These pants look really good on you! I also wanted to say that AJ is amazing with her styling advice, and that I agree with Vix, in that the colour might not be quite right for your style and wardrobe. That said - the colour does look really neat - it's just that it might be hard to work into your wardrobe and style. I think AJ's totally onto something with keeping it a bit more monochromatic, and I can see from her photo-shopping/collage-ing, that she's found some items you've posted before that will look great with these new pants.

These pants look fab. I mean, they look really, really good. It's just that the colour might be a bit hard to work with, even though I love looking at this colour and I love the idea of this colour. Meanwhile, after seeing Isis' slouchy pants thread, I'm also convinced that tucking might be important when it comes to slouchy pants.

There is also something else to maybe consider. I might be totally off the mark here, but it's just an idea. I'm thinking that when you wear an item that is just a bit more fashion-forward (ie. slouchy pants), then the colour might need to be a bit more neutral or toned down in some way. Likewise, you can sort of 'punch up' classics by choosing a colour that's outside the norm. This is what makes those Halogen skirts look so great - it's a classic shape, but the colours really add 'oomph.'

I'm thinking of Annabybe and her minty skinny pants - the colour was totally new, but the skinny pants were pretty much 'classic' (I'm assuming that skinny jeans/pants are now classic). It was the colour that made the pants look so fresh and new.

In the case of slouchy pants, I think it's the shape that makes them 'new' and fashion-forward, and adding strong colour to the mix might make it a little bit harder to come up with outfits.

All of that said though - I can kind of see these slouchy, bright pink pants with very simple and neutral blouses, jackets and toppers. I mean, what if you were to wear these amazing pink slouchy pants with an extremely simple navy silk button-down type shirt, with the sleeves rolled up? Or a grey, close-fitting knit top of some kind?

These pants look great and they fit you well - it's just that when you combine the slouchy aspect plus the colour, they're just a bit hard to style, is all. This doesn't mean you don't keep them - it's a matter of deciding if you want to hang onto them because they're wonderful, even if they're "high maintenance".

You have some fab-looking, but somewhat 'high maintenance' pants here :)

Laughing a little bit, because I think it's true.

This reminds me of Angie's gorgeous grey dotted skirt skirt - and how she had to hobble along a wee bit until she found just the right shoes. It was a 'high maintenance' (sitting) skirt until she found something that made it much more wearable. Amazing skirt, and totally worth the hassle in terms of finding the right items to wear it with.

I think these pink slouchy pants might be like that. Really fab, and they look great on you - just that they require a bit more fuss/work/styling than other items might.

Just some food for thought. They really do look good on you, so don't worry - it's just the styling and fuss-factor, is all.

I think that the silhouette is good, but the color not so much. My advice is to stay patient and not settle. When you find the perfect pant, buy it in multiple colors!

You all are amazing. There are so many helpful points in this thread! I need to review it frequently on my quest.

The pink may be what's throwing me off, but I think it's also that I want more of the androgynous "British schoolboy slouching nonchalantly against a fencepost" vibe, if that makes any sense (rather than the 80s "Working Girl" look). Isis posted a totally fab pair today in black.

I think these pink ones will be going back since the cuffs can't be changed, but I'm learning with every step.

As for the color, I am loving the idea of pretending like neon is a neutral. I would either do other bright colors (what clashes with hot pink? NOTHING!), or sedate, conservative neutrals light beige and navy.

Just so you know, the problem with slouchy pants on me is that they don't slouch everywhere. If I buy them so they are blousy in the leg they are literally 4 sizes too big. In my size the pleats (if there are any) stick straight out and the fabric pulls at the thigh. Now THAT is a nightmare! But, I LOVE the look and think these are pretty great. They'll look even better once you've styled them, and AJ got a start on that for you. (-: Can't wait to see what you come up with...

I really like these pants - except for the color. I'm having a hard time picturing you staying true to your UWP persona with this bright pink color. The color itself isn't bad - but i think the combination of the color with the style is what is throwing me off.

I have no idea how to style these. I have a pair of gray ones and a pair of black ones that I bought several years ago, and I've never worn them because I don't know what to wear on top! So, I will be watching this thread withh interest!

I'm really confused looking at the pictures and reading your post.... I feel like the pants fit you really well and they are actually about as flattering as this style gets. Maybe this is one of those styles where you give up what's "flattering" to wear something that is "trendy." And maybe that's ok in this case. I honestly think these look good on you, though this style is really not for me. I am having a knee jerk "no way in hell" reaction to this entire slouchy pleated pants trend but surprisingly I am not hating these on you.

I have deliberately not read any of the other replies so that I can give my honest feedback without any other influences.

