I do agree - plaid is THE winter pattern but I struggle with it too. I quite like paisley but have one scarf only. I do like winter/dark florals and have two pieces.

I have decided texture is good too in winter - self spot or stripe, faux fur, even the shine on a puffer.... and metallic footwear is good (depending on your climate).

I like to linger in the lighting department too Unfortunately managers frown upon sitting there in a lawnchair with a glass of pineapple juice!

Kinda like making your own color fan Anywhere lighter or darker on the strip will be a good tonal match.
And its an excuse to magpie at the hardware store!

I agree, if its not a Yaaaas! then pass. If you're not stoked about them now, in the honeymoon phase, you won't feel better about them later.
It sounds funny, but to get the tonal matches you like, it could be an idea to pick up paint strips that match the berries you have-and write the items on it. At least b&m shopping you'll have an idea of what may go well.

Sterling, Angie, and Sarah, thanks for strengthening my resolve on the "maybes"!

SarahD8, I'm pretty sure it is just the fabric I mentioned, although the elastic at the bottom of the stars shirt doesn't help its case any. Good point on starter items.

Thanks Shevia, for the upvote on the pants.

Joy, sounds like a familiar path. The Asos shirt does have those nice textural stripes, so that helps.

Shevia and Sal, maybe I'll eventually know enough labels in general to be able to recognize good ones at Asos. Right now I clearly don't. The sweater is French Connection, which I thought I had seen at Nordy's.

Sal, I feel like winter is prime plaid time, and I'm rarely at home in that pattern.

I have not had good experience with the ASOS brand - quality has just not been great. They have great photos which have tempted me!! But I know others have had better success with their higher end labels.

Pattern in winter is hard - I also Would like more but don’t get there.

I agree with Sterling. You will still be wanting a top that you like better but will regret the money you spent on the top you don't like the feel of and feel you can't buy the one you like when it comes along. Winter patterns are difficult. You might na e better luck with texture.

ASOS brand itself has spotty quality in my experience. But they do sell a huge number of brands, some of which are better than others. Love the look of the plaid pants.

I agree -- if it's a maybe it's a no.

Can you identify what's off about those patterned shirts? Maybe you like horizontal stripes rather than vertical for example. Oh, or is it the material rather than the pattern? That's a bummer indeed.

It seems like the ASOS purchases will be good Fruit Salad For Right Now pieces -- even if they don't stay in your wardrobe as long as you might like, they might help tide you over on those colors.

I ordered a slew of stuff at the start of the year; most of it has gone back. I'm still trying to figure out the best combo of shades and patterns for a mix and tonally match wardrobe.

The Asos pieces were non-returnable close-outs, but that's ok because the pants fit me now, at my non-preferred size, and I've made a couple good outfits with them, and the sweater is easy to wear over a T-neck with pants. Neither is the quality I'd like; this was my first-ever Asos purchase, and will probably be my last.

I'm still brewing ideas for the red bootcuts. Return deadline for them is early April.

The two patterned tops could work with some things, but I'm ambivalent about both of them, so guess they're going back. I want more pattern in my winter wardrobe, but don't like the feel of either of these. Bummer, because the stripey shirt goes well with the bootcuts, but I doubt I'd want to wear that fabric.
