Another plug for the Maeve "The Colette" at Anthropologie. I bought a black pair and a gold pair in the linen blend last summer, and they have been great! So comfortable and forgiving, but look very polished and current. The waist is quite high on me (I'm a little short waisted), so I don't tuck in tops, but they work great with cropped sweaters!

I second Jonesy and Suz on J.Crew, COS, Madewell and Club Monaco pants! I have pants and jeans from those retailers - winners.

Julie, high five I have The Colette in orange pleather and white denim. Love!

Kyle, Liverpool pants and jeans have been excellent on clients who seek EXTRA comfort on the midsection.

Please show us the cream Everlane janes that hubs likes!

Here are my pants. I'm dressy, so maybe not your cuppa! But for completeness sake, I also do well with pants from Hugo Boss, Theory, Elie Tahari, Veronica Beard, Tory Burch, Boden, Armani, Polo Ralph Lauren, and 3.1. Phillip Lim.

For jeans, I tend to do well with Frame, G-Star, Ganni, Madewell, COS, Everlane, Madewell, Maeve, Pilcro, Jonathan Simkai, and occasionally KUT and Banana Republic.

Happy shopping!

I will make a pitch for COS, J. Crew, and Madewell--each of these retailers carries tailored pants and jeans in a variety of silhouettes with half-elasticated waistbands, so they look polished, but are comfy and can accommodate slight shifts in body shape.

I just ordered a pair of the Colettes in a ponte, as I am always apprehensive about linen and could not discern from the website how much linen was actually in the pants. I also have about four pairs of jeans in my Nordstrom cart and still need to look at some of these other suggestions, as well as J. Crew, which used to work quite well for me. On top of all that, I’ll head to the mall this weekend to try some things in person. Better give my husband a heads up about our next credit card statement, lol.

A further note on those Club Monaco pants -- they have a very large seam allowance so although they are billed as crops (and would be on a tall person like you) they also have the potential to become full length if that were. your preference. Being short, I had to have them cropped further, LOL.

I second Angie's suggestion of the Colette pants- they are high rise (which I like) and super amazingly comfortable and flattering. I have a black cotton -linen blend pair that would be very cruise-appropriate I think. I considered going for a wintery corduroy or ponte pair too.

Hi Kyle I also faced the issue of weight loss, mine has been 12 kg which is similar to your 25 pounds. I mostly like elastic waist pants and even some of those had to go, though I am amazed how many fit both before and after!
My brands will be no use to you as NZ or Australian brands. I have winnowed down to 6 pair “summer” pants ( plus 2 pair shorts) and 7 pair “autumn/winter/spring” pants. Only 2 pairs have zips, one is white jeans one is black dress pants, and both of them are a bit loose such that they need to be covered by a top. Only 2 of my summer pairs are cropped and the rest of my 13 pair pants are full length- of which 4 had to be hemmed, 3 by me and 1 professionally. I do so love it if they don’t need hemming!
All this really to say, that 13 pair actually seems plenty. Am sure I used to have more. And I wear pants far more than dresses or skirts.

@ Kyle - I have 11 pair of pants/jeans, and only 2 of them are long enough. In other words ‘not flood’. Most are cropped - and a little shorter on me than ‘regular’ folks. I roll the cuffs of my ‘flood’ jeans. Wide cuffs are trending ATM, so why not experiment with styling those Everlane jeans?

You all are the best. THE BEST. Thank you for providing me so many ideas, options and solutions. I’m reading and re-reading your comments and making a list of things I’m going to try, including the Colette, Emerson, Liverpool, Ann Taylor, and several others. I will keep adding and trying as more comments come in.

I have a love-hate relationship with stretch jeans. I find non-stretch less comfy, but more substantial, so they compress what I want to compress more, if that makes sense. Stretch jean fabric is usually thinner and I find they can sometimes highlight lumps and bumps I don’t care to showcase. This is especially true for white jeans, I find. I like some mid-rise and some high rise, but not super high.

I ordered a pair of Everlane Original Cheeky jeans in cream. I love the color, they are non-stretch, and flattering through the tummy and hip area. They are straight, not tapered, and I find that awkward, especially because I feel like they are just too short and wide. My husband loved them, though, so I kept them and force myself to wear them now and then. If only they came in a tall.

I forgot that I also have a pair of black Athleta tall slit hem boot cut Interstellar Tight pants. They are flat front, side zip and very flattering. I guess I think of them as athleisure due to the distinctive fabric (like a scuba, kind of) but maybe they could be dressed up?

I have my eye on a new cargo pant with a cool banded bottom from Athleta but it doesn’t ship until late March ( what ? I want it now , lol) . Old Navy’s pixie pants are good little inexpensive pieces in a few diff styles ( they’re all in ponte ) . Faux leathers are from RW& Co , Club Monaco , H& M and I can’t remember where else . I prefer pull on styles with a clean front .

I’ll put a plug in for Athleta, they have great styles that IMO can be dressed up or down, they are wash and wear. On line they offer a tall
I find The Gap a great place to find current jeans with out having to spend a lot.
And like Lisa love my “leather’ pants, these joggers in particular, dress up/dress down and easy peasy to care for

jeans and pants are very tough for me too! I understand. I love my Mother Fray weekend jeans - pricey, but, they work. I also love my WHBM girlfriend jeans - just be sure to size down one or two sizes - the darker wash seem to stretch out faster than lighter wash imho.

the citizens of humanity Emerson - size down - they fit like a gem! can wear multiple times without bagging out.

my fave white jeans are out from cloth crops.

