I was church pianist for decades. While this sort of thing never happened to me, I can imagine how I'd feel if it did. I have performed pieces that took me months to learn (one took me a full year to polish), so I would be very disappointed if I performed and didn't have the audience's attention. One thing that baffled me was when people thought God had zapped me with talent, and didn't comprehend how many hours I spent practicing and perfecting the pieces I played for church (and weddings, and competitions, and...). It didn't bother me, but it did astound me. At least they appreciated and loved the pieces I performed, and that made it all worth it. I don't know what advice to give you except to try not to let it bother you.
