I like that yellow Jcrew dress a lot! I like it in pink as well. I'd try it on and see how it look over jeans, and if I like it, I'd go for it!

I like the yellow. They also have the dress in solid colors. It hits mid thigh so I'd definitely wear it with skinnies or clamdiggers. It's in the swim section of the store but I think it's okay to wear over a cami for smart casual.

Patience, that J. Crew dress is adorable! Are you thinking of it in the pink or yellow? I like both!

Thanks for the info on tailors. I guess I'll just resign myself to paying a higher price for alterations for now, but I'll keep my eye out and definitely let you know if I find something cheaper. What's funny is that they charge so much to do a simple hem, but to do something like take in a shirt and add darting and all sorts, they'll only charge $10.00 more than they would to hem a skirt or dress. Go figure.

Angie, I'm 5'3". Thanks for the great post on tunics. Of the pics you posted I can most easily see myself in the first one. I like the pink shift too but I'm not sure that it would work for me. Also, I can't remember the last time I owned an article of pink clothing. I'm considering this one:

http://www.jcrew.com/catalog/p.....=cat302251

which I tried and looks fine. I also bought this one on sale to have hemmed:

http://search.bloomingdales.co.....ntemporary

(the one at the top with the logo). I think it looks good but it's one of those that might draw some pregnant comments.

Ana, I'm afraid I don't know of an inexpensive tailor. I use the mall or Mesa alterations which is near where I work. They cost the same. I just noticed another one near my office to try but I'm afraid I'm not in the loop for tailors. So if you find one be sure to let me know.

I have blonde hair and pale skin as well. I am seriously thinking about the light citron because I think it would be bright enough that it wouldn't just wash us out or make us look greenish-yellow. I ordered the sour lemon cardigan, thinking it would be a brighter yellow, and it wasn't at all, and had a slightly green tint to it. It would have been okay if it had been brighter, but it was just too dark and close to my skin color...I think it just made me look ill. J. Crew actually changed the color--the earlier pieces they came out with this season were that yellowy-green Sour Lemon. The newer ones are a very nice shade of warm yellow, so they must have had problems selling the previous color.

The light citron seems very light and bright. I think it would look so crisp with white or ink blue. Here's the color on one of their models. Yeah, she is totally tan and gorgeous so of course it looks great on her, but it gives a better representation of the color than just seeing it against a white background:

http://www.jcrew.com/catalog/p.....=cat302185

The Kelly green is a beautiful color as well. I've found that it is a much darker, more emerald green in person.

Thanks for the comments on the Anthro top. A lot of it isn't really my style, but every once in a while I find something that I like and I think could work really well in my wardrobe.

Christie, I just realized I totally got you mixed up with Julia! Sorry about that! Have you ever posted pictures on here? So, I'm not *sure* that the light citron cardigan would work on you, since I was thinking you had medium skin and dark hair, but I think the shape of it is great, especially if you are outside and then inside and need to carry a cardigan with you for air conditioning. That color still might be good (it would look awesome with white--very fresh and summery), and if not, I would definitely recommend trying it in another color.

Patience, I completely understand about the heat, since we're in the same city. Austin gets so humid and nasty during the summer. I probably won't wear my tunic over jeans look for much longer, but I am planning on pulling it back out when the weather gets a little cooler again. If you wait for Autumn, you may find more structured options that would work for you. I just bought the NY&Co tunic in brown, and it's pretty shapeless. I dropped it off at Ace Alterations today and I'm having it taken in quite considerably. I really like the color and the roll sleeves though--just my style. I am also definitely investing in more dresses this year--they are so easy and a lot cooler even than shorts, I think. You bought that bold floral dress from Ann Taylor, right? Love that! There's a place at the Arboretum called "Harold's," you might find some nice dresses in there as well. Good quality, and the style is comparable to AT or ATL.

P.S. Patience, I have to get things altered quite often and my bill is really racking up at Ace Tailors. Do you know any other places that do a really good job but maybe don't cost as much? I know Ace charges $22.50 to do a simple hem on a dress ($28.50 if you want to preserve the hem). They always do a fantastic job, but it would be nice if there was an equally great, less expensive place in town. Since I've only lived here a couple of years, I thought maybe you might have a better suggestion. Thanks!

