Yes, SF -- it becomes a real mishmash of make do at a certain point. I didn't want to invest to dress a weight that was so unhealthy for me. Your description of "the way down" is what I'm experiencing now -- well said. First it fits a bit better. Then it actually FITS. Then it fits loose. I've been wearing jeans at my desk -- with a belt -- all day and not feeling a twinge of "ohmygodican'twaittogetoutofthesedamnthings"!

I predict that black bottoms will always have a place in my closet, but I hope entertain myself with a bit more colour variety overall. I see my "not so distant" retirement wardrobe having a lot of jeans --blue, white, cream, black, some black pants -- ponte pants, wide leg flowy pants that I can dress up, a couple of summer pair like m current fave culottes. But in with that I hope to see tan, brown, gray. And tops with a bit more variety -- although I could probably live quite comfortably with ja whole bunch of black turtlenecks and white t-shirts. :-)

Have you arrived at your destination now?

Sheesh!

I can so relate to this: “I really didn't buy a lot new at the upper reaches of my weight -- I just strained the limits of what I had.” I did buy one round of “fat clothes”, but still wore some of my other stuff. On the way down, I’ve had the experience of something finally fitting me, then fitting “for real” a bit later, and yet later finding it fits me in yet another way. I think I didn’t realize how much I was stretching things in part because I was so squishy it was hard to get solid numbers.

I’ll be interested to see how much you want to move away from the black bottoms, or if you decide they’re “really you” at whatever size.

LOL -- I know, Jenni! It's crazy. The main point is that as my weight crept up, my closet devolved to a sea of black - not that I don't like or want black, but that was all I felt I could wear, and THAT was a problem, When I decide my wardrobe had gotten too limited, I started to buy anything black that fit as long as it it had a little detail or feature that I thought might at least give me some variety. Anyway, I did consider adding a brand name column but decided this will do for now. I'm optimistic that most of these will be ready to donate by spring and I can start fresh. One of my winter projects will be to establish a list of my essentials and keep THAT with me as a reminder when I shop!

I’m amused by the trying to document what you have getting boring fast!
Perhaps list by brand name also?
I just wonder if taking the list along if you ever can get to a physical store, or having it next to you when on the computer, would help temper the desire to purchase another black bottom

CarolS, I can't high five you on anything solid black because personally, I don't wear it :)

But! I have clients in your position and it can make a lot of sense. Especially when many of the black bottoms are wardrobe essentials. So if a large black pants capsule works for you and your style - that's a good thing!

That said, if you're looking to phase some of it out and add alternatives, that's a fun project too! It took me years to deliberately phase out all the black in my wardrobe, and I enjoyed the process. Relax into it, and create a list of the types of bottoms you want to wear next.

Thanks so much for 'normalizing' my obsession with black pants, all!!! I really do love and need them, but there's almost nothing in that closet that is NOT black -- so that has to be brought into some kind of balance. Eventually. :-)

Irina -- I do like wearing black bottoms, but counting gear and summer capris, my total count is probably 25+, which just seems silly.

I was going to delegate some of the more worn ones to "gardening and chores", but maybe I should cull some of them now. My goal is to wear the heck out of them this fall and winter and start fresh once my weight is a bit more stable -- hopefully by spring. At that point I hope to carefully add a reasonable mix of black pants with other colours!

Jenni --I have seen you talk about how you track your wears and I'm in awe of your analytical approach! I don't know if I could maintain that level of discipline, but I AM trying to get at least a bit more tuned in to what I have.

I started to document what I have, which got boring pretty fast ("pants, black"....) BUT it did help to really illustrate the fact that I am conducting a one-note symphony!

Lozz -- yes, a short term no buy rule for sure, followed by mindful replacement. Def not one in one out given the current count, though! I'll aim for a smaller total number in the future. This is also in part because I'd buy new as my weight crept up, while keeping older ones hoping to be able to wear them again. Now there's a glut!

