Colette, thank you for sharing your experience. I am very wary of ice. We live in a suburban area and we cross the street back and forth looking for traction. That's good to know about Yak Trax.

Ummlila, I know what you mean about crazy dogs: I have two terriers! The scottie pulls incessantly. Today, they did not cause my fall. They looked worried as I lay on the ground assessing my condition. Our dogs are spoiled and expect three walks a day regardless of weather. I didn't take them out this afternoon, though. I just stood around in the backyard. The Icebugs are intriguing...

I concur with Una on the Icebug recommendation. They make boots with metal studs in the bottom to grip into ice. I have a crazy dog who pulls all the time, live in a cold climate, have a very steep driveway, and go for two outings (run/ walk) per day, almost regardless of temperature. Icebugs are the first boots I have owned in which I do not fear broken bones.

You can't wear them inside, though; either they will damage floors or you will slip.

You can get the grip shoes with studs built in http://www.onlineshoes.com/wom.....p_id413871 or the web, which is a sort of overshoe. I did not like the web. Sorry not to include a find; for some reason it's not working for onlineshoes.com

I'm so sorry to hear about your fall and glad nothing is broken. I agree that Yak Trax are the way to go but you still need to be mindful of the ice. It took a couple potential falls that threw out my back before I gave in and purchased them. I suggest the type with the Velcro closure on top. My first pair were the walking kind and did fall off occasionally and then finally broke. My sweet replaced them for me with the upgraded pro version with the Velcro.

Suz, you're right. When I lived in the 4th snowiest town in the US, I had a 4x4 Subaru and one day I slid in it. After I got studded tires I felt like a cat with little cat claws. That was the best. I've been talking to my husband and I'm going to get the cleat things and put them on my Sorels with bad soles. Then at my leisure get another pair with the herringbone sole (that's what Zappos calls them).

Gail, there's a lot of wisdom in this group! All I can say is be careful out there!

Sorry about your fall I hope you have a speedy recovery. I have osteoporosis in my spine and am terrified of falling on ice. Fortunately so far we have had no snow or ice this winter.
I am bookmarking all these solutions in case I need them :)

JAileen, I'm so sorry to hear about your fall! OUCH!! And so scary, too. It's horrible to feel so at the mercy of chance and circumstance.

I am at the point of investing in some of those cleats myself. I haven't ever needed them so far -- but I almost fell the other day on ice under snow -- it is by far the worst because we tend to misjudge.

Anyway, I think that is really the only answer for true ice. No snow boot can manage it on its own. It's sort of like the difference between tires and winter tires and then winter tires with chains!

Jaileen - I am so sorry to hear about your fall. Just glad that the injury was not worse but I'm sure you are and will be pretty sore for awhile. I highly recommend polar cleat, which are actually from a canadian company -http://www.polarcleats.com/about.htm I wiped out on black ice on my driveway years back and that was it. The cleats easily slip on one handed over hiking boots, I need two hands for bigger snow boots, and stay on well - except in deep stuff (assuming you don't have the velcro on). Fabulous traction. My old pair has to be 10 yr old and still in fair shape and I have two pairs in the wings. I've used and gifted other cleats that looked more impressive and did not work. These babies get the job done. Good luck and get cleats asap. No tread will keep you safe and ice, you absolutely need cleats!!

Dee, thank you for your thoughts. I've had the black Sorels for several years, but haven't worn them much because of the drought we've had. With the El Nino, it looks like we're getting a real winter, and they may not have been a good choice.

I agree with Diana about soles. Any time there is a long/wide/flat portion, it has less traction than one with lots of small ridges or grippy areas.

When I lived in Calgary, I had a 20 minute walk straight up an icy hill to work every day. I eventually just put crampons on my commuting shoes and wore them every day. I felt a little silly, because usually people use them for hiking and whatnot, but I also never slipped or fell over the course of several winters.

Laura, Una, Lisa, thank you for your thoughts. Laura, I need to look into these various stud/wire attachments. Una, I've never heard of Icebugs. They are very intriguing. I wish Zappos had them because then I could have them tomorrow! Lisa, oww, yes, it hurts. I wanted to ask the doctor if he was really a doctor because a) he offered me a cast if I wanted, but then told me to keep bending and unbending my elbow and b) he said put either heat or cold on it, whichever I wanted.

Sorry to hear this! Falling is scary, and i know how much it hurts. Most people around here (Manitoba - home of ice and snow ) wear those yak tax things for serious outdoor walking and dog walking . Ice hidden under snow is the worst. And I even see , or hear, lol, the odd person clickign around inside the grocery store or Starbucks with them on.

For really slippery icy surfaces, Yak Trax do not work - you need spikes, studs or crampons. I recommend Ice Bugs (they are shoes, not grippers - all the rage here) or Stablicers or the like. I have the Due North ones in my car. Or these orange one for heavy duty.

Diana and Cheryl. thank you for your thoughts. I've never slipped in the white ones, and I've had them for 20 plus years. The black ones are newish. I may never wear them again. I don't trust them anymore. Maybe I should get some yak trax and leave them on the Timberlands for days like this. It snowed yesterday, then warmed a little and rained, then refroze, and then snowed again today. Oh, it's snowing right now. That's Godzilla El Nino for you.

Hmm, my sorels (old) have the sole like your white one, and I think the traction is pretty good. I also have boots with the lug sole like the timberlands which are also decent but not as good as the ridgy sorels. I do tend to avoid soles like your black one because I think the big flat surfaces do lend themselves to slipping on ice, although they might be better for fluffy snow (more surface area). I prefer deep, narrow ridged, possibly slightly pointy treads. But honestly there are some times where the ice will defeat everything.

I'm sorry to hear about your fall. Ouch! That's the thing I hate most about winter. All the ice and falling.

I have considered yaktrax but decided it would be too inconvenient to keep taking them on and off. You really can't wear them indoors at all and I'm worried they'd screw with my gait, which can spell trouble for my fussy feet. It's basically like the shoe equivalent of putting chains on your tires.... Probably better for those who live in non urban settings.

I spent some time at the orthopedic clinic today after a bad fall this morning while walking the dogs. My elbow isn't broken, fortunately, but it really hurts to bend. I was wearing snow boots. It was snowing, but also icy under the snow. I was wearing the Sorels with the black sole. The white sole is a very old pair of Sorels, and the brown are waterproof Timberland boots that I've been wearing a lot.

For snow boot experts: Do you think it would have made any difference wearing either of the other boots? Do you have boots with a better sole you would recommend? A friend recommended Yak Trax. She said she just leaves them on a pair of boots.

By the way, a very kind young woman came out if her house to see if I was all right. I really appreciated her concern.