I'm back!

The jeans and pants trends are:

Relaxed Straight

Cargo (Utility)

Bootcuts and Flares

Barrel, Balloon and Lantern (Carrot is in the same category)

Wide Leg and Wide Crop

Cuffed Hem

Boyfriend and Girlfriend

Slit Hem

Qualifiers per trend that vary greatly:

rise: low, mid or high (half and full elastic too)

length: all sorts of full lengths AND all sorts of cropped lengths

fit: tailored, fluid, or slouchy

wash: light or dark

colour, fabric or pattern: infinite!

stretch: some or none

My suggestion is that you figure out your rise length sweet spot, and your length sweet spot. And do you need stretch?

If you were shopping with me, Kyle, we'd be trying:

wide crops and wide legs

relaxed straights

cuffed hem

bootcuts

Have you tried Maeve "The Colette" at Anthropologie? It comes in denim, ponte, linen, faux leather, and corduroy across colours and patterns:

I don’t have a lot of waist definition (30 waist, 38 hips) and a similar lower belly pouch under the belly button. (I’m 62, too!). Also, I need at least 34 inseam but prefer longer. For jeans flattery at a comfortable for me price point, I like Levis’ high rise cuts. For twice the cost Mother jeans are very flattering with a particularly nice rear view (genius cut and good pocket placement!)

There is a style of pant I find works really well for comfort and appearance: flat front waist band (no zipper) and elastic back. The flat front without added bulk smooths over the tummy, whilst the elastic waist provides some ease and a bit of flexibility with regards to size. When I’m feeling confident I tuck and when I’m not I wear the top untucked.

Since I'm short, and slightly short-legged (even for my own height), what works for me would likely be the reverse of what works for you. BUT for a straightforward, easy mid-rise ponte pant, don't neglect Liverpool. I got the plaid pant that matches a jacket. but they come in many other colours. SIZE DOWN. They're more than generous.

For a modified wide leg (wide but not too wide) I got these cropped ones from Club Monaco. Lovely quality. Here, you might need to size up for waist measurement. They have other styles of pant, too, and the quality tends to be high.

Those are my most recent purchases. But I'm also on the hunt for new ones in barrel or balloon shapes.

The jeans are Long though- I think 34 inch inseam. I had to get them hemmed.
But pull on boot cut jeans were a long time HEWI. Plus they're a bit towards the teal, which I prefer.

Jessikams, yes to comfort! I hear you loud and clear. I think ponte pants can be really great for that reason. And if I can find something I love, I will for sure buy multiples as you suggest.

I’ve decided not to put up with pants that are too stiff or unforgiving. My weight fluctuates a lot, particularly around my belly, and my pants are just going to have to deal with it! Fortunately, loose pants are in style right now anyway.

I love any kind of carrot or barrel cut pant. It works great for my body type. I hope you can find a “cut” or style that works for you, and then just stick to that style in different colors or fabrications.

Lisa, it’s nice to know I’m not alone, so thank you! I like ponte kick flares, and had never considered faux leather. Anything specific you think I should try in either category?

I have similar body issues as you , and similar experience w retiring , lifestyle changes etc . I also have tried on and bought every single version of black pants that exist ( because I need them for my job now ) and still go back to Lululemon joggers and wide leg pants , and ponte kick flares or wide legs from places like ON , Gap etc. I have several pair of black pants from Aritizia that I still wear but they don’t feel interesting or current anymore . Cropped straight legs feel unfashionable to me -which is what the aritizia’s are . I’m on the hunt for the perfect fluid trouser - no stiff fabrics . Lots of length and movement . I wear black jeans too - mine are from Massimo D , Gap and ON . I don’t know if I’ve answered your question though - lol

These are some of my newer and trendier pants, though I also wear ponte pants a lot.
The jeans, black wide legs, and floral pants are all boutique finds, and the pleather was from BR last year.

I have tried on so many pants and jeans recently and haven’t bought a thing, So I’d like to know what your most flattering pants and jeans are.

Background: After retiring I did a big closet purge. Many things were too small after a weight gain and not right for my casual lifestyle. I was left with two pairs of blue jeans (now too big) way too many leggings, at-home joggers, and no regular pants or trousers.

Now, after a 25-pound weight loss, my wish list is one pair of blue jeans, one pair of white jeans, and two pairs of pants (one all-purpose black). I’d like to take the white jeans and black pants on a Caribbean cruise we are reluctantly doing with my siblings in March. Think I’ll wear them with dressy tops and sandals at night.

I’m struggling because I’m picky and self-critical, which I’m working on. My body has also changed with age and after the weight gain. I have no waist, and am self-conscious about my lower belly between the belly button and basically where my legs begin. It’s my most challenging area to fit and flatter. I am tall, with long legs, but can sometimes wear regular sizes, depending. I prefer a more fitted and tailored look — still adjusting to wider legs.

So, back to my question: what are your most flattering jeans and pants, or what might you recommend I try next? (Will also check out the relevant link in today’s blog!)
