.

I would spend it on a great coat and some shoes or boots. And if there was some money left I'd probably put it toward my autumn (being in Australia) plans. I'd like to buy some good quality, ethically produced knitwear - to be precise, a black cardigan, a white and black turtleneck and perhaps a casual hi-low sweater, and I imagine these will be relatively pricy items (compared to my previous Ezibuy and target spending patterns)

WoW, this is a great question and a really hard one. Option A is definitely out. I bought two pair of Dicker knockoffs from Target a few years ago. One a duskier brown and the other a denim blue. My friend, who never wears shoes that she can't slip on, liked them so much she bought a blue pair. I ended up passing both along to her. I was wearing the blue pair when a little girl yanked her mom's hand and exclaimed, "She has cowgirl boots!" They were, however, supremely comfortable and practically free. Why would I want the real thing, then? Also, I don't like recognizable clothes. Some years back I had a black quilted tote with some golden metal decorative touches. Spotted it for a quarter. So useful to me that I actually wore it out. No brand name. But I hated when kids all over the neighborhood would yell at me designer names. Kids! And I live in an urban ghetto.

Generally, despite continual acquisition and purging (and spending very little), I am pretty happy with my clothes at any point in time. I also feel like I have Enough for most purposes and am aware that too much choice just promotes indecision and confusion.
When I had a lot more clothes, I had so many great options that it took me over an hour standing in front of my closet trying to identify the better choice. Now I can get dressed in ten minutes. I've come to think of new items added as I Want a New Toy. If you get too many at once, you forget to play with some of them.

Occasionally I will really long for a long gone item and wish I had it again. I would fantasize how wonderful it would be to have a personal shopper who would fetch me a duplicate or arrange to have an exact copy made. Kind of like Hollywood wardrobe department. But I realize that I am not my inner teenager and definitely not built like her.
If I had whatever item it was, it wouldn't have the same effect because wouldn't fit the same way.

So I guess I would spend to have the next items I've identified that I want, without having to wait to discover them or find a good sale. I'd like a few winter weight, sleeved dresses in luscious colors. Not a little black dress kind of gal, even though I love black. I like to stand out. I would be happy to have them all the same. Recently saw such a sheath dress - onlly defect was a plunging vertical slit - with a front pocket! Know immediately that this was my next goal. Hand in pocket in a dress that could be worn for cocktails. Yes! That's 100% me and I'm shocked I never thought of it. So could have something made or just a pocket added.

d: pay off my Visa which I already used to buy clothes with? LOL.
I would certainly splurge on accessories, a nice purse like Caro, lovely tights or patterned nylons, gloves, a new scarf.

I think A: New shoes for spring/summer and an evening bag or clutch, which I don't have (not necessarily meant to match each other). Could you send me the address to that person, please?

It depends how complete and functional your wardrobe is now. If it's in good shape then I would use the money for something special or a bigger ticket item, like a great coat. The dickers you posted would be a hot contender to me. If you need to flush out your basics, I would work off a list of needs.

As I've already budgeted for what I need, replacements & a couple of updates I would put towards something totally fun. Probably a bag or (another) leather jacket.

I think I would start on my next season wishlist and see how far that took me. I would definitely look at being less and good quality.

For me, a and c. A big investment purchase (bag, boots, coat, leather jacket, whatever) plus some inexpensive, trendy things to keep me happy through the season. Of course your idea of an investment may be different than mine.
