Back to add that with DHs recent open heart surgery, I kind of wish we, as older people, had bought a bed that can elevate the top section, at least. I had to go buy a big foam wedge to put under the mattress so DH could breathe...a common problem with surgeries and older people. I know many that sleep in a recliner in order to breathe.. One of the things no one tells you about aging. I hope that you like your new bed. Be sure to exchange that mattress if it is not working for you. I like IKEA beds. Our DS and DDIL got one of their bed-in-a box deals for a guest room. The mattress is nice and firm. You can always add a soft mattress pad if guests want something softer. Older bones and backs like firm. If you sink in, you can't get out. I even had the firmest possible inards put in our sofa and chairs and am so glad I did. They are comfortable and old people and pregnant women can get out of them without help.

Well, we made a decision! We bought a Dormeo memory foam mattress with memory foam coils. It’s supposed to sleep cooler than a traditional memory foam one. My husband really liked it for his achy joints. He works in the construction industry and his body takes a beating. If we don’t like it after sleeping on it for 100 nights, we’ll trade it in for a traditional innerspring mattress - a Kingsdown - good support, luxurious pillow top.

I am all about the latex mattresses with wool toppers with minimal flame retardants and treatments. We have an old IKEA one that is great and another one from an online mail order company. Saving up for a SavvyRest to replace our IKEA mattress. You can customize the firmness to your liking.

When we moved we bought the cheapest Sleep Number mattress after several older friends raved about theirs. Love it. You cannot feel your SO move around or even get out of bed. They often have big sales around Labor Day. I use a thick quilted mattress cover on it. A bedding salesman once said never to buy memory foam. Too many complaints and returns. Maybe it is better now.

We have a memory foam mattress that we like well enough. We replaced our old Sleep Number bed with this and are much happier with it.

But we still LOVE our old traditional Serta pillow-top from almost 20 years ago. It’s now our guest room bed because it’s a California king, and we bought a regular king size bed when we moved into this house (the Cal king mattress won’t fit on it), and everyone who stays here raves about how comfortable it is. We like a firm mattress with good support since hubs and I both tend to have back and neck issues.

Anna, I had thought of Costco but I’d like something to last more than 5-6 years. Thanks for letting me know. I don’t mind paying for a good mattress if I know it’ll last 10+ years.

Rachy, your Dux bed looks delicious! I can’t believe you’ve had it for so long! I wish they had a store near me so I could try it.

Xtabay, your Saatva mattress looks very promising. I’m going to show it to my husband and see what he thinks.

MsMaven, I have the similar issue with my husband. I’m sleeping on “his” side right now and I think it’s contributing to my shoulder and hip pain.

Stylefan, we’ve been looking at a Tempur-Pedic. It seems they have reliable techology.

RobinF, mattresses are expensive! I want to make sure I do my homework to find the right one. I’ll be honest, I think the decision is harder now than it was when we bought the last one in our thirties. Now that we’re heading closer to 50, I feel like our aging bodies need a more careful decision and being on the eve of menopause, I don’t want a mattress that sleeps too hot!

cindysmith, that’s encouraging! Can I ask what temperature you generally keep your bedroom at night? I like the sounds of back and neck feel8ng better.

Jaileen, Simmons Beautyrest is readily available around here. We will check it out.

The Cat, I’m impressed that a mattress can last so long. You obviously made a wise buying choice. When you bought it, did you expect it to last that long? Is it memory foam or innerspring?

efbgen, I haven’t heard of Shifman but I’m wondering if the same will be true with these heavily hyped online mattresses like Casper, Endy and the like. I’m familiar with Simmons but I’ll check out Englander. Thanks!

We bought 2 Shifman flippable mattresses last year ( a queen for us and a twin in daughter’s room) which we turn/ flip every month. Sorry to say they are not holding up to hype considering the money.
We have tried several kinds over the years and have not really been happy with any. Both DH and I have back issues.
Next purchase will probably be a Simmons or Englander.
Good luck and hope you have better success.

