sorry, missed some of these responses!

Joy, I already wear several piece of gold jewelry every day, most with sentimental value, so that would not be a change for me ...but it is a good idea.

Firecracher I love the blazer idea. I still have a few from my working days but rarely wear them, they seem too formal. I do like the more modern slightly looser fit ones but have never been able to find ones that look good on me. I've recently expanded my thinking to a broader idea of "jackets" rather than just "blazers'.

cat2 - good idea to mix work clothes with casual ones.

Hi Texstyle! Nice to hear from you, it's been a while! I love the idea of embracing what you really love ... for me learning that lesson well would be a welcome change :-) I think I'm a lot like you in terms of not wanting all those maximal styles/details ... just a few items is a enough. Same for dark colors is summer. And "giving yourself permission to NOT buy them" is a fabulous way to think about it.

Lynne, metallic shoes and a red bag are great ideas!

What fabulous ideas here! Janet, I love seeing your statement pieces. Donna, thankyou for reminding me of Angie's advice. Roberta, I adore your silver platform sneakers!

I find adding something Metallic or shiny patent -ussually shoes - helps my simple work wardrobe. Even wearing scrubs, my gold sneakers keep me feeling 'dressed'. And I have a red patent handbag that seems to play nicely and elevate everything around it. Which, come to think of it, is a good reminder to do the same :).

One simple thing I've done is embraced the fact that I love simplicity and minimalism in my clothes so I've given myself permission not to buy patterned items, ruffles, puffy sleeves, pleats, or anything that feels maximal to me. I have a few things that are patterned and that's enough for me.

I've also gone back to wearing black tops sometimes because I need the contrast with my light hair and skin. Usually that means a nice black tee or linen top and well fitting jeans or other bottoms. I also wear navy and other dark colors even in summer but have plenty of light options too.

I've embraced linen pants (or linen blend) and have found a few pair that work well for me and feel great in summer heat.

I change out my shoes and bag once in a while, not matching necessarily but they "go together" in terms of bookending my hair or belt or something.

A leopard print belt has proven useful to add just a touch of "more" to some of my simple outfits - esp. with a black top - it ties in with the black but also with my hair and shoes/bag.

Recently using bronzer to bring more color to my face and neck has been a fun change.

I have done a good job of incorporating my work wardrobe in with my casual pieces and making a surprisingly large number of them work. I am now working on the jewelry box, which also had some pieces set aside that I really wasn’t wearing much. There is really no reason not to wear them, it’s not like I have a tiara tucked away! So I have been slowly working them in as well.

In the past year or two, I have added blazers to my wardrobe. I had gotten rid of all the blazers I used to wear for work, back in the early 2000s. They felt too formal for me to wear casually, especially in a fitted style. Recently the less fitted, straighter, boyfriend-style blazers that have been trending for a few years caught my attention, and they are much more comfortable to me. Even as I added the first one to my wardrobe, I didn't reach for it very often. This year I'm finally starting to wear them more. I feel they are helping me shift to a more sophisticated look, while maintaining the laid-back style that feels authentic to my personality.

Angie’s troubleshooting formula of color, pattern, texture, shine. I try to have all four in every outfit but must admit I lean into texture and shine since often my only color is my specs.

I would love to have a variety of colored specs like Angie but finding ones with the narrow/Asian bridge I need is a huge and frustrating challenge.

What a great question! This year I consciously stepped away from lots of color and embraced neutrals. With a mostly neutral outfit, a dash of color really stands out and feels fresh to me. As an example, my wee lime green bag is very fun with brown, black, or navy. Ditto my silver platform sneaks.

Small changes that have made a big difference to me lately are:

- Not being so matchy-matchy with footwear and bags. As long as both relate to the outfit individually, I feel like I look a bit more modern if everything isn’t *too* perfectly matched. It helps that most of my footwear and bags are neutral.

- Being more aware of texture in my outfits. If I’m wearing a soft, drapey pant, instead of a soft tee, choose a more crisp, structured woven top. This really helps in summer when I can start to feel too one-note or too casual/sporty.

- Shoe selection! A simple change of shoe can take the same outfit from feeling too *whatever* (dressy, sporty, classic, etc) into feeling right. I’m not feeling my heeled sandals so much right now (to Irina’s point), as I’m mostly after a very casual vibe now. But if I put on a pair of joggers and a casual top, the heeled sandals may feel just right for adding a little something unexpected back into the outfit.

