Lol @ironkurtin, I like the idea of an active bitch face, it seems like a tool that would come in handy every so often :D ... and of course it is not worth dwelling on, the situation just grated my nerves a little on that particular day.  As @Deborah so compassionately suggests, I suspect that Mr. Smile! was not entirely in his right mind.  Onward. Or had when I was younger.  I used to be asked a lot "What are you smiling about?" Just as annoying I might add. I guess I had resting smile face. lol. Seriously. I think I learned it from reading too many fashion mags as a teen. Smiling was really pushed. I remember reading that if you smile a lot you'll get smile wrinkles instead of frown wrinkles. So I thought it would work. I can't vouch for the scientific effectiveness as aging still seems to utilize gravity. It would be great to have a really good line to come back with if someone says this to you. Like several of you, it seems to be happening less frequently as I've gotten a little older (and doesn't that just encapsulate the power dynamics involved!). Deborah, you're right that a lot of people with less than stellar social interaction skills seem to fall back onto these sorts of weird things to say, and it's not really worth it confronting them about it, because you're just going to cause more distress. I once had an older gentleman engage me in conversation about how I'd be so pretty if I just lost weight. There's a whole load of information available about street harassment. Men are not subjected to it. Also it's common for men to make comments on what we're eating, and on whether we should be eating such and such. I'd first assumed this was only for the women who were overweight, but apparently it's even directed at women who are thin. I saw a great pictorial/comic recently on my facebook feed, explaining to men why street harassment is a problem, and it included the whole "smile" thing along with the more overtly sexual/sexist stuff. Can't find it right now though, sorry. On top of the obvious feminist/human reasons to hate this, it also used to make me viscerally upset at times. Here I was minding my business and doing my thing, and might even have been feeling quite happy (which was not always the case), and someone would randomly call me out for not looking right to them?
