Thanks for the advice everyone! I'm glad you all have confirmed what I thought smart casual was, but it appears that the host wasn't sure, I think she really meant to say semi-formal as that appears to be what the people I've talked to (including the host) are wearing.

The dress is lovely, I think that you could totally carry shoes and then put them on.

I have to agree with the coments about the dress code though. Cocktail dresses says semi-formal to me and jeans with a dressy top says smart casual.

Love the dress! I think you can use it and add a cardigan for a more casual outfit.

I personally wouldn't have thought smart casual would call for cocktail dress. I would have thought maybe smart trousers or skirt with top, nicely accessorised of course with higher heels etc. Or also a nice dress like the one that you linked, or maybe the sliky one you mentioned. I think that either of them would be spot on for the dinner. I will be interested to see if anyone agrees with my comments. I am still in the very early learning stages!

I'm attending a party at a fancier restaurant where the host said that the dress should be "smart casual". I've talked to a few other girls, who go out to occasions like this more frequently than I do and they are planning on wearing cocktail dresses, which I know they have a large selection of. I'm incredibly poor right now, so I'm attempting to make an outfit out of what I have at home! I'll be throwing a black shrug and tights under this (I'll be travelling by transit in about -13F weather, brr) and wearing black pumps (carrying them with me, wearing fairly classy black knee-high boots for travelling): http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/img-thing?.out=jpg&size=l&tid=11592029

Is this dress appropriate? My only other options are a silky blue dress of a similar cut, and a navy sheath dress that I usually wear to interviews; as well as a few casual dresses.