- Jewelry always plays a role for me. I’m dipping back into statement necklaces after some years of ignoring them. I have bracelets that I’m starting to wear again. But when I add another piece or two of jewelry to an outfit, the other pieces get smaller and simpler. For instance, if I wear a pendant necklace, I’ll wear a small stud earring instead of something large and dangly. It’s always a balance.

My number one way to change things is with eyeglass frames. I have multiple, in different colors and materials (metal, plastic, rimless). It’s fun to coordinate them with an outfit or pick a pair that gently pops against what I’m wearing depending on my mood and the schedule anticipated for the day.

Since I work in a place where we wear name tags, I have multiple colorful tag holders change them to coordinate with my outfits.

Shoes would be another, although instead of varying the color, I try to vary the style details.

Jewelry used to be a bigger element in my style. For whatever reason, I rarely wear much more than stud earrings, a watch of some sort and my wedding band.

Makeup is easy to change, and while I have a simple, go to natural look, I also change it up by using different eye liner or shadow, switching to a more vibrant blush or lip color, or adding a tiny bit of tan blender (bronzer).

Finally, I have a growing collection of knit items. Scarves, cardigans, cowls and vests that I can add to an outfit to change its character in an instant.

For nr 1- my pop of color was always yellow/mustard (instead for ex of red). I used to always have a bag in yellor/mustard for a pop of color and wore with everything and all seasons (but am a neutral girl myself). And have too loved a kitten wedge ballet shoe for summer, which wore to my all summer bare leg skirted outfits in the past. And long for replaceing these, which never happened as didn't find the perfect pieces again so I switched instead to tans/creams.
For nr 3-in fact I always wear a third layer when weather permits-in the biggest heat, too. So my challenge is the opposite, to let go the 3rd layer, which is hard for me as my arms are not so fit and have become sloppy shoudered...but it's easier when I have a good tan.
As for the last one with the jewelery I've become very minimal since wearing prescriptional glasses-so only wearing small studs& mywedding bands-but always loved a chunky white watch and thought it will be so for the rest of my life. Then I was gifted a smart watch for Xmass last year which has a teal rubber band-and I am in love...turns out, I am embarresed to admit that it's not about the smartness of it---really NOT AT ALL:-)- but about the perfect shade of teal rubber band-which was DH's choice by chance only! I always loved me a ruber band (found them techy and cool since they existed) so my chunky white watch has had a white rubber band too- but now I am in love with the cool teal (to my now silver apple).

Changing my bag has been the most recent change. I had been keen on it because one of my favourite colours, olive, but with the contrasting patterned guitar strap. But because I have always been lazy about my bags, I am wearing it every day (I do have a red one and a cobalt one I might change to very occasionally) even if I might have thought it would clash. And I’m happy!

Interesting. I have definitely embraced colour since participating here but for me that is a big style change. Not a small one. These are some small (easy) style changes I have made over the years which have paid big dividends for me:

*Ditching a wrist watch. I used to have one in gold, one in silver, one in rose gold. Ditching them altogether simplified accessory choices for me. Leading to my next change…
*Adopting double cuffs in summer. It’s an easy way for me to add shine, texture, and a touch of elegance. And it draws attention to my arms (which I feel are my best feature).
*Wearing different colour bags with different outfits rather than trying to make one bag (usually black) go with everything. I feel much more satisfied when the bag perfectly complements the outfit.
*Ditching heels. More modern, youthful and practical in my opinion. And flat shoes are an easy way to dress down an otherwise dressy outfit.
*Adopting cap sleeve tops in summer. Better sun protection than a tank and more modern looking and flattering than a short sleeve tee.
*Switching from shorts to skirts in summer. Feels more elegant and sooo much better for sun protection.

What a great topic, Chris!

I have definitely made use of #1. I have a mustard bag and until 2 days ago, never owned another mustard item in my life. (Recently added mustard pants.) I have also added footwear in a colour I never ordinarily wear -- fluorescent orange! I wear the sandals all the time with my blues and whites and they work brilliantly.

Re #2 -- since so much of my wardrobe is blue and white, this is a challenge! I do have some cranberry, burgundy, and other berry tones, along with the odd pops of red and these other brights. I also have some lilac items that I play with this way. But I can't really do a whole lot of experimentation in this pathway. And now, some mustard and other warm toned items (see above).
Can't always add a third piece/ topper due to weather, activity etc. (esp. in summer). But I do try to imagine "alternate" third pieces than jackets, e.g. sunnies, jewellery, a cotton or linen scarf, etc.