Sal -- thank you! I like black pants too (in case there was any doubt!). I'm looking forward to them eventually having a place in my wardrobe without being quite so predominant! ETA -- and yes re the length of top. I'm still happiest with a lightweight banded bottom sweatshirt - they tend to hit right about where I want them to hit and they stand out from the body just enough to camouflage the fluff..,

Very, very relatable. I have just been going through my jackets and I have too many black blazers. Mind you I wear them casually - there are very few situations in Israel that require a blazer. But still, long, short, boxy, fitted what to do? Anyway, I also have too many black bottoms but am not reviewing them right now.
I think it is wise to wait for your weight to settle. Indeed, fit challenges come in all sizes.

I think your plan is wise re not overspending during this transition period whilst working from home. And black pants are hard to avoid - I have them too:). And I like them.

I works experiment with them - which ones work and which don’t. Move the ones that really don’t along.

Tops that sit just over the waist are very useful - avoiding tucking but giving shape. Welted tops or asymmetric, something like this could be a great addition.

Yep, I know exactly how this feels. It’s a useful thing to write down and acknowledge the black predominance in your wardrobe. Maybe the next step is to implement the ‘do not buy more’ rule.
Maybe a one in one out rule could work too!
I have made an effort to limit the addition of more black by substituting with my best dark and not so dark blues , and other saturated colours. Also heaps of white (tops and bottoms).

I guess I have a success story? I must be boring the forum by saying it’s about lists and trying to even up wears.
I own 13 pairs autumn/winter/spring pants, all bar two now worn over 30 times, one worn 24 times, and the $7 thrifted leggings not yet worn- they may be a mistake but I can always donate them back.
And I have 4 pairs summer pants, 3 of which have over 30 wears and one bought December 2020 has 19 wears last summer. There is also one pair summer pants in my newish “holding zone”, I may be sick of them, they are from 2012 and have had 60 wears. I thought I would see if I miss them in our upcoming summer. I try to think really hard before I buy anything new.
Like you, with my weight loss of 9 kg (slow, over more than 2 years), most of my clothes still fit due to elastic waists and Lycra. (I buy those because I find them most comfortable and I hardly ever tuck).
Overall I have been happy with this approach. With my tops, I am beginning to be tired of some but feel OK about possibly doing a big edit end of this year or early next because I will only be editing out ones with plenty of wears and intend a smaller wardrobe going forward. Was aiming for 150 wardrobe items and am at 159 currently with additional 10 in holding zone and extra sentimental and dress-up which are not counted. This is a massive improvement over 5 years ago.

Black bottoms are essential to my wardrobe.
Here is my list:
wide leg silk
jogger silk
tropical wool cropped
tropical wool straight full length
mixed fibers joggers
wool pinstripe cropped
straight jeans
barrel leg jeans
And I’m looking for a pair of linen ones But I understand. I tend to overbuy sweaters and they are on my no buy list. Just took back a really nice one. Felt sad.

Katerina -- I know exactly what you mean -- even on a trip to return a few impulse purchases today I had to fight against trying on just one more black or black dominant pair of pants that appealed to me. But. like you, trying for a no buy mandate - at least for a while.

Carla -- I should count the total number of black/black dominant items.I think I'm at 25 with bottoms alone. Tops are probably similar. Multiple black and black patterned turtlenecks, t-shirts, tank tops, cardigans, tunics... Oy. I really do need to hold on through winter and see where I emerge in the spring!

Carol, I hear you! I have many, many black pants. Countless really. Now, I have black pants on my no buy list - an imaginary one, lol! In principle, I am glad I have a lot of black bottoms to choose from because black is the neutral I like to wear and wear the most. I have a variety of silhouettes and textures - velvet, woven wool, satin, leather, knitted, jeans, chinos etc. But if there are too many at some point - time to stop getting new ones for a while. For me, the problem has been that I have had a fixed idea that one should never miss the opportunity to buy “the perfect pair of black pants”, IYKWIM. So I have collected a lot.

