Do you usually wear your scarves with toppers? If so, could your solid toppers buttoned up well act as a stopgap whilst you buy some more solid tops?

I'm also finding the need to simplify these days - drawn to texture more than colour, but that might be due to the skies finally darkening (can't say it's winter since it's still 24C outside haha...). I don't have many patterned tops or toppers, but I like the idea of patterns as accents (on bottoms, bags, shoes etc).

I can relate! I definitely crave less fussy and more comfortable clothes. I think it does have to do with getting older and just wanting to simplify my life in general. I also love patterns, but I’ve been shifting from darker colors to brighter ones - I’m currently in love with pink, orange, and bright red.
It’s good to get your thoughts down in writing, it helps to clarify things!

Bijou, you are on the money! The Bao Bao is kinda a signature item for me now. I still use my other bags, but not as frequently, and there are many times I consider one of my “busier” bags and abandon it in favor of the Bao Bao or something easier. But I’m not being quick to get rid of the old bags yet (I have a few that have been in a holding zone/possible sell bag for a year or mor, yikes).

The Maria Cornejo pants are becoming such an item too. I’m tempted to wear them all the time!

Janet, style evolution is one of the joys of enjoying fashion for me. I have a larger wardrobe and need to edit to keep things manageable. I try to let things change gradually - a Big Bang approach does not work for me. That said, often one item sort of sets the direction and tone for me. I see the Bao Bao backpack as being a key item in your wardrobe and perhaps that has helped set this style direction for you. Being aware of the changes is often key to really enjoying a style evolution and not feeling in a rut.

Carla, it’s really smart to think of pattern and texture almost interchangeably. I like both! Today for instance, I wore no pattern, just texture. Corduroy pants, flat knit sweater, faux shearling vest, and suede boots, with a leather bag.

I do want to clarify that I’m not blindly following influencer trends — I am however, seeking out some resources that tap into a certain pull I am experiencing towards a little more simplicity and some fresh perspectives. Not a big overhaul and I certainly am not going to give up beloved prints! But refining what I already do, perhaps.

Gotta agree with Lisa, and wouldn’t want to see your cool style subsumed by Insta trends. You ‘do’ texture very well, which works if you are eschewing patterns in an outfit.

I’m not so good at texture, so depend on colour, and recently - (in your face) patterns. A couple of wildcard patterned pieces have greatly enlivened by wardrobe - so I’m doing some thinking about pattern and trying to figure out how best to use it.

Janet- Some of your dilemmas resonate. Based on your posts here, you have a baseline wardrobe that is functional, true to you, interesting and often fun to work with. Tweaking it to your current preferences makes sense.

I am up for a major closet edit and am hoping my not huge shift in perspective and accompanying restlessness will help with the purge. Having a larger wardrobe is making me aware of how important it is to not wade through the ‘almost right’ pieces to get to the best for me now ones. It is part of an overall wish to simplify things, too.

I also find myself drawn to and sometimes seduced by prints. They will always play a role in my wardrobe, I am now adding up what factors allow me to enjoy a print over time as I can tire of them too quickly and zeroing in on that has been helpful. Abstract prints with a clear ‘mood’ work best for me. When I choose more based on ‘those are my colors, kind of like the pattern, and that will be good for pairing toppers and pants’, not so much. Seems obvious, but I’m about to ditch some tops I don’t reach for.

I am with you on both ease and proportion, perhaps a function of age, lifestyle and hopes for a bit of flattery in an outfit. It’s all process. Thanks for the references to the videos; I’m going to check them out.

Have to say how much I love those MC pants and their wonderful silhouette. You wear them so well!

Enjoy NYC and your wardrobe evolution.

It’s a funny thing with the fit of clothes - some people just look so good in oversized or body con clothes. And it’s not always measurements/size/height
- it’s the face shape and proportions and essence of the person.

Yes! I totally agree, Lisa. I pick and choose what resonates with me from inspirations like Amy S. I love my patterned scarves and will 100% choose those over a sweater tied around my body, for example. And I have definitely eased up on my requirements for traditional flattery, but I still know my thresholds for what feels too avant garde or seems more wacky on me than cool. Body type does play a part — some things that look super cool on a straight body type just don’t translate on me, and I’m more ok with that now than I used to be.

In terms of some style cues moving forward right now, I’m taking a cue (at least for bottoms) from two of my favorite new items of the past year: my black cargo joggers (Sanctuary) and my Zero & Maria Cornejo pants. Both span the seasons better than jeans ever did for me (denim is too hot in summer here), and they have ease but also enough balance of edge and refinement. I wore the Cornejo pants with my black metallic V neck sweater and patent boots to a holiday party last night and felt just right. I love that feeling and am learning to go with it!