Love my mattress, and whenever I've been away for some days or weeks, I always look forward to coming home to it. My bed is very wide, so the mattress was custom-made. It was expensive, and I had to wait for it for a couple of months ... However, that was in 1989, and the mattress is still excellent! (Guests who stay here when I'm away tell me that they love it too.) Semi firmness. By the way, I turn my mattress every 3 months.

We bought a new set four years ago. I asked here about memory foam, and consensus was hot! We ended up getting a conventional mattress, Simmons Beautyrest, which is what our old one was. It’s wonderful, but I had to buy new sheets because it’s so much thicker. Also, we ended up having to put a rug in the bedroom, too, because the dog who sleeps on our bed, the Jack Russell, needed a more secure landing after he tweeked his back, due to the increased height.

We sleep on a memory foam mattress, and I love it. Dh & I both have neck & back issues, so it's wonderful for that. It took DH some time to get used to it because he likes that soft feeling of being swaddled that one gets in a pillowtop. We had a down alternative topper when we first got this mattress but it got compressed where we sleep; when we moved to the new house we got rid of the topper.

My biggest surprise has been that DH doesn't feel hot with this mattress, because I had read that memory foam mattresses didn't allow for much cooling. DH runs hot, and can sleep thru most of our winter with a minimum of blanket, so I was expecting to have to hunt down a cooling gel type topper. In the RV, it almost became necessary; now that we're in the much more efficient house, there doesn't seem to be a need for it.

I love how much better my neck and back feel with this mattress.

Good question! I have been looking at mattresses too and they are so expensive. Ours is really old and sags a bit in the middle so it's time but it is hard to know what is good. I have also looked at the online memory foam ones and wondered the same as you about the heat and if it would feel too firm.

We bought our mattress 10 years ago and it was friggin expensive. It is still the most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on. I expect it will last another 10 years. They don't make this type of mattress anymore.
I would consider a Tempura if I was looking for one now. I have heard great things about that brand.

I bought my innerspring mattress and box springs online about 5 years ago from Saatva.com. I wanted something that was organic, and this one is made from 80% organic materials. It's the most comfortable mattress I've ever owned, and Mr. Xtabay and I both love sleeping on it. The mattress that I had before (a Springair) was a problem for me from day one, and I was glad to see it hauled away.

I can't believe how complicated mattress shopping has gotten! I hope you'll let us know what you decide on and how it works out. Good luck with the hunt!

We stopped turning it because I couldn't sleep on the side DH has indented--he weighs a lot more than I do. I'll have to look to see what kind it is.
I will watch this thread and hope learn about the most up to date technology.

I have an amazingly expensive Dux bed. They say people put these beds in their wills, lol. It eliminated a ton of back and shoulder pain. I do need to replace the cotton topper mattress, but the box and mattress are still superior. I bought it 20 years ago.

ps, ‘box and mattress’ aren’t quite the right terms. They’re their own design.

I have a expensive natural latex mattress that has cushioned "cover". I go it from a highly rated local store. Yeah it was frigging expensive, but it helped my back.
My previous mattress from Costco, my Dad talked me into it. It lasted maybe five-six years.
Supposedly the current one will last twenty, if I flip it regularly, which I haven't.

Our current king-sized mattress is almost 9 years old. I’m not sure it’ll make it to 10 years. As a result, I’ve started my research on different mattress products. We currently sleep on a traditional innerspring mattress with a pillow top - what I would call medium firmness. It seems memory foam mattress technology has really expanded and there are more new companies selling this type of mattress than ever before - Casper, Endy, Dormia etc.

My perceived concerns ...
Memory foam = hot ...
and may need to be kept in a room with a minimum temperature of 68-70 degrees to fully function
Innerspring = more pressure points on an aging body

What do you sleep on? Do you love it? Why? How often do you replace your mattress?