Thanks, Minaminu -- glad to know I'm not alone in the challenge to break away from darks!

Janet -- thank you! I do feel better Thinking back to when I was MUCH smaller (going back close to 15 years now!), you're right, I was drawn to trimmer fits. I was also working in an office environment where trim little blazers were the perfect thing with wide trousers and pointy boots. Sigh. Okay, no looking back. But, I take the point you and others are making here that my preferences could change.

There was a line in one of Toban's posts about dressing during weight loss that resonated with me, and it was something to the effect that fit challenges don't disappear just because you lose weight. I carry a lot of my weight around the middle and I have work to do to tighten up that midsection a bit. So blousy helps camouflage "fluffy". More patterns to break or at least consider as I move ahead.

BUT, I'm hearing enough of this theme that I will definitely revisit what I am doing with a couple of those new sweaters. Maybe I will be happier to return a couple now and enjoy choosing something I love even more in the future.

I so appreciate all this insight!!

Ha! I am with you on the black pants. I have 3-4 pairs of ponte pants, 3 pairs of leggings, and black jeans all in 3 different size ranges due to weight gain over the past several years. I am also on my way back down so I am glad to have keep them. I pretty much just wear black or dark wash jeans on the bottom in fall winter so your numbers seem quite reasonable to me. It keeps it simple! I am pear shape so like to de-emphasize my bottom half. I do branch out a little in spring/summer with cognac and olive pants! I am also a big fan of oversized tops with slim pants or legging esp for at home wear- comfort reigns.

I know a little bit about this issue. But I am happy with a selection of black bottoms. Currently, I have in my black bottom category:

- two pairs of summer crops in totally different fabrications, one cotton utility style and one Athleta Brooklyn cut,
- two jeans — one straight, one bootcut
- one pair of slightly dressier trousers with a red and blue side stripe, so limited styling for those
- one pair of slightly dressier wide leg ponte-ish fabric that I need to try on and evaluate since I haven’t worn them in two years
- three midi skirts in varying styles and fabrications

Plus nearly all of my exercise gear bottoms are black. If all that makes you feel a bit better!

But yeah, it’s a easy rut to fall into (especially for someone who carries more weight below the waist, as I do). Being aware of it is half the solution!

The joggers sound like a good solution to switch things up a bit without spending a lot for now. As you settle into your new size, you’ll likely get a better idea of what you are in the mood to wear. I’d caution against investing too heavily in more roomy tops right now.
When I lost a size or two a million years ago (ok, only ten, but still…), I was drawn to closer fits. YMMV of course!

Over the last few years, I have been working hard to replace my dark pieces and add a more balanced approach to my wardrobe. It's hard work, partly because shops seems to sells tons of black and dark pieces but also because I was stuck in a root.

Hope it goes well with your new approach!

Good question, Star. I have a pretty high tolerance for oversized sweaters and some of the new ones I have feel on the lower end of oversized right now (leaving room to enjoy more slouch in future). But I think that is what I have consider -- how much is TOO much? Thank you!

Thanks, Lisa! Yes, black will always be ubiquitous for us, but this is getting crazy. I do have one or two pairs of blue jeans (getting pretty baggy, but I'm ok with that for now and trying to avoid buying jeans just yet.) I'd like to treat myself to new jeans when I'm closer to the goal. For now, I just don't need to add anything from a function perspective! I also have white cropped jeans and a pair of tan pants that almost fit again. Oh, and a pair of olive ponte pants that should do for most of the fall and winter. It just seems silly to buy new bottoms at all right now! The only other exception to that would be if I find a non-black pant suit or pseudo pant suit to wear for my nephew's upcoming wedding. That I might allow. MIGHT.

Good point about reconsidering the oversized sweaters. This has been a look I embraced even in my very thin days, but it will be a good idea to stay open to other looks. Will have to get busy at reh-fit and tighten up some spongy abs!

Thank you, slim cat. I always wind up with black outerwear, too, and would love to join you in breaking that cycle!

