Thanks Zapotee: good to find out that it's the freight crates. That makes all the cases I've had make sense. Cheers

You could freeze them. But with a chemical smell, I'd be scared to wear them for fear of burns.

Charcoal is better at absorbing odors than newspaper in my limited experience. I got rid of a smoky smell in a thrifted purse by putting charcoal (fish-tank type) in a muslin bag inside it, plus more in a muslin bag outside it, with it all sealed in a plastic bag for a week. I don't know if it will work for that particular smell (stinky newness) though.

Ah, I know that smell. It comes from the freight crates. China goods are mostly shipped by sea. It is impossible to get rid of, unless it is something you can wash. I just returned a pair of shoes I bought from Bluefly because of that reason. I'm sorry.

I think I know the smell. It wafts out at you from cheap shoe shops. It's Chinese made 'fake everything'.
I filled my offensive smelling (online bought) shoes with baby powder and stuffed them with damp strong paper towel. They weren't a particularly bad example of the offensive pong, but they are now wearable. JUST! They shoot you a reminder whiff puff, when you least expect it.
(Was it declared, up front, that they were made in China and/or are they sized marked as if they are intended for the local market? i.e. send them back - tell them you have improved them!!

My husband bought some spectator style dancing shoes online. They arrived accompanied by a horrible chemical odor.

We put them in a bad with newspaper and baking soda and left them outdoors for a few weeks. It helped a bit. Anyone have other ideas? Has anyone had the same experience? Does it go away in time?