When I do some loose or slightly oversized item, I need to pair it with something more structured or slim to feel like myself. I know pretty well by now when I go too far in one direction or another (too fitted, too classic, too trendy, too roomy) and can usually quickly dial in the right correction for myself.

Much as I’ve been inspired by your personal style, beauty and openness over the years, Janet, I’ve also been thinking about your original post for a couple of days, and what drives us to move towards a style shift. There are so many possibilities — a change in body, a change in locale, a change in physical sensitivities, or perhaps it’s not even a change that requires a shift, but it is a matter of personal aesthetics, or even in personal aspirations.

The aspirations are almost the trickiest possibility, because that’s how we open ourselves up most to self-criticism. Instagram and the like don’t really help. Angie’s style wisdom is more practical than most of what we see on instagram, and if I were to distill it, I would say it comes down to “know yourself” and make choices accordingly. (She may well disagree with this.)

But what if you aspire to be someone different? Or at least aspire to look somewhat different?

Here’s a little rant. It’s a bit off topic, but you brought up the fashion person in question. Like you, I think Amy Smilovic and Alison Bornstein look fabulous. I’m impressed by Smilovic, running her own business, coming up with classes and color wheels and new seasons of clothes and calling all of it pragmatic. I like how she’s not overly made up, that you can see her unfiltered age is in her videos, and that she has an interesting personal charisma. And according to her self description, she and I are approximately the same height and clothing size. So that in itself gives me a little aspiration. Maybe I could be that cool girl. But you know what: a couple of my worst-ever purchases have been oversize items from Tibi that I saw her wearing. We all have to know what works for us. She’s got it down. So I keep reminding myself: you don’t like the way you look in anything that makes your torso look wide and blocky. Oversize blazers do that. You like the way you look in clothes that highlight the parts of your body that you most like: giant pants and skirts don’t do that. And I’m never going to be “pragmatic” enough to own my own fashion company and yet wear a sweater in a weird knot around my neck when I could design and produce an easier scarf, or roll up my waistband like an inner tube around my middle when I could just create a skirt that adjusts to different lengths with a snap hem or a drawstring to create ruching.

Please stick with the beautiful patterns. (That sweater you just posted is the perfect pattern for you, but I know what you mean about mock necks)

Kkards, oh yes — shoes. Yesterday I ran out to the grocery store in my very old turquoise cowboy boots (I was wearing wide leg jeans and pointed toe boots look good with that style). I was wearing those for maybe two hours max and my left foot was killing me by the time I took them off. I put on my patent croc booties for a party last night and wore them comfortably for hours! So it’s a little surprising to me what is no longer working for my feet — you’d think the lower heel of the cowboy boot would be fine, but for some reason it’s not any longer. They’re going into my sell pile.

I’m also finding that I’m finding myself attracted to things/colors that I haven’t worn in a while. Also leaning more and more into casual and easy fit…I still love jeans, but finding more and more that I reach for athleisure bottoms. I think it’s a combination of my lifestyle, working from home a days a week, and very casual surroundings.
And 100% nodding along with ‘I’m also more sensitive to how things *feel* than I used to be’. for me this is both fit and fabric. If gotten rid of a couple of sweaters than just don’t “hang” right, and shoes just aren’t comfortable enough anymore.

This has been a very thought provoking thread, thanks for starting it Janet.

I like your term "ease" as it seems to encompass so much of what you are talking about, not just a slightly roomy cut but also comfortable fabric, lack of fussiness, right color and details (so you don't have to *work* to make it work), etc. I very much identify with the need for ease in all senses in my wardrobe. If I'm at home working or puttering around what's the point of being uncomfortable? And if I'm out, well, I want to have my full focus on whatever the event is.

I myself am in a more maximalist phase, both in terms of pattern (and pattern mixing!) and wardrobe size. I do relate to what you are saying about being drawn to certain prints or colors but needing to make sure all the other details are right. There are a lot of fair isle garments, as well as things in a particular shade of dark blue-violet, that have cycled into and out of my wardrobe as I learned that lesson.

Oh, these responses are great! So glad to know I am in good company with some of my shifting needs and preferences.

Don’t get me wrong - I have always loved and worn prints and will continue to do so! But I have plenty now that I love. I need to wear them and not get more for a while. And I need to be honest with myself about items that are a great print…but otherwise not great for me, like a too fussy cut or an off fit. The sweater I tried in Anthro recently is a good example — a print I adore but a neckline that I have learned that I struggle to wear (Pic below).

On the other hand, when I find those brilliant perfect-for-me color solid items, I also need to be super picky. I ordered a cashmere sweater from Nordstrom that is a beautiful vibrant cobalt blue — one of my favorites — and hemmed and hawed on it because it felt just a little itchy trying it on. Not bad, but enough that I felt *aware* of the sensation of the fabric in a way that I strongly suspect will only get worse after wearing it for an hour or more. Out of an abundance of caution, I packed it in a bag to return next time I’m out doing errands. There will be other fab cobalt sweaters.

