Thanks, Marilyn. I will try with coarse sandpaper, that is a great suggestion.

I sometimes use coarse sandpaper to ruff up the soles of slippery shoes.

You are right about that, Eliza, that is why I paid extra, in order to walk safely.
It seems that is needed these days when most manufacturers use the cheapest soles available to them.
Some high-end booties with proper soles may not be a bad idea after all.

Adding the protective soles at a local cobbler is $40-$45 and I have done so with several pairs of leather soled booties. They add to the cost, but also increase safety and longevity in my often wet climate. The shoemaker does a great job and the helpful addition doesn't impact appearance. Makes the most sense when you can't safely walk without them or you have invested in a great shoe and want to get optimal "mileage".

You are right, Thistle, from now on I will factor in the cobler's price, too.
He charged me 45 which I think was pricey. They will go back to him tomorrow so that he can hammer in those nails properly. Right now they are not well hammered and they scratch the floors.

I am with Una. The stick on ones are basically worthless. Even if they don't peel off, they do little. The floors where I work are always slippery.

And yeah, I hear ya on it being pricey. It costs $35 here +tax to resole a shoe by me.

I guess it is too much to ask makers to put decent soles on to start with. Or some makers. This is now part of my decision process when I keep a shoe. Is it worth another $35 for soles if they aren't already grippy.

Thanks for commiserating with me, Suz.
AG, I need to go to your cobbler...
Yes, that's what I was afraid of, that the self-help ones would come off easily.

My cobbler charges $20 to attach very thin lug soles which I do with all my shoes. Sorry to hear it can be pricey! The stick on ones are horrible - the ones I tried peeled right off.

I think you can just get stick on rubbery bottom things...what a pain, though. And I am not sure they last as well as those done at the cobbler's.

My Pettys are actually leather soled (I think?) but I have the python print ones, not the suede. They were a bit slippy at the start, though, anyway, but a bit of scuffing has helped. I've had other booties done at the cobbler as you did and it cost me a fair bit also.

Thanks, Carter, I will check those rubber liners out. Some reasonably priced ones may save my brown booties indeed.
Kelly, it sounds like the twist technique worked for you. I will keep that in mind.
Firecracker, sorry to ruin them for you.
Angie, I did have the suede Pettys re-soled but it cost me almost half of what the shoes cost and the cobbler did not put the nails in straight... And this was the good cobbler that I have been going to for years.

That's too bad about the slippery soles. I shouldn't have followed your link; I see they come in a beautiful bone color, which might go with my new light colored wool trousers. I just need to back away from the computer until I forget about those.

I haven't noticed this with the Pettys. I usually try to scuff my my soles on the slate outside before wearing them out. I do the twist on the rough surface and it seems to give them a little more traction. Will be careful though. Thanks!

I was very happy with my Sam Edelman Petty booties in black suede and wide width until I stepped on a recently cleaned floor and it felt like an ice skating rink! The soles are synthetic and I had to take them to the cobler to get rubber soles on which raised the total cost of the shoes by a considerable amount.
Initially I liked the shoes so much that I duplicated them in dark brown, those are unused and are going back unless I find a really cheap cobbler or unless I can talk the store manager into fixing them for me... I doubt that but I will give it a try nevertheless.
So, for all of you ladies with the pretty Sam Edelman Petty booties, thread with care when you find yourselves on wet floors. Or add rubber soles, like I did.
