Go for the silver ones. You are right, we tend to multiply whatever works for us and then we wonder why it became a uniform. This is something I will keep in mind.

Good thoughts, Mo. I'm trying to see which pieces really " make a difference" vs. are more of the same, too.
I think your epiphany overlaps a little bit with the idea of whether an item is really great and really" you" ( or "me"), too. If shorts, or pants, or a jacket, or whatever are really a great fit and fabric, then I am more likely to want to, and be able to, use that item in multiple ways( dress down/ dress up) and not keep looking for the same thing. So, you probably need casual shorts, and even some cargo shorts, but, within laundering constraints, you
may be able to run lean on numbers in any one style and develop more
variety in the shorts capsule.

And thinking about trying to limit our closet numbers, it makes sense to get a different style/new colour- if it will be worn- as it creates the 'freshness' we all crave.
Too many 'duplicates' can take up valuable space!

The first outfit I have in mind is with drapey white tee, silver flats and a skinny belt. Finished with my thin tassel necklace. Simple, sticking to the neutral color palette. Maybe branch out from there to blush (shoes and/or shirt), maybe topped with a BFish white blazer if proportions work, maybe heels if they don't look too OTT with the shortness of the shorts.

Love these shiny shorts! This is something I've wondered about, as I have a magpie-like obsession for statement pieces like this, only to lapse back to a more limited comfort zone of "tried and true" after time passes and not to reach for my edgier pieces. I'd be very interested in your strategies for incorporating a piece that feels more daring into your look - great epiphany!

Lovely shorts!

Thanks for sharing your epiphany. I can get in the rut that Aubergine described: somehow feeling like you're wearing the same outfit every day, even though you're not. I hadn't thought about changing things up with regard to dressiness levels or with regard to what will take your wardrobe in a different, although related, direction. I'm going to try to remember that next time I am struggling with whether to purchase A or B!

I love the sound of silver shiny shorts!

And I'm definitely guilty of buying the same shape in different colors. Then I wonder why I always feel like I'm wearing the same outfit over and over. For me, being hard to fit probably makes it worse, since I always just assume that it's not worth it to try different silhouettes, so color/pattern is my best chance at variety.

Yeah, I think it's dressiness levels that are noticed most -- unless you are usually all neutrals and you show up in a vivid colour. Or you normally never wear patterns and suddenly you're in a Hawaiian shirt.

Yes, Deb. And I do like have a couple variations of my faves, just for me. But in the interest of trying to keep a decent lid on my wardrobe size, realizing one or two most silhouettes will do, and that I don't need one in every one of 'my' colors, is a step in the right direction. I know this intellectually, but when it comes to wanting, I conveniently forget.

EDIT: in essence, this is a switch from using color for variety and instead using different silhouettes or dressiness levels.

I was debating some shorts for summer. Olive green cargo military look ones. And the shiny metallic, dressy shorts I'd never found. A thought popped into my head about my wardrobe overall. That if I bought the shiny, dressy shorts I would be doing something new, and different. A dressy short. If I do the olive, I'd be continuing with a tried and true look - casual shorts.
I got to thinking about how sometimes we find a silhouette or style we like and then duplicate it in myriad ways, through varying colors mainly. But when others see us they likely see, for instance, "slouchy jean with heeled sandal", not dark wash slouchy, light wash slouchy, medium wash slightly less slouchy, etc. I think we get caught up in our own subtle variations on a theme but the basic outfit is not much changed to the casual observer.
So, will olive shorts change my look much overall? Not much. Will silver shiny shorts? Much more likely. Guess which I am going to go for!
