Best to be prepared in my opinion.&nbsp;</p> <p>A quick thought on shopping strategies: it sounds like we have similar preferences, and yes, it completely breaks down when searching out specifics. If you're on a tight budget, I recommend Uniqlo. They're not exactly independent, but their quality is generally very good for the price.&nbsp;</p> <p>Otherwise it's a treasure hunt. There are some good outlets and consignment shops in your neighbourhood. I did consider 1 too, then thought it a bit too fluid or casual. But I could use a tee like that. I liked 3 most of all the tops on the model but even in a size down I think the peplum would still start too low on my body and draw focus to my widest point. Thanks to those who, like me, thought the polo looked quirky in a good way. I have honestly never worn a polo in my life but thhis one caught my eye. However, it doesn’t look good tucked and I feel the straight cut does my hips no favors. I like tops #1 and #4, too bad #5 is poly because that's totally the kind of tank that's super for a hot day. You might still be able to find one like that in cotton or woven rayon. If #3 is a fabric you like and available in a size down I think that's worth trying too. I'm a real sucker for that dusty sage green (I think you've said you are too), and it looks like the printed top in #4 has hints of that colour too. And that stripy polo -- omg. Not conventionally flattering or trend-of-the-moment, but very quirky and cute, nerdy-cool like Greenjeans says. I think any of those could be keepers. I have a top that is almost identical to #2 but perhaps a bit more tailored. I almost always wear it semi-tucked, so you might want to give that a try. I find that lightweight blousy fabrics like that need to be "tamed" a bit.&nbsp;</p> <p>Oh, and I totally know that feeling of saving up for something perfect only to find it's sold out by the time I'm ready to purchase. That's part of why I hang out here -- Angie is so good at reminding us all to shop pre-season and really plan out our needs/wants. If it weren't for some external discipline, I would probably just drift aimlessly through the clearance racks at the end of the season, with a list of all the things I wished I'd had *during* the season!</p> <p>Also -- you really have a good handle on your colour palette. The past years I culled and did not replace some polyester tops that had not been worn for ages. Of course, this year seems to bring heat wave after heat wave. I wanted to buy some new professional looking layering tops that work on their own too - but it’s been hard this late in the season to find stuff… Remember that new brand I discovered and loved? Everything I liked and was saving up for: gone. Maybe you recall I prefer shopping at independent boutiques? Turns out to be useless when looking for something specific at this time of year.</p> <p>So I went to an online department store, looked at ALL the tops in my size and color palette, and ordered a bunch to try.</p> <p>What a disappointment.</p> <p>Of course, it’s very obvious that some of these are too large. But what with weird oversize cuts I don’t even think sizing down would fix it.</p> <p>I’m only considering keeping no. 4, a short sleeve shirt in a very thin cotton (voile?) which might be flexible enough for regular AND hot days. I like the color and style of 5 but the polyester remains a dealbreaker. (Styling is always the same as I’d like something to go specifically with these pants.)</p> <p>I also added a couple of pictures with custom finds, of additional tops I consider ordering from different sources.</p> <p>Or: I can just suck it up for the rest of the season with a very small hot weather capsule and some creativity, instead of replacing stuff I don’t really like with stuff that’s barely better … And make an early start on summer tops next year.</p> <p>Thoughts? </p>
