KM, interesting. I don't remember the Prada shoes you mention but I would be curious to see them. You are right about the lack of comfy & dressy shoes. At present I find slip-ons a decent compromise.

Your post made me think of shoes from the late 1990s that were a hybrid of sneaker and shoe. Prada had some (I can't find any pictures online); I had three pairs of knock-offs in a variety of styles. I know people have reservations about those, but I loved them. They were so comfortable but looked dressy enough in a whimsical, almost futuristic kind of way.
If I had resources and business acumen I would come up with a line of TRULY comfortable shoes that are also TRULY dressy. How come we live in 2017 and no one has solved this puzzle???
PS. I have tried brands that try to do this, like Aerosoles, but their designs are so clunky...
PS2. Anyone knows the Prada shoes I'm talking about? I'd love to find a vintage pic just for kicks.

Minimalist my slip-ons are Alfredo Giantin. I have to check the model, anyway they are blue and the material is a kind of velvet. had never heard of this brand before buying them last Spring but I have to say that they are super comfortable and indestructible.

Update. Hello dear Fabbers! I returned yesterday from Belarus. At the end I decided to forget sneakers and took my slip-ons and a pair of warm booties. The weather was pleasant - not very cold, sunny and dry. The slip-ons worked perfectly. The booties never came out. I wish I had more clothes but at present my wardrobe is extremely minimal so I "made do". I hope to do better next time ....

I know exactly where you are coming from, I am not a huge sneaker fan although I have been starting to wear them lately. And I am starting to like them more. My favorite shoes for walking around Europe in chilly weather were my moto boots. They are loose so I could wear them with inserts and thick socks and my feet could still wiggle around, I was perfectly comfortable the whole time.

As far as which shoes: whatever you pick, test in advance to make SURE you will be comfortable walking in them for long periods. I still regret missing the Imperial art gallery in Vienna because the boots and shoes i packed were not as all-day as i assumed, and my feet hurt too much.

As far as your poison eye goes: that is of course subjective, but also tends to be very fickle. I have travelled, in the remote past long before fashion sneakers were a thing, in parts of the world where it seemed perfectly natural to wear sneakers with a dress; I saw other people doing it, it was comfortable and practical, and soon I found myself doing it without a second thought. And weeks later I have been in urban settings where it was hard for me to believe that I had ever worn sneakers with a skirt.

So I would suggest 2 things: One, dig up and immerse yourself in some street style photos from the places you will be visiting. Two, find some comfy sneaks and actually wear them in an outfit a couple of times, even if you never go out of the house. That will give you a chance to train your eye and see if you can imagine being comfortable with this look.

The kind of sneaker matters, so does the kind of outfit. I am happy wearing white or colored sneakers with a dress as a semi-casual summer outfit (so, work or church). With pants it's harder for it to feel anything but super-casual. And I don't own black /dark oxford-like sneakers, because I'm always in boots in the winter, which led to the problem in Vienna (so, I guess I discovered a wardrobe hole that will exist if I do more travel in Europe /more temperate winters.

Honestly, I don't think sneakers are inherently more comfortable than other flats. It's still a crapshoot in terms of last and fit and materials. So if you don't like the look, focus on silhouettes you do like that are good for walking and renowned for comfort.

I found the Ahnu Montara that Bonnie links above to be very comfortable and good for walking long distance. I had the boot version several years back and put a lot of miles on them.

The brand Lowa makes some very nice travel/walking/light hiking shoes as well: https://www.lowaboots.com/womens/casuals-sandals They are well-constructed and will last a lifetime compared to other sneakers.

Sisi, I feel you! I am not a fan of sneakers either but sporty has never been my style. I do like and have worn the more fashionable, slip on styles. But you can also find other comfortable flats like oxfords or loafers if they are more your style.

I'm going for a similar trip with chilly weather and lots of walking in Europe in a few weeks, and I've decided on Ahnu low hikers. They look like oxfords and have lots of support for long days of walking. I'm bringing khaki color and black pants to wear with them.

