I use my lookfab blog mostly for myself! I only post my WIWs, and then maybe a select thread here or there. Now I can easily look back at my WIWs and think about my style progress.

If someone else were to look at my blog, I would be thrilled!

Deborah, while I reiterate it's up the individual to decide what level of control over their info (and others' responses to that) they can deal with, I encourage people not to be naive about the public nature of the internet. For example, I was reading a men's style forum recently (found it via Google) and part of a thread linked to a woman on Chictopia whose outfits they thought were nuts. There was a lot of laughter about how crazy this chick was.

And that was actually pretty polite compared to some stuff I've seen. Now imagine if they thought it was funny enough to leave trolling comments on her blog and get all their mates to join in (I've seen this happen elsewhere).

Then there's the whole issue of future employers looking you up; dealing with other future relationships; your kids getting older and potentially seeing what you posted 10 years ago; as well as the aforementioned issues of a friend or Mum seeing your stuff. Most people aren't bothered by these issues, in a why worry when it hasn't happened way, but I am quite sensitive and knowing I would find it hard to deal with emotionally should it arise, I would rather take precautions. The ultimate precaution would be to not participate in online communities, but I enjoy them a lot, so I have to find a compromise that works for me.

Fruitful this is interesting. Clearly I should think more about the implications of private info going out over the net. I am too trusting.

I also don't have the expectation that anyone 'random' would be looking at my blog. My intent is not to be a 'blogger' just to document my outfits and maybe just have some fun dabbling in the idea of blogging.

I might also ask Greg about editing old posts, as I tend to ramble on and perhaps editing to create more concise posts could be an idea.

Natalie, that's really helpful to know it might be possible to edit old posts by adding them to the blog; it definitely makes me feel less stressed. I hope I don't come across as judging the personal elements of your posts; it is up to each person what they're comfortable with. You are correct that the forum is public anyway; I just felt that the blog feature sort of draws a bit more attention to individuals.

Deborah and Natalie, thanks for saying you haven't noticed me posting inappropriate stuff I guess it is the feeling of knowing I've said things that in a different light I might not want someone to read, but also knowing I won't remember everything I've posted on every corner of the internet. It's things like a throwaway comment about how a friend IRL annoyed me, or worse, maybe I called them unstylish!?! I don't even remember! And me throwing virtual tantrums about things like glasses - how embarrassing in hindsight!

I absolutely love sharing myself with the members on this site, but have that caution about that hindsight regret.

Modgrl, I'm sorry about Realtime not working. I saw Deborah has a realtime category on her blog so maybe there's a way?

Ana, I share your desire to make the blog look nice as possible, so would do the same and just put favourite posts on there. You are right that most people wouldn't search back through every post. I'm very curious myself though, so I know how easy it is to get a mental picture of a person by spending a while going back through their internet activity. While I regard my behaviour as benign I can see where it wouldn't be. (Plus my Mum read my diary as a teenager. Come to think of it, so did my ex-boyfriend! Both times blew up in my face, so I have baggage when it comes to prying even when not that likely).

Diana, Kiwichik, Modgrl, it's helpful to know you're using Members Only - I couldn't tell and thought I was odd there. I might go for Members Only for now and if I want to open it up for other friends (like Natalie sharing with her MommyBoard), I'll talk to Greg about editing old posts.

Really helpful info ladies xxoo

I set mine to members only for now, and am only planning on posting my wiw posts to it.

ETA: I mostly want to use it as a compendium/database of my outfits, for myself and other members here (so you could see all my outfits at once) and I'm not particularly interested at the moment in getting outside viewers, etc, or even really building a "fashion blog" outside of my regular YLF posts.

I only post my WIW posts to my blog. It's kind of like an archive where I (or anyone else who is interested) will be able to see my outfits all together in one place. I also add any shopping/strategy posts that people say they found particularly helpful. I don't add every post I make on the forum to my YLF blog, because I want my YLF blog to look really nice and only contain my very best posts (if that makes sense).

You don't have to add every forum post you make to your blog, and I doubt very many people will search back through ALL of your forum posts. They wouldn't easily be able to do that from your blog anyway. They will need to go to your profile for that and filter the results. You can also name your blog something different than your username. That's what I did.

I set mine up but it seems that real time/iPhone app posts do not show up on the blog. Ultimately that is going to limit the usability for me. I take pictures and post with my iPhone and may only get a few minutes at night on an actual computer.

I have it set up for members only now until I figure it out. After a time if I start to use it more I will open it.

Fruitful, I agree with Deborah--I don't remember you ever posting anything inappropriate. I guess I am the poster child for oversharing though--I've got pics of my kids up, I talk about struggles with shopping and with DH not liking some of my outfits, etc. At first when I set up the blog I was trying to hide all the kid pics and make the blog posts members only, but then it got to be too much work and the kids are a big part of who I am so it's really hard to separate out that side of me. Some of the moms in my mommy board follow my blog so I decided to make the blog public. Plus anyone can read the forum so it's not like the blog is any different really. I just use my blog as a way to quickly have access to my old posts and outfit pics, kind of like an outfit archive.

But it sounds like there are a lot of options for different levels of privacy to suit everyone's tastes. You can make the blog members only and you can select which of your posts go onto the blog (not all of them have to, only the ones you select). Plus when I started the blog I gained the ability to edit old posts even more than 24 hours old (you can ask Greg about that), so that I could put all my old posts onto the blog. So you could potentially edit out parts of old posts if you wanted to. Or you could hide (or even delete) old pics.

In your case, I would just start out by making the blog members only and selecting only the few posts that you feel are appropriate for the blog. Whatever makes you feel comfortable!

Well I've just set up my blog and am restricting it to members only however I realise thAt anyone can look at my posts in the YLF Forum it does take a bit of effort. I will also ve careful how much personal information I share.

I suppose I am not really expecting anyone but my YLF friends and my real life girl friends to look at my posts so I haven't really thought about the privacy issue to much.

Thinking of your posts in the past, I can't recall you every posting anything that's not suitable for public consumption but then that may not be the point.

I will be interested to hear what others say as thinking about these sorts of things does my head in... its one of the reasons I am not a very active facebook user.

I want to start one. But am debating how to manage my privacy.

I have posted some nutty, personal stuff under this ID lol. I only recently realised we can't edit old posts or I might have thought twice about that. When random people browse the lookfab.com main page, once they click on a post, they can then click onto the forum version, and can then browse/search our forum posts. I want to avoid this (however minimal the likelihood) because of my aforementioned occasional oversharing.

Options:
1) set it to Members Only view (good solution, but down the track I might want to make it public - then all the old stuff will be too)
2) request certain old posts be deleted - don't know if this is possible
3) create a separate ID and try to appear normal on it; leave the crazy on this one lol!

Any thoughts? (posting and running)
