Yep, I definitely think you are onto something; I too have been only buying top that have some kind of visual interest on their own, so they can be worn as a layering piece or standalone. I love that pink top on you; it's a perfect example! The orange dress is great too.

That top from F21 looks great on you. I tried it on at the store and it looked terirble on me! I tried on a similar style at Old Navy, too, and that also looked terrible on me. I think you're onto something. I do have a lot of sleeveless tops that have some sort of interesting detail, and they are much less boring than a plain one.

I like your epiphany, Alecia. Look for sleeveless tops with interest or add accessories. Easy!

The outfits you posted look great. I think you're right about finding tops with interesting details. It's hot where I am too and feel lackluster in my standard tank top unless I am wearing a necklace to add interest. One of my faves this summer was a printed sleeveless knit tank top from Old Navy that had some gathering around the neck. It was visually appealing enough on its own that I didn't feel like I had to wear any jewelry. Did you try the ruffle tank that Angie blogged about? That seems like it would fit your criteria too.

I really like the pink top on you - the color and shape are all you need on a hot day. And with the dress, the less fussy the better especially in the heat. The sandals with the ankle tie draw the eye downward and it's not the best you could do honestly. You are on to something there.

How long does the hot weather last where you are?

You look great, Alecia! I think you don't need layering here for visual interest. As a matter of fact, if it's really hot out, it make me hot just looking at people wearing too much "stuff" (necklaces, scarves, etc.). The color and the shape of your dress and top add the visual interest, in this case. You can always add a simple necklace for more interest (contrasting shape or color), if you like.

Alecia you look marvellous! I am envying the gorgeous weather youa re obviously expereincing. The dress looks summery and light, and the F21 is a really great shape on you. I really think summer looks are the hardest to pull off, and you have done so in style!!

Hi all -

I've been extraordinarily busy the last few weeks. Lots of good stuff, some bad stuff, too. I guess it's just life. Anyway, I check in regularly but haven't been able to post much.

In one of my last posts, there was a discussion of my frustration with sleeveless tops. I mentioned that I don't wear them much because they don't have the interest layering does. I think my frustration got a little confused. I do often layer sleeveless tops UNDER things. But in our HOT, HOT summers, I'd like to have more options that are sleeveless that I can wear alone, without a covering layer. Doing that with the sleeveless tops that I've got now just seems boring because I lose the visual interest that layering creates. I mostly have boring shells or plain tank tops.

I think I've come to recognize, as I've thought about this, that it's my tops that create the problem. They're just kind of boring. So to avoid boring sleeveless, I need to get sleeveless tops with detail that adds interest. Or figure out a better way of accessorizing. The outfits I'm posting today do that, I think.

Orange dress remix - All on its own this time. The hat (accessory) adds the interest. These aren't my favorite shoes but they were what I had that worked the best. May need to get some new ones. The tie is just not doing anything for my legs. http://i508.photobucket.com/al.....C_1009.jpg

F21 top - This is a top that many of us have. I haven't posted it before but I wear it a bunch. It's great. The draping in the front is the interesting design detail that makes it work by itself. http://i508.photobucket.com/al.....C_1021.jpg

Do you think I'm onto something?
