For t-shirts, my fave is the Lululemon Love Crew. https://shop.lululemon.com/p/t.....color=0001

Reasons:
- really nice neckline on me. I have slightly sloping shoulders and a neckline that’s just a little lower is good. They also have this in a v-neck version.

- curved bottom seam on both front and back. Flattering.

- mostly cotton with some Lycra. It feels nice. Not too slinky and not too stiff.

Note that the white is see-through.

I don't mind sleeveless tops but keep them for the hottest weather as I get too cold if my shoulders are uncovered, especially in AC. I'm with the short sleeve wearers most of the time, short and angled is best and I am always on the lookout for cute tees that are a little special. I have tried longer sleeves in hot weather but just can't do it - I need the air to cool off. Same with shorts, I know they aren't very flattering as I have aged but they are the coolest so I wear them.

In theory I love sleeveless tops/ dresses however in reality I really don't . I keep buying them and not wearing as my arms are less then flattering these days. I'm keeping some but only to wear into the fall with some kind of a topper. When will I learn ??

I fond sleeveless shirts uncomfortable. Like Angie, I run cold in AC and hate the feeling of the sun beating down on my exposed shoulders. As many retailers don’t seem to expect these preferences, shopping for hot summers (temperatures in the 100+/40+ range) can be tough.

Lightweight J. Crew button ups and popovers, with the sleeves rolled up or folded above the elbow, have often worked for me.

This year I found a couple of fantastic linen/cotton woven tops at Madewell with a lot of visual interest. I’ll definitely check there again in future summers.

I also found some lightweight short-sleeved tees with a knot detail at LOFT. In general I try to avoid jersey knits as much as possible in summer because I find them less breezy than a woven cotton.

most days, unless the temp is going to be really hot, i wear long sleeves...i hate being cold and its easier to roll/push a sleeve up....these days there's a lot of shirts with sleeve tabs you might want to look at them...for short sleeves, i've found a couple of slub tee's that are lightweight and work for hot days...examples of the long sleeve tee's that i find work really well for summer....

I prefer sleeveless or to the elbow usually. Regular short sleeves are usually unflattering on my arms as they hit at the widest part. I prefer a looser fit on my arms also. Actually I like the look of rolled up long sleeves the best, but not when it is super hot. Hmm, not much help!

I love sleeveless tops, and wear them year-round. I like the look of my arms, they're one of my better body parts! I particularly love sleeveless mock or t-necks, but that's just me, I run cold and always like having my neck covered, especially in arctic AC. I can always cover my arms with a big scarf or a thin topper if necessary. I also wear short-sleeved tees, and I'm with Janet in preferring a shorter, angled sleeve, which I find a lot more flattering, than a straight cut sleeve.

I don't wear them all that often even in our high heat. But it's not due to my arms, I have no issue with showing them. My reason is the cold AC issue, but the other is that some sleeveless tops seem to sort of "bunch" at the shoulder areas and I find that it looks messy on me. I don't have a lot of bust to fill them out, or the best posture, which may be a reason for that bunching. If they are quite loose fitting they seem to work better for me and a higher neck is better on some of them. I've only added two to my wardrobe in the last year I think. I actually prefer a lightweight top with either short or 3/4 sleeves in the heat.

Kyle - I never used to wear many sleeveless tops, though I live in a super warm place. I couldn’t wear it at work, and I didn’t like it on myself anyway. I have somehow deemed this summer the year of the sleeveless top. I’ve found a few I like and I’ve just shrugged off my (perhaps valid) insecurities about it all.

That said, this may not be a permanent change. I do find natural fibers work better. I have a couple linen tees, but a knit linen has to be just right or I find it too scratchy. I skew more to knits than wovens, but I’m always on the lookout for a woven summer top. I prefer a detail or print where possible, as I find it adds some extra interest when a topper isn’t feasible.

What a great array of responses, thank you all! I thought there would be more of you who eschew sleeveless tops...so that was a bit of a surprise. Life would be easier if I would just give in and wear sleeveless, but I don’t think that’s going to happen unless my time at the gym leads to some miraculous results. Love all the great ideas and suggestions here...this is why YLF is the best.

Sleeveless in summer is very well accepted in New Zealand for professional dress. So I wear it quite a lot, even although I don’t like the look of my upper arms that much now I’m in my late 50s. It is much easier to find than nice items with sleeves, and since I have some really light summer cardigans I can always cover up a bit more in meetings- sometimes need to in aircon anyway.
I really like the look of small cap sleeves as well if I happen to see them. I was a bit taken with this pretty ruffled sleeve from Angie’s bodysuit post this week.

I’m not a fan of sleeveless unless it’s an underlayer, or I’m on vacation somewhere very hot. In the summer my preference is short sleeve tees with some detail, or lightweight woven tops.