Man Una...do I HEAR you about the whole slouchy pant messing with your head thingy! It's a really tough silhouette to feel good in I've discovered. Even if technically the pants fit, you have to get your head around the extra bits of fabric here and there due to the style. I've finally come to love my pants (I better have since I've ripped the tags off and they're at the tailor's getting shortened!) but I seriously had to look in the mirror at myself many, many times in them to get over my fear...and that's what made me pause with them. Fear of a new silhouette and style. So ends my Dr. Phil moment.

Now on to these particular pants on you - they fit you beautifully at the waist and crotch (sorry for staring at your crotch - lol!) but I'm not sure they're long enough. A little bit of scrunch at the ankles really makes the pants flow nicely down the legs. The cuff on the bottom looks in the wrong spot to my eyes. Dianthus bought a pair of slouchy cuffed pants when we were shopping and the cuff worked at the bottom for her because the pants are cropped and slim, showing her ankle and bottom part of her calf. If there were no cuff on yours or they were slightly longer, I think they'd be a 10. However...I would love to see a few pics with them styled with different footwear and see if that can change the ankle of the pant - does that make any sense?

I do think they look terrific on you though and you (and I) need to stop beating ourselves up. New silhouettes can take a toll on her opinions of ourselves. And frankly if I had been trying on bathing suits, I'd still be in bed crying!

I can't help but chime in here! Obviously I like them, so I'm not impartial about the pants themselves.
But Una, are you crazy? They look fabulous on you! The fit couldn't be any more perfect, and as everybody has said, you have the right body to wear them. (way more than me, but I like mine anyway!)

Gray would be cool with them, as Denise said (I'm going to see what I have so I can try that), I happen to be partial to black with them, as you know. Your striped top and cropped black jacket from AJ's mock-up would look great, too. I don't think you need to tuck- or at least I don't plan to with mine, because they just don't look that great on me that way.
I think it does look better not to have too long a top over them, though, so that you don't cover up *too* much of the pleats.

Girl, throw on your highest heels and style them right, and you will rock them like nobody's business!

So in the same vein as 'can't see the forest for the trees,' I think this is a case of can't see the greatness of the trousers for the outfit? Styling is key for almost every garment. It can be a treasure, but paired with unfriendlies can totally damage the vibe.

I vote for you to rock these!! I think this color, drape and fit look incredible on you.

Great collage work, AJ!

Una, before I recuse myself on the grounds that I think this silhouette is a huge PITA to work with, let me ask:

are you sure about the pink against your Urban Warrior Princess style preference?

You know with your coloring I love you in brights, but with this pants shape the femininity of the pink seems to be eclipsing the urban and warrior part -- and as others have said styling can only do so much given the sheer amount of fabric.

I know you like a menswear influence, but I'm thinking that's more Cary Grant like the grey ones posted within the thread. Again as said upthread, with your shape I think you can take a lot of volume/slouch in pants but maybe these aren't the one?

For me bright pants work better for you in the slim cuts you have. [Which sort of makes no sense, so I'm trying to backtrack from the intuitive to the "why IS that?"]

Just a thought. Though I also think this pair sits up too high on your waist and/or drops too low in the rise. /exiting stage left

Ha. It's interesting about the small hips. I never would think of slouchy pants for myself--unlike Una with her flat stomach, I am an apple gone insane. But let's say the big belly was removed from the equation, supposedly I'd be able to wear them as an inverted triangle with very small hips. But OTOH, I like my (relatively/proportionately) small, lean thighs and lower legs, and this is one look that definitely masks that. Longwinded way of saying, I doubt this look would ever be for me. I can definitely see how challenging it is for anyone. That should make us all feel better for not just slapping on a pair of slouchy trousers and having it work.

I haven't read through the other comments, but my immediate response would be, don't sweat it too much. Slouchy pants are tricky. I think of anybody, you probably have the bod for them, because I think they require narrow hips.

I don't think those pink pants look totally dreadful on you, and there is an element of "slouchy pants don't photograph well" there too, because they don't have a defined shape and they're bright pink so you can't really see the shadows that define where the fabric drapes. And the whole point of slouchy pants is that they should drape nicely. But they are still not my favourite. My opinion isn't totally to be trusted, mind you, because I might have a slight poison eye for the look -- I always prefer pants that are more fitted at the waistline.

I can only echo the feeling the feeling that the pants fit you correctly but I see you in a more subdued color and more low slung around those narrow hips of yours. Or to go with a higher paperbag waist as Diana mentioned. It is a tough style to pull off but after seeing how you rock plaid pants I know there is a perfect pair waiting if you are PPP.

The fit is almost identical to the awesome gray ones you posted earlier (the ones AJ has posted within the thread), so I'm just not seeing the fit issues. The only thing is the hot pink--will you wear that color? I really liked Parsley's look with the white jacket and black top, but are you going to be able to come up with enough outfits that work with the pink pants to justify keeping them? (I say this because I know I would not be able to, in all likelihood.) Black, white, and gray are no-brainers, but other combos might be challenging. Just my two cents.

