Sounds like you do need a sleeker black boot that can do snow for the days you are trekking to the opera. Love the Blondos....yay Sveta! I may have to get those too. I have been eyeing some Rockport styles (below) but I don't know anything about the brand. Perhaps you ladies up North know more. You could add some leg warmers or boot cuff if you need more warmth while walking and then slip off the leg warmers when you get there. One thing to consider is how much layering will fit in a slim boot.

Another vote for Blondos, when you aren't able to change out of your Sorels. I wore mine today in wretched icy slushy wet snow, and I need to wash the salt off, but they are totally waterproof. When I can, I swap out my boots at work, but the Blondos are a nice option when I'm going out.

Another vote for La Canadiennes. Super stylish but warm and dry even in the slush and ice. Great traction on ice. Seriously, these are good boots that look great indoors while performing amazingly outside. The only downside is that they aren't the cheapest boots around, but, given that my original brown suede ones are still in pristine condition after six years, the CPW can't be beat.

I have a pair of Sportos that I swear by! They are black, with a tiny wedge, and leopard print lining. 100% waterproof, good grip, and look like fashion boots. And they don't cost the earth, either.

Sorry to keep posting - I can't edit from this computer - I paid to have grippy Vibram soles put on all my leather-soled winter boots. It was $25 per pair and well worth it!

Now I'm going to sound contrarian, but thinking about this more - I just wear my regular boots when I'm dressing for work. My Gidigios, Ugg Cortonas, Harley-Davidsons... all are fine for work commuting. I'm usually doing parking lot to building, walking on sidewalks to get tea or lunch, even mild shoveling off of car - normal city activity as opposed to slogging through knee deep snow to cabin. I wipe off wet and salt with a leather wipe when I'm back home for the day.

It is -10F today with two feet of snow and I'm wearing my H-D midcalf boots, for instance.

Viva, those plaid boots are awesome!

Unfrumped, I think you are right. I think bc last winter was mild I kind of forgot about the black boot wardrobe hole, and have been fixating on the gold zipper thing, which is a want if we're being honest, not a need. But I actually don't have any warm tall black boots, never mind snow ready ones.

I am very seriously thinking about ordering Sveta's blondos!

Sorry, i meant to add this link too. Not as utilitarian looking as the Sorels (which I LOVE) but here are pretty black winter boots from Pajar (which makes my plaid ones that I love) -- really warm, good traction, waterproof, rugged. A little bit snow-princessy, if you like that sort of thing.

Clearly I am SO not the snow-boot advisee, but what I'm seeing is that with a black boot, you'll always look dressier even if the boot design has got to be more utilitarian. Black'll just be more dressy-expected and hence more "invisible" in a good way.

You need them to be mile-worthy and slush-worthy, so you would stick to your guns on waterproofing, height, traction, plus they have to fit, and then hopefully find the sleekest among those, but it will be okay that they're not true "dressy" boots.

Nice-looking, black, snow-worthy boots sound like a legit wardrobe hole for you.

I don't know if plaid is stylish (guess it depends where you live) but I LOVE my snow boots -- bought them two years ago through the Sundance catalog. They are from Pajar and are really warm. Mine are green and they are maybe one step up from basic snow boots but just enough to feel fun. Still only for casual, but that's most of my life anyway.

I agree, Una, but I think that's actually the issue with me and wedges (not just in snow, but all the time). Because the heel and forefoot are connected, it's like one big plane for slipping. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that I'm flat footed though. Anyway, I like about a one inch separate heel on my snow boots (which is what my brown Sorels have actually).

ETA: But did you see they have a tall version? I think they look awesome.

I actually thought the wedges might be the stupidest idea ever, but they really work. My biggest issue is actually with flat boots in winter - I feel I need a bit of heel to dig in to the snow or ice - otherwise it's just a flat surface asking for a slip and fall!

Una, I love the look of the Sorel wedges but the heel is too high for me. Plus I have trouble walking in wedges for whatever reason. I find a separate heel provides better balance for me, and balance is key when walking on snow!

They are waterproof (stomping-through-slushy-puddles waterproof), have great traction and warm enough even though the insulation layer is very thin. I had frost bite on my toes 25 years ago and now they go numb and white at the slightest cold. Well, not with my Blondos!
Now, I don't wear them for 2h walk in the woods of course but they are fine for 45 min walk to work in -20C with snow, ice and slush o the sidewalks: the traction is really very good on them, vibram-kind of good.
I am thinking of getting a short Blondo pair as well so I can wear with my slouchy trousers over them and extend their wear into winter even more.

I feel the same way about brown boots, & I think black boots would be great for your wardrobe! Finding the right one that is dressy + functional in snow is a little more tricky for sure...I like those sorels, but the quality might be issue.

I've found really good styles by Keen, Merrell, and Adidas. They are rapid-change style brands so it's easy to find off-season versions on sale sites for way less than the current brand price. Many are zip, not lace, which I personally find easier.

Yes the brown boots are Sorels too. The style was called "Sorelia Earhart" but they are no longer made. (Once upon a time they did come in black but when I was buying them the black was already long gone).

The amount of traction I'd want on my soles is not something that can be added to an existing sole. I want deep traction, like lug soles basically. I'd need to replace the sole entirely which is not really possible while maintaining the integrity of the boot.

I like your brown boots, are they Sorel too? What about having soles with better traction added to a pair of dressier boots that meet the other requirements?

Ha, I don't think my husband would appreciate my hanging on to him for a whole mile. (Yeah, I know I could take a cab. But I have a strange aversion to taking cabs. I prefer to walk. Yes, even in the snow.)

Honestly, people wear snow boots to the opera here all the time. It's not like i stick out. But it still bothers me a bit.

I really like those and I do think they are slightly dressier than the ones you own by virtue of being black and having non-contrasting laces. That said, I think that dressy snow boots with great traction may be an oxymoron. I face the same issues you do with needing to walk or take the subway to events. I wear something like those Sorrels for shopping or out to dinner in snowy weather without a second thought, but for the symphony or opera (which, admittedly, I rarely do), I would probably go for something dressy and weatherproof with not-so-great traction, like Aquatalias or your Naots, and just hang on to my date's arm on slippery sidewalks.

Oh, JAileen, thanks for the reminder about Timberlands! I used to wear Timberland hikers in the snow actually. I don't want a short boot though. It's not actually super cold here and stuff melts and refreezes almost daily, so more often than not there are quite deep slushy puddles of icy water, or your foot will go through some melting snow all the way up to the ankle or higher. I will definitely take a look at some of the taller Timberlands, although I think I'd need the real hikers for the traction.

I have a couple of pairs of Sorels and they are great for what they are. But they're not very walkable. When there's snow on the ground and it's icy and slippery, etc., I wear short waterproof boots. They have traction and keep my feet dry and warm even though they are not insulated. I have a pair like these Timberland boots (different color) and have worn them continuously these past two weeks, for running errands, dog walking, etc., in below freezing temps, including several days around 0F.

Yeah, Jules, some of the reviews on Zappos are not great either. I may see if I can find them in person to try on first.

Angie, I do swap my shoes at work to oxfords or clogs. But honestly my work is casual, and I change shoes mostly because my feet get too warm in the snow boots. It's the non-work occasions (like shopping, going out to dinner, concerts) that are troubling me at the moment.

You look snow boot casual chic. Can you swap out your boots at work? That's what I would do.

Sorrels look great, and the colour is very Diana.