I don’t love the look of sleeveless on me but will do a little if the cut is right. My preference this summer has been to wear an opaque white sleeveless tee (I would not wear this on its own because on me it doesn’t feel flattering) with this kimono. Easy breezy, with good coverage for the sun.

I also like this top for its woven breeziness and good coverage but have found I don’t like it quite as much as the combo.

For years, I avoided sleeveless styles, partly for comfort reasons, partly because they might not flatter my long thin arms. However, during the years, I have acquired quite many sleeveless knit tops and also some sleeveless dresses. And I like dressing in layers, so nowadays I often wear sleeveless styles WITH A TOPPER--anything from a shortsleeved woven shirt or blouse to a light-weight blazer, a cardigan (any sleeve length), or a shawl or large scarf worn over my shoulders and upper arms.

I wear a lot of shortsleeved styles, too (without toppers, if the temperature permits) and a few THIN (see-through) longsleeved styles. When it is really hot, shortsleeved T-shirt styles might not be ideal. In those cases, I find loose shortsleeved blouses and loose shortsleeved knitwear more comfortable.

Few years ago I decided not to wear sleeveless tops and shorts any more. And then this summer we went on a camping vacation that I just returned from. Day before the trip I succumbed and bought 3 shorts and 3 sleeveless tops because that seemed the most appropriate for the weather and occasion. It was a good choice in the end.

I'm still holding out with sleeveless tops, even though my arms are far from Michelle Obama arms, and getting a little less pretty with each year. But I wear a lot of short-sleeved tops and tees. My trick is to stay away from sleeves that end with a flat horizontal cut right across my bustline -- that is the surest way for me to look frumpy. A slightly shorter, ANGLED diagonal sleeve works really well for me. Anytime I can add a bit of vertical emphasis, that seems to be flattering, whether it's on the body or the arm. For instance, on the dress and top shown here in my Finds, I rolled the sleeve and tacked it up one extra roll on the dress, and a couple of times on the top, to create a more flattering effect.

I can get away with a mid-length short sleeve tee if the tee is fitted or collapses back onto the body and it has a V-neck -- the V helps provide that vertical effect and helps me not look too busty and dumpy.

I have been on a many year quest to have some lightweight elbow or longer tops. Mine are from Talbots or Talbots outlet, one from Boden (although it was a very substantial linen or linen blend, not as lightweight as I was looking for) and a few not as lightweight but still on the lighter weight side from Chicos, Steinmart, and J.Jill. I admit, not the most stylish shirts, but they do work in the heat and have some density of color. It is easier to find pale colors.

I'm in the minority. I never ever wear sleeveless!

I used to wear a bit of sleeveless many years ago, but these days I don’t wear sleeveless unless I’m practicing hot yoga or wearing a bathing costume. It’s not a modesty or visual thing, but a comfort preference. I find sleeveless tops and dresses overly breezy on a warm day and particularly uncomfortable in air conditioning. On a hot day, I don’t enjoy the sun beating down on my bare skin. I prefer to cover up in the heat and sun, just like they do in the hottest countries of the world. Instead of adding a topper to a sleeveless item to create comfort, I simply buy tops and dresses with sleeves. I don’t find wearing sleeves under jackets bothersome. I might make the sleeveless exception for a stunning formal gown because I do like the look of sleeveless dresses, but the weather would have to be perfect and absolutely no air conditioning.

I like short, lantern, elbow, flutter and three quarter sleeves in Summer. I wear long linen and cotton sleeves and scrunch them too. This is in 90F to 105F, btw. I spend a lot of time in Salt Lake City these days, where it is much hotter than Seattle.

My high Summer items.

As my hips are slightly wider than my shoulders, I find tank tops to be unflattering on me. I need the outward line on the shoulders that sleeves provide to help balance me out. I have a few for home wear but won’t purchase more.
I also have four sleeveless work dresses that I bought before my revelation. I am trying to wear them out, but they seem indestructible.

I find it easier to find sleeveless tops that come up high under the arm than flattering short sleeves. The “grown on” ( as Angie calls them). Seem the best. I avoid cotton knit tee shirts as hot and not flattering. Sleeveless tops where the edge of the “sleeve” comes just to the edge of the shoulder seem to offer a little coverage. They look like they just shade the top of the shoulder. Right now I am seeing lots of dropped shoulder seams...so sloppy and lazy of the manufacturer to avoid having to fit a garment at the shoulder.

Me too. I look for linen and light cotton long or 3/4 sleeved tunics and pullover blouses (ie/not button downs). I also found a tee with a statement ruffle sleeves at Uniqlo this year and bought two. They had several styles of thick cotton tees that had more presence than your average flimsy tissue weight tee.

I’ve mostly given up sleeveless styles for summer as I don’t find them very flattering anymore, and wonder if there are others here who prefer to have their upper arms covered? If so, what are some of your go-to summer styles? I recently found a J Crew “Perfect” slim cut tee that comes in a wide array of colors and checks a lot of boxes for my casual summer style.