Hi there!
I gotta say AJ is a genius!!! I love her collage thingies:)
Anyhow, after reading all comments, I think I'm on the Mochi school of thought, with inclusion of all of her disclaimers.

I am the same way, I would not give up on a style until I find something that works for me. I would start with trying this pant style in a dark color, then take it from there.

If you are sold in the color, I would keep it reeeeally simple on top. What about a fitted turtleneck, a blouse with a clean front ( no bow, pockets, etc) or a simple tee? I would avoid patterns too, do a solid top. You definitely need heels.

I'm with christieann about the style and fit -- I think this is how they are supposed to look. I must confess I am having a very hard time getting past my poisoned eye for this style. I think we moved away from it years ago for good reason. It is very challenging to create a truly figure-flattering look with this style of pants on all but the slimmest women. As someone who usually counts figure flattery above trendiness, I guess I feel like I need to represent the minority of YLFers who cannot jump up and down in glee over this trend.

However, Una, i think your IT build makes you a great candidate for this look, and you pull it off as well as anyone. I'm with Mochi in that I'm not a big fan of the color, and I also suspect the waist is a bit high, as Deborah points out. But the fit looks right otherwise.

Sorry to be so ambivalent. I seem to be working out my personal feelings about this style while also trying to give you some honest feedback, so I'm sorry if I'm muddying the waters a bit.

I think these actually fit you very well and the slouch factor is just about right. I personally prefer some more scrunch at the ankle.

This is also going to sound kind of counterintuitive (MORE volume???), but I actually like slouchy pants with a paperbag waist + belt rather than the flat, trouser-style front you have here. They have to be properly drapey and not stiff for this look though.
ETA: I'm wearing my slouchy clams today... just posted my WIW if you want to see what I mean.

I think the fit is great on you - but I am really liking the slouchy trousers this season. I also like the bright color - oh to have narrow hips. *sigh*

I do think that having either a tucked top or a shorter top with this type of pant elongates the legline and improves the look.

I also like the idea of tonal dressing or even color blocking with another bright.

I think they look really good on you and honestly can't see why you don't. Very strange because it usually takes me until a trend is almost over to see its beauty.

Una, I think the trousers are killer on you.

A couple of things I have learned from styling my slouchy trousers:
*I don't like to wear a tight top, I like a slightly looser top tucked to create a slight blouson. I think your high low UWP top will look amazing.
*I like my slouchy trousers with flats as much as heel so experiment with all of your footwear (your house slippers are way cooler than mine)

In your first photo the red of the top is throwing me, I think if it was an even cooler toned piece it would look insanely good.

As a side note...swimwear shopping paralyzes most women with fear. I always remember being at the beach and how, when there, I do not have the hottest bod but I'm not the worst either. I know you would be the same.

All sorts of disclaimers about not being up on slouchy pants theory, mechanics, and being a very beginning-level stylist in general. Okay, that said now, it seems to me that with all their inherent comPlications as well as the increased acreage they take up (use more fabric in other words--NOT a comment on a wearer) this is one style where avoiding a glaring color and toning down with something like grey, olive, etc would neutralize some of the trickiness of styling and wearing them. I really feel the pink is overwhelming, and can't even look past it. My two cents. I think there's a pair out there for you, absolutely.

Una I think the fit looks really good, but my question here is should the waist band actually sit lower. The pants are sitting very high in the photo and I recall Angie commenting that these pants look good kind of slung lower on the hips.

I think if you just follow the same formula as you did in that killer outfit that I referred to earlier. The tucked in top shows the slouchiness but the jacket minimizes the high waist effect, but keep all the pieces low contrast.

Ah, such great suggestions and AJ, you are just amazing. Those cut and paste thingies of yours are priceless!

These were actually ankle length on Parsley and didn't appear to have any scrunch on her. I like the cuff as it gives a little bulk; one problem with the AT pants was that the narrow tapered leg was too much of an ice-cream cone effect somehow, even with some scrunch.

Is wearing untucked tops with slouchy pants undermining the point of them by covering up the slouch? If not, that would be the obvious solution since I hate tucking!

I remember wearing pants like these in the 80s, but this time around I'd so like to get them right. The slouchy silhouette really calls to me as I'm really not into fitted looks - the perfect;y cut slouchy pants have been a lifelong quest. I thought bright color would work better for pants I could wear to work (per my MaryK moment!).

I'm off to my friend''s place out of town for the weekend, to help her daughter get ready for prom... a good way to take my mind off my slouchy misery for a while. Thank you for bearing with me on this thus-fruitless quest!

AJ, I love your piecing together of outfits I think the slouch pants fit you well Una. Like Manidipa, though, I'm wondering about the proportions you're seeing in the outfit and if that is throwing you off.
