Love the look on you and the sewing pattern of the new skirt, as well. Think the fornt seam is great and the slit is just the right height-no too revealing-and I strongly advice against sewing it without a slit-I hate that much of covernig on legs-can feel very matronly or old fashioned-and walking can be difficult, too. I always tapper my skirts from hips downt, even if just a so called non-signifficant tad-but, for me it makes all the difference especially in a midi. (kind of remember Suz was doing the same trick years ago with her skirts for a better fit..-even if some cm...)

I echo everyone else, Ket! You look amazing in BOTH of these skirts!

Columned skirts that glide over your fab curves - and fit correctly - are your friend! A thick knitted skirt with heft will fit better. A woven skirt with lining that is not on the bias but skims your figure will fit well too.

I echo Brooklyn regarding the slit. A front slit can be problematic. Front and side is safer and less fussy to deal with.

You look good in slim skirts. They both look fab. Good stylings!

I have a rounded tummy and do prefer a bit more heft for skirt fabric, IE not too clingy. I also think a slight taper should be better than straight up and down, but in the wrong fabric it then emphasises my tummy even more. I have skirts like this and wear them with slightly longer tops to cover the part that bugs me.

I agree with BROOKLYN about being careful with a front centre slit. I've had bad experiences with those and tend to avoid them.

I’m just here to say that everything about #1 is fab, the skirt, but also the excellent styling which highlights a number of Angie’s trends from (#22 relaxed glamour, #14 novelty slogans,#2 80s/00s inspired are the ones I see). Anyway I was just thinking how much styling impacts how we think something works or doesn’t.

I think slim skirts look excellent on you. The chiffon one in particular.

I am very curvy and find I can wear straight and tapered long slim skirts. But bias cuts are difficult. I have a couple but I kind of regret them. They seem to put strong emphasis on the hips.

With the skirt you propose to make, I’d just watch the slit placement and whether that results in any issues when sitting. Those sort of slits work better on the side or back for me.

I love the chiffon skirt on you. And I am 100% with Sal on the idea that (for me at least) either flared or tapered in works so much better than straight. I think you and I have agreed that jean shapes are similar for us -- i.e. either wide or a real flare at the bottom, or slim tapered work best. I think the heavy knit could be your friend, or possibly a double layer of knit. I remember the tube skirts I used to adore were double layered jersey knit.

Ket, I agree the chiffon skirt is super fab on you. The knit skirt suffers by comparison, but it looks good on you, too. I think you've identified important details that make the difference here. The pattern you've chosen looks really promising to me; I love a front seam on a column skirt, as it really amplifies the long line. I would look for a ponte knit that has some heft to it but also still has the give/stretch that you want. You're going to rock this skirt!

I think those all look great on you. Great with the slouchy tops, and a variety of footwear.

I am also an hourglass, and pencil skirts are one of my best silhouettes. They are also one of the hardest for me to wear. A tailored one takes a life of its own and bunches up all around my waist, everywhere except where it is supposed to go. But I did find this one a few months ago, which is very easy because it is a sturdy stretch. Like a skirt made of Spanx, but easier to get on and off.

I'm no help. I like both of the skirts the way you have them styled here and would vote for sewing another one of either style in a fabric you'd enjoy wearing for summer.

I love these skirts on you. I think it’s a good silhouette.

For me I like either tapered in or flaring out/bias/ trumpet style. Straight from the hips down would be harder to style on me.

The weight of the fabric will be key - some stretch but not too much.

Look forward to seeing how it goes!

This is the knit skirt I'm thinking of sewing.

With the caveat: I would shape it more like the chiffon skirt. So, not just a straight tube, but some curve through hip.

Use a medium-weight knit fabric that has a good blend of structure and stretch.

I adore every one of Angie’s slim skirt examples in her latest post. This fringe trend feels like a flashback to 2012-2014 for me. I used to wear a slim, tapered pencil skirt with an oversized, slouchy top a TON. Loved it. I remember J.Crew and even Anthropologie did a lot of slim skirt/pencil skirts paired with slouchy and layered tops.

I wouldn’t mind trying it again. I’ve always felt I looked better in a slimmer skirt versus fuller skirt shapes tbh. Not sure why. I’m an hourglass/figure 8. The advice is generally fuller skirts with waist definition.

Anyhoots.

How do I (or you!) style a column/tube/slim skirt with a curvy body and flatter, wider derrière?

I really like my chiffon skirt. It's really flattering on me. The cut is excellent. I'm not sure if it's actually bias cut, but it's got excellent shape though hips then gently tapers a bit toward ankle.

My ruched knit tube skirt feels less flattering, even though I like it. It could very easily be due to fabrication and cut. The fabric is a thin rayon-spandex jersey knit. It has a thin knit lining but that's not enough to make up being thin fabric. It also is cut very straight. It doesn't have the curvier cut and shape of the chiffon skirt. Ruching just can't make up for that.

So... should I sew/buy a knit skirt that's curved through the hip and then gently tapered? Maybe with medium weight jersey knit? Is that the key to me finding a slim jersey skirt I love?

Knits/jersey just feels so much easier right now, especially with summer getting close. A woven fabric feels more structured but also less "pull-on and go" IYKWIM.