#4 I have not done this deliberately but it seems like a fantastic way for me to expand my colours. I will consider this. Thank you!

#5 I tend to wear the same every day jewellery and then add more (or more distinctive or obvious) jewellery when I go out. Daily I wear studs and my watch and wedding ring. Leaving the house for anything but the most casual event I will add bracelets, change out my earrings for something more distinctive, and maybe add a ring.

Nodding along with Irina- it’s amazing how changing out your shoes changes your look. If you usually wear loafers with outfit X, try sneakers for a change. If you usually wear black shoes, try a white —and let me tell you I never ever thought I’d say that. If you want a really small change, but one that makes a real difference - change your shoes laces.

I'm not sure if you're a makeup person or not, but making sure to reapply my lippie and/or trying a fresh lippie is a small detail that massively impact how I feel about my entire look.

I’m with Sal and Lisa re glasses. - I require prescription glasses and don’t like to carry both, regular and sunglasses. So, I chose transitional glasses that get darker in full sun. I also added just sunglasses. I have different shapes and colors. This adds more visual interest to my outfits.
I like to be intentional with my jewelry. This season I added some pieces in black - studs, a ring, beaded necklaces. It looks minimal and a tiny bit edgy.

My shoes are minimal in design like the rest of my wardrobe but I like to bring textures - I have mesh, patent leather, suede and cow hide shoes.

I've done everything you're considering, Chris! ;)

My eyewear is a biggie! Like Lisa and Sal I change it up a lot - with regular specs more than sunnies.

I'll add that I change my hair: wavy, straight, ponytail.

I'm a belt wearer, which changes the mood of my looks.

I'm a huge colour mixer, most of all. I think that my entire colour-rich wardrobe works with each other as long as I ground the combination in my outfit in some way.

Hi Chris

I have added bags in new colours and I agree this is a fun and relatively easy way to change up an outfit.

I also like trying different colour combinations with pieces I own, for example

Rust and lilac (I liked it more than I thought I would)
Red and yellow and navy (loved it)

I have become quite lazy with jewelry and accessories of late; I have tried scarves a few ways recently and have been taking them off after putting them on.

I am with Lisa wrt sunglasses - a great way to change up a look.

I could see a brighter colour bag working for you - maybe a burgundy or wine colour in winter, or maybe a metallic in summer?

Let us know how you get on

I wear button down shirts in all ways (tucked, untucked, buttoned, unbuttoned, tied at the waist) and find this gives the same shirt a lot of variety in how casual an outfit feels or not.

I also am a big fan of matching my handbag with shoes or belts. It helps add polish to my outfits. This also has me switching bags/footwear at least a few times a week. Sometimes I'll wear the same outfit and just change out the shoes and bag or belt, and things look completely different.

I am a big watch wearer and while I don't own many watches, I wear one every day. Sometimes I'll wear the same one for weeks at a time, other times I swap them daily with my outfits.

But I'm probably most known for my sunglasses and matching those to my outfits (black, brown, tan, red, pink, blue). I like the extra little dash of color/polish I get with sunglasses. Similar to watches sometimes I change sunglasses often, other times I'll go a few days in a row before swapping.

One thing I did last fall was try lots of different combinations with my athletic wear. Since athletic wear comes in lots of colors and I own a fair amount, it was both easy and fun to try out new color combinations. I not only got some new favorites, but I learned that matching sets in my athletic wear really helped with mixing things up.

Now matching tops and bottoms are on my shopping radar. I may not wear them together often (for example a seafoam green shirt and pants together) but having a top and bottom in the same color helps add a LOT of easy mix and matching options. It was the key to how I was able to mix up my athletic wear so easily when I did my different combinations experiment.

I'm curious about small changes folks have made in their outfits/wardrobe that made a big difference for them.

These can be things you have done, or simply ideas. Here are some ideas that I personally have considered but not done :-)

adding a daily use bag in a color/style unlike the rest of your wardrobe

wearing some new color combination with things you already have

always adding a third piece/topper

buying a small ensemble of items (in some specific vibe or color or style) that mix and match with the rest of your wardrobe

wearing a specific set of jewelry every day (or the opposite ... wearing lots of different jewelry on diff days)

TIA!