You do have a good stock of black bottoms :) If you are still in the weight loss phase is adding oversized tops a good idea? Once you have reached where you are going they will be too big, no?

I used to have a lot of black pieces in my wardrobe, then got rid of most of it. Started dressier job with pandemic incoming and black came back to my closet .
The one thing I did succeed though - no more black outwear - horrible next to my face ( scarfs aren't enough to justify it ).
I think you did great job with analyzing the state of your wardrobe and the needs for the future. I applaud your restrain in shopping ( and returning some additions ) - well done! Here's to the brighter future and more fun shopping.

First of all, what we write always seems far longer than it actually takes to read. This was not a long ramble Secondly - I hear ya, sister. Living as close to you as I do, I can relate to the black bottom issue - regardless of my job requirements, I'd still have likely the same number of ponte pants, joggers etc as you. It is really boring, sobering and depressing , isn't it?

I think the camo joggers are a great addition for you. What about jeans? Cords? Those would be easy to add in without breaking the bank and might break up all the black in your closet. Or am I missing the point here? (I often do here on the forum, lol). Maybe the oversized tops look could use some consideration : do you really want to add more of the same look? Do you have shorter/more cropped cardigans or jackets? Hoodies (nicer ones ) to wear with the black ponte pants and sneakers? Now I'm the one who is rambling .......

Warning -- navel gazing ahead: I've decided for a few reasons that I will "make do" with a lot of what's in my closet for this fall and winter.

For one, I'm losing weight, so would rather hold off and make purchases I love when I see where my weight settles. Since I'm still WFH, there's very little external pressure to conform to any kind of dress code. Additionally, (and perhaps a bit sadly, although I assure you this is NOT a pity party) I can still get away with a lot of what's in my closet. This is in part due to the magic of lycra, and the fact that I really didn't buy a lot new at the upper reaches of my weight -- I just strained the limits of what I had.

I knew I had been hiding behind a LOT of black in recent years, but as I've gone through my closet lately, the reality of just how many black pants/leggings/skirts I own has been a bit sobering. For your amusement, here's a very rough estimation of what I found:

4-5 pairs of skinny ponte pants (a winter staple around here, but sheesh!)

3 pairs of dressier wide leg pants (different styles and fabrications, but again, sheesh!)

misc. gear -- at least 4 leggings, a pair of knit joggers, and a newly discovered pair of lululemon pants found in the bottom of a forgotten bag from my late MIL's closet.

1 pr black jeans

1 pair black cotton slim cropped Gap pants

several pairs of black capris

1 pair of black culottes

2 black and white culottes

black and white striped wide leg pants,

2 black tube skirts, two black and white tube skirts and one black and burgundy tube skirt

GAH.

A recent flurry of "hey, stuff fits me now" shopping, shows how deeply rooted this BLACK pattern has become! In recent weeks I brought home a pair of black velour wide leg pants (cozy, had pockets, not too long, loved em. Took 'em back) and a pair of black joggers (um, also going back!!) and a black midi skirt (keeping because it fills a gap and I think has some longevity.)

I think black pants and skirts will always have a place in my closet, but this has been a sobering reminder that I probably don't need to add any more of them until my weight stabilizes!

I have so far allowed myself one new pant for early fall -- a pair of camo joggers. Not needed in any real sense, but they do give me a taste of novelty. Although they will work with the long list of black knit tops in my closet (I'll spare you the list, but it is similar to the pants list!), they are more olive than anything, so, I'll call that a win.

I've also added some new sweaters that will help perk up all those black pants, but am still deciding whether any should go back. I like oversized tops, so I think I can justify keeping most of them as part of my 'future' wardrobe.

They say confession is good for the soul. Here's hoping that "confessing" my darkest secrets here (pun intended) will help break that "default to black' pattern!

If you made it this far, thank you for bearing with me as I rambled. Anybody else have a pattern they're trying to break?! Or a success story about moving past one?