I didn’t address the print aspect but I am perhaps even more attracted to prints now than I was when younger. I’m late 40s now. I have always been into plaid and stripes and certain florals or paisleys etc … but now I am really attracted to hectic prints and combos like the Farm Rio brand. I tend to do patterns more on top than bottom but I do both.

Interesting to see what adjustments to your style will you do. You have such an eye for color combinations in prints but it’s no wonder, you are an artist. I think if you stay with less conventional prints, you will be able to enjoy them without going overboard.

I’m in a mood for some changes, too. Got rid of too small wide leg cropped jeans and pants. Looking for shorter sweaters and less oversized tops. I still enjoy oversized fit but tame it a bit.

Just nodding my head to wanting comfort in your knits. I have sadly had to pass on all wool and cashmere for at least the last decade. it’s a real loss - especially when it comes to colors. Also acrylics are hit and miss.

The only time I go to TJ Maxx is when I am shopping for winter sweaters and turtlenecks. Rayon and viscose and spandex are my friends… some polyesters too. Unfortunately I find these sweaters wear out faster - I try to find at least a couple each year.

I am nodding with so much of this, but will focus on one thing: what is it with the sensitive skin change I’m feeling also?

It’s a combination of needing soft, or smooth if crisper, and cushiony. Yet I’m not having any rash-y or sensitive issues with lotions or cosmetics or anything

For example, I got rid of a classic waffle- weave Henley shirt because the “ waffle” felt too rough, & even felt the same in ones that were billed as super soft. I can still wear some merino & cashmere, but over- duplicated a VC acrylic- bend sweater style last year and the acrylic knit is annoying me. That’s probably a no- brainer, just No to acrylic, whereas I can wear poly fleeces ok. For some of these things I can underlayer, but don’t always want to, because, can be too confining.

I find a lot of rayon fabrics ARE comfortable. Some cottons feel too rough.

At TJMAXX I found a Vince LS tee in a Pima- modal blend that just feels divine if it’s true brand and not a lower- tier made for certain markets , I think it’s about $100 usually and the thing that is saving me is it doesn’t come in much actual colors. Plus I’m tying to focus on having “ one”.

And socks! Many just feel too rough. I want something smooth but also a bit spongy, like some bamboo blends. Some of my Smartwools feel too harsh now .

And adding in another, yes to get more leery of prints by face. I’ve always had more solids but some days I wonder if I need any print at all. So, scarves were oftbought because of luscious print yet I’m reaching for some solid deep lavender, perfect taupe, medium berries in solids, when before I’d seek out combinations of these.

I find I’m wearing fewer prints near my face, although I still love them in my skirts.

A couple of years ago, when I was doing my DIY tie dye thing, I did some long sleeve tie dye tops. I quite liked them but found them not very useful. There is only a short period of the year in which I’d wear a long sleeve top without a jumper/knit over it for warmth. So kind of no point having lots of interesting printed long sleeve tops for only occasional wear. Solid colours are way more practical. So I too have to rein myself in.

I’m not seeing a lots of prints here this Summer. And the more busy, ditsy prints seem to be gone. So maybe there is a swing back toward colour blocking.

I’m seeing lots of oversized pants and jackets here, which I like. But I’m also seeing lots of long fitted skirts and dresses, which I’m not so keen on. Besides the usual challenges of wearing body con clothing, it just seems not that practical for Summer. Sigh.

Yes can relate. The easiest first - my skin has definitely become much more sensitive as I get older and things I once wore without a thought are no gos these days.
Regarding prints, I still like them but have become more and more particular. I think prints are very individual - both a matter of taste and a matter of how they interact with your particular appearance.
I do advocate for saving things that are good quality and condition (if you have storage space) rather than getting rid of them completely. We are all influenced by the zeitgeist (quiet luxury et al) and the season along with other things, and you might find yourself in the mood for those prints again. For example, I am moving back toward slimmer legged pants (not skinny, but slim) and am glad this really just means digging them out.
Your keywords still sound right - the trick is in the implemenation. I also am a fan of Alison Bornstein btw!

Without pictures, it’s hard to envision the new style. But I recall your basic style.

What I bet would help is asking yourself…can I throw it on easily, like a favorite tee? And can I move around easily, like I would in a favorite tee? That ease seems important. All other details fall into place more easily once you have that down.

Also maybe imagining you’re dressing for a casual event, like hanging out at a friend’s house. That way, your scarf doesn’t have to perfectly match, etc. More looseness…people always tell me I look great when I’m throwing on an outfit running out the door.
