Hmm! I don't do androgynous, either. (And I wear me-made 50s skirts and vintage items regularly, so I'm probably not the best one to ask for sneaking in anything!) For what it's worth, here's my first attempt at Cole Haan shiny sneakers with a dress. I don't think it's "sneaking" in anything - not exactly subtle! - but it's a deliberate style choice and not a let's-be-comfortable decision. If I'd worn this to work, I would have added a topper and/or some dressy or shiny jewelry.

Oh sneakers...how I love thee! Skinny jeans or pants, wide leg pants (as J Lo did in Shades of Blue) dressy track pants,,,,.all work with sneakers. I think the key is to repeat the color of the sneaker somewhere else in your outfit. Look on Pinterest and you'll see what I mean. The other technique is to make the Color of the sneaker "pop". Like an all black outfit with a white snaker. Or all neutral outfit with a neon sneaker.

Cerinda -- I definitely have the raw materials for that look!

I am holding off on trying sneakers at the office until a "quiet" day (i.e. no meetings with senior management or external clients) and this week seems to be lacking in such days.

Echoing L'Abeille: play up the contrast. Maybe a proper blazer and dark wash jeans (rolled, if necessary to fully expose your sneaks), an unstuffy neutral tee (maybe graphic?), and those bright yellow beauties. Classic gold hoops, maybe pearls.

kkards -- I hear ya. I do think the Jet Crops are closer to "passing" as street wear than most athlesiure wear. They do have an elastic waist but I always wear something that hides that. I actually became aware of them via a Metafilter post on just this topic. I added an example image below. Mine are plain black like these as well.

L'Abielle and Ginger -- Actually, historically I've been more of a skirt/dress person. (Perhaps in the future I should get input on how to sneak my handmade dresses made from 1950s patterns into the office ...) And I have a slender but decidedly curvy body type, so I would be challenged to pull off androgynous. Having multiple pairs of jeans is a fairly recent thing, as I finally found a brand -- NYDJ --that actually fits me! I'm kind of excited about having a pants wardrobe at the moment. But as the weather warms back up I expect skirts will return to the mix.

I have worn Keds Teacup and Converse Flex Ballet sneakerish flats with skirts, but not sure how to make full-on sneakers look right. I should add that most of my skirts are a-line or full, and to the knee -- not sure if that makes a difference in feasibility. I'd love to see examples, and perhaps it's something I could play around with for weekend looks to see how it looks/feels.

Aside: I work with engineers, mostly male. It surprises me that almost everyone in my office seems to think that skirts and dresses automatically mean dressed up!

This is a great question. My workplace is very similar, with a very large workforce. It's also a large facility and it's not unknown to walk a quarter mile to get to a meeting, so comfortable footwear is typical. But I find myself more like L'Abeille - I prefer dress or skirt. My actual job is a little more on the business/dressy side, though I work next to people who wear jeans daily. So I don't want to rock the boat too much. But fancy sneakers are so wonderful to wear!

I think I'm at the opposite end from you of the androgynous dressing spectrum. Other than weekend on call shifts in jeans and sneaks, if I wear sneakers to work it's with a dress, skirt, or culottes. I say go big or go home.

RWS…this is just me, (and i'm wondering about the "sneaking sneakers"), but i wouldn't wear the Lululemon pants with sneakers to work, unless the dress code was truly casual…when i'm pushing/stretching the dress code i find it best to do it with one item at a time.

Thanks everybody. This gives me some great ideas!

rachylou -- these are the ones for the look you suggest!
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/i.....UY695_.jpg

lisap -- I like the idea of doing the menswear thing. Closest fit in my closet now are Levis 501s jeans (women's version) , which I sized up on, so they do have a unisex slouchy look. Oh, and I just realized that my Lululemon Jet Crops might work for this too! I have lots of preppy cardigans, some even cashmere, so I can play with this. My two colored handbags are the smaller size I use on the weekends, but some would actually match my sneaks and I never thought of that. :D

Jewelry I struggle with. I wear the same subtle jewelry most days. But my MIL gifted me most of her lovely collection when she retired, and though it's different than my minimal jewelry style, I'd like to make use of it. Subject for another post I guess, whenever I have time to get some of those pieces out and start playing around.

Kari -- this is sort of I have done the two times I have worn the black and cream Sauconys to work, but with the other suggestions I could dress them up a bit more.

kellygirl -- A blazer was my first thought too, because 99% of my pants are jeans. I have black, dark teal, and cream blazers now. More Spring-like blazers are on my wishlist!

What about a t shirt and blazer with jeans? I have black and white Brooks that I wear like this. I think this look would be fun with more colorful sneaks too.

I would wonder about keeping the sneakers low contrast with your pants; not matching them exactly but keeping the tones/contrast similar.

Ha! Rachylou....

I like shoes like this with slouchy trousers - playing up the menswear side of the look. Side pockets, low rise looser fit pants with a cashmere or linen sweater, or a silk blouse, and some very restrained statement jewellery. You could pick up one of the sneaker colours in the sweater or blouse (e.g, if the sweater was a colour block or intarsia pattern). Or pick up the colour in your handbag.

I've been wondering how to wear my extensive collection of retro sneaks (mainly Saucony Jazz/Jazz Low Pro and Onitsuka Tigers, but also some Converse and Vans) to the office while still maintaining a professional look overall. I think I can get away with it in my particular office because the office dress code is a bit schizophrenic: I see everything from t-shirts and athletic shoes (software developers) to expensive suits (usually upper management) daily. Job-wise, I am somewhere in the middle. I think this gives me some leeway, as does the fact that there are relatively few women in the office, so for women the dress code is even less clear.

So, I am seeking inspiration -- for those of you so inclined, how do you dress up sneakers for work?

Below are some examples of the kind of sneaks I'm talking about. The black and cream Saucony Jazz are the one pair of sneakers I have worn to work a few times. The yellow and blue pair are a more typical example -- most of my collection is pretty colorful, which admittedly does make them harder to "dress up".

The blush pink Saucony Bullets were just released, and I think I "need" them!