I love sneakers. You can't beat them for a big trip with lots of walking. You could very well use them up on one trip if you walk as much as my brother makes me on vacation ;)

But I will say I avoid Velcro because it catches on your clothes and rips them up.

Sisi, just a thought. I'd recommend buying the ones you're leaning toward and maybe a couple of others you find and like, of course, making sure they can be returned. Then wear them around your house to see how comfy they are and even try them on with some outfits you're thinking of taking on your trip. Then you can "test" and find your favorites.

I've been to Europe 2 times and have never mastered finding the perfect walking shoe. Other than for Paris, I felt as though a sneaker would have been a perfect choice. (It was when fashion sneakers were very fringe, so before I left on the trip I hadn't considered the option.)

There's the sporty type of sneakers, like mesh nikes, and then there are fashion sneakers, like Stan smiths and converse.

The sporty type I would only wear with sporty clothes like leggings. I would not wear them with jeans or any non-gear.

The fashion type I would wear with casual clothes.

Personally, I like walking around in dressy flat shoes just as well as sneakers. But my feet are not fussy.

If your holiday is a casual holiday with lots of walking, sneakers are a good choice. Personally, I am not wild about wearing sneakers with dressy outfits. Maybe it reminds me too much of my morning commute (I wear sneakers to and from work). But I think they look great with more casual outfits and they are unbeatable for comfort. I have these missoni X converse sneakers, which are pretty cute.

I too have had a poison eye for sneakers. I run many miles a week and wear running shoes strictly for that and wear crosstrainers for dance aerobics. But outside of that I have trouble embracing sneakers for regular wear. I am however trying to change that and just bought my first pair of slip ons to try. My eye is adjusting. I think it's in how they're styled.

Thank you Summer, Jenni and Maneera !

Pros: the sneakers I have seen are very comfortable (rubber wedge) and have no laces but velcro straps (easy and quick - I like everything that is easy and quick).

Cons: on the expensive side - almost 100 euro.

I tried to add a picture from the internet site but it failed.

As Maneera suggests, I had also considered to take my trusty blue slip-ons that are warm, comfortable and dressy. This is an option.

I will ponder and let you know.

Knowing myself, I know how it will end - if I don't buy them I will regret, and if I buy them I will regret

I agree.....but then I'm a die-hard sneakers fan.

How about some comfy slip-on sneakers that look less frumpy than laced sneakers (or gym shoes). I find them quite comfortable for city walking, and I have very fussy feet.

I love these Adidas sneakers (#1) and find they look quite good with most outfits. But perhaps you might prefer a lace-less slip-on style. They come in many colors and patterns (I love leopard and snake print ones, or metallic silver)

There are just so many different kinds Sisi. I had an epiphany about them when I was becoming a bit more fashionable about 8 years ago. I had always worn the Reebok or Adidas type of running shoe, used to be a runner decades ago but hadn't run for some time, just bought those shoes for walking, casual etc as in a habit I suppose. Then I felt they looked so frumpy! And I saw some black and grey Skechers, more dainty than Skechers are now, with no shoelaces and even a pretty black lace pattern. Later I got something else with leopard print, and last year some blush pink leather sneakers. Just so comfortable. I think your co-worker may be right. Just pick some that are quite "you" and see what happens!

I have a super poison eye for gym shoes (sneakers) worn outside the gym hall even if I understand the high level of comfort and practicality and sometimes I even kind-of like them on others.

Now, in a couple of weeks I am leaving for a short trip to Northern Europe and for a chilly climate and lots of walking I cannot think of anything better than ... a pair of sneakers!

Saturday I spotted a model that I do not dislike and I am very indecisive. Spend money for a pair of shoes that maybe later I will not wear anymore? My coworker, who is an expert at sneakers, told me, buy them, you will see how much you will use them.

What do you suggest? Thank you!