It’s sounds to me like you’re not at all bohemian (I’m not either), and it IS a question of finding the right dress to wear over jeans. Remind me of your height? ( I’m posting about this look tomorrow)

I'm not really feeling the tunic over jeans look this season either. I keep telling myself that I just haven't found the right tunic but now I'm starting to wonder. Somewhere at the back of my mind I'm thinking that I might as well just do the dress without jeans because it would be cooler. I'm also just having a hard time visualizing the look I'd want. Everybody looks great in their shirt dresses and this is definitely my style but for some reason it hasn't appealed to me enough to go out and buy one. The tops I have ended up with are all hip length so maybe it's just a fluke of what's out there because I probably would have bought the same tops if they were 8 inches longer and then I would have had a tunic. Well, Angie has said she will blog about this so maybe then I'll get some ideas.

Super suggestions as always Ana.

And by the way, you'd look great in that Anthropologie top. You CAN get great things there. I often compliment people on tops that they have bought from this store. If it’s your style then go for it. I’m a little hard on them for reasons we have discussed but that should never stop anyone from finding what is right for them. In retail we NEVER leave a stone unturned because retailers change their look EVERY season. Look at how BR blossomed again this season, but poor old Gap is still in retail trenches.

And you’ll be fine wearing shorter tops with skinnies Christie!

Hmm....I wouldn't describe myself as having overly large hips, but I'm not sure I would feel comfortable just wearing skinny jeans with a shorter top. There is one top from Anthropologie (I know, boo-hiss) that I am planning on getting that I tried on and I think looks really good--very clean and tailored. It's coral, and has a slightly flared hem. I may try that with the jeans, even though it's shorter:

http://www.anthropologie.com/a.....;color=mus

For you, I would try a blouse with a jacket over it, or maybe just a slightly longer tunic top rather than a full on dress. Another option I *might* try (if I get the courage) is a cardigan that is belted. I think I would need to find a slightly longer cardi than the ones I currently have, though. Most I have are from J. Crew and on me, they all hit almost at high hip. Do you have a longer cardi (one that falls slightly below hip bone?) That might be another good look for you. Oh, or the short sleeve cardis from J. Crew:

http://www.jcrew.com/catalog/p.....=cat302185

I currently have this in black, and have the white and sapphire color on order. It's a fantastic cardigan and it goes with everything. I might try the sapphire color when I get it with a yellow belt and the white skinnies, and gold sandals or my yellow flats. The light citron color would look fabulous on you!

How about blousy tops in plain colours? Do you have to wear a jacket? I know that it gets hot in your neck of the woods. As long as your feet are groomed and your sandals are dressy – you can wear this look with sandals to work.

How about a sweater vest with a fitted short-sleeved blouse underneath, a funky belt and a great pair of sandals?
(example: esprit.com, under sweaters, the navy comfort sweater - brighter colours are possible as well with your white jeans

A fitted jacket (or swing jacket) and a shirt/tank top with a bit of shimmer:
http://www.jcrew.com/catalog/m.....d92813171#

Some sort of blousy top in a colour that pops and stylish earrings/necklace

Scoopneck short-sleeved knitted top, a colourful scarf/neckerchief and cute bracelet

Short-sleeved blouson with a camisole (I wouldn't do the black on black though)

Thanks Ana. I'm not a fan of the tunic or dress over jeans. I think it looks fine on others, but I hate the way a dress or tunic feels over jeans. Too restrictive. Do you have any shorter tops you plan to wear with the jeans?

Christie, I am planning on buying the white Esprit skinny jeans as well! I was going to wear it with my brown tunic shirt I got at NY&Co:

http://www.nyandcompany.com/ny.....=cat350004

And with that I was going to pair a yellow belt and my yellow AK Impress flats. I know you have a black shirt dress you wear over jeans, that would look really nice with red or yellow or turquoise accents. Very summery.

I think open sandals would be fine with skinny jeans. You will probably be able to see more of them since the leg opening is smaller.

I think I've officially decided to get the straight-legged white jeans from Esprit (I'm just waiting until my husband has recovered from my last buying spree). I would like advice on what to pair them with to be smart casual. I am planning to get the jeans hemmed to wear with flats. I would like to wear them with open sandals, if possible.

I tend to be a modern-classic (slight urban/artsy tendencies), but I do love unpredictable, fun pieces with little designs that are quirky. I dislike patterns, and I really gravitate toward early 60's style (also late 50's to mid-60's). Any ideas for how to put all of this together into something I can wear to meet clients and to meetings?

Thanks so much.
