Sigh. I know this too well. In the church in which I grew up, which has a glorious organ, and a service that blends traditional and contemporary, they moved the announcements to before the prelude. This served two purposes. It gave the congregation a space to pray and cease chatting, creating a musical transition of sorts, and it honored the gift of the organist.

Texstyle is right --- I think the audience might enjoy it if the organist introduced her self, and her piece, before slipping onto the bench. Organ is unusual, in that the performer is often hidden from view. Trust me --- singer's demand a spotlight! Alternatively, the choir could have filed in and sat as part of the audience, or up front, during your piece. Essentially, the rest of the musicians model behavior for the audience -- I've seen this done successfully in the past.

I'm glad you get to play again, and I hope you can find a way to kindly, but frankly, share your disappointment with the concert organizers, so they can brainstorm ways to encourage the audience to fully engage with all the music in the program. I routinely program an instrumental piece or two during my vocal recitals. It gives me a break, and gives my audience a break from, well, me. I think it is enriching and relaxing to explore music without words for a few moments in the midst of a vocal/choral concert crammed full of poetry and words.

I am really sorry and disappointed for you. I hope next time a proper introduction will change things.
Isabel, my prof in high school (the One who sparked my love for theatre) tried to teach us to respect the artist and the hard work that goes on before the performance. This translates in shutting up, dressing up and be generous with our hand clapping at the end, as a thank you to the artist.

I'm so sorry you had that experience - particularly after all your hard work. It does sound like the audience just didn't realize that the performance was resuming and thought it was background music. So frustrating for you. Your solution to have someone make an announcement next time should prevent this from happening again.

I am so sorry. What a brilliant idea Texasstyle has.

I just want to say that I think one of the things that we are losing as a society, is the ability to respect something that is important to someone else and not necessarily ourselves. It is like the person that talks on their cell phone during a performance and many other things.

I recently read that "trust" is the feeling that if something is important to you , it will also be to the people with whom you share it with. In this case , your music. : ( When they show no appreciation for it, you lose trust. Yet being part of a church group, calls on us to trust again. With a little help from an announcement. : )

Ugh. That's so depressing! I was a music major in college, and although I never had something happen like this, I can imagine how awful it would feel. Some people have so little respect for musicians! They have no idea how much work they do to to get a piece ready for performance. Grr.

So sorry this happened, it must have been incredibly frustrating. But okay, I'm a solutions oriented person so I say Don't let this happen again - next time, get up and address the audience verbally yourself - and say something like "Excuse me, excuse me everyone (clap if you have to to get their attention) - I would like to introduce myself and a special piece I'm going to play for you..."

I mean hey, if you're going to do the work and effort, you deserve to get attention, right?

Thanks very much, everyone. After a few hours' sleep, a walk/talk with a dear friend, and reading your supportive responses, I'm feeling less upset about what happened.

I'll definitely make sure that situation never happens again by having an MC announce the second (or whichever) part of the concert. And yes, Angie, I will play the piece at my church...and other times.

Laurinda--you get a pass from me! :)

Oh wow, I'm so sorry. I was church pianist for decades. While this sort of thing never happened to me, I can imagine how I'd feel if it did. I have performed pieces that took me months to learn (one took me a full year to polish), so I would be very disappointed if I performed and didn't have the audience's attention. One thing that baffled me was when people thought God had zapped me with talent, and didn't comprehend how many hours I spent practicing and perfecting the pieces I played for church (and weddings, and competitions, and...). It didn't bother me, but it did astound me. At least they appreciated and loved the pieces I performed, and that made it all worth it. I don't know what advice to give you except to try not to let it bother you. Keep on playing beautiful music and enjoying what you do!

I'm disappointed for you. I used to go to all the pianist Ivo Pogorelich's (sp?) performances. Once the audience was making so much noise, he stopped playing right in the middle.

I love Ivo.

I'm so sorry, WC....this is just terribly sad. Ofcourse you're disappointed; you worked hard on that piece and it didn't get the appreciation it rightly deserved. Sometimes people can be rude and cruel without even realizing it....it just plain sucks
