Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Special thanks to Inge and LOP for those links.

Inge, those Ezibuy trouser jeans are very inexpensive and quite tempting so I thought I'd ask Angie what you think of the trouser jean/ tucked in top possibility?

Hi Anne --

As a short waist/long torso/short legs person I feel your pain...if your waist isn't below your breasts like mine, I agree tucking into higher-waisted skirts and pants is something you could look into.

In terms of your jeans outfit --

I'm with others who say the purple top is too long for starters. I think if you fold what's currently showing in half that would be about right.

Your example also uses 3 solids, which is definitely more of a challenge...I find it's easier to do the longer layer/"flash prevention" thing when either my topmost or bottom layer has a print with which I can tone in.

In terms of color, I'll often try to tone in with the lower layer like you're doing with the dark purple/denim [see also grey/black or dark denim/dark brown]. Or I'll use similar colors [reds/purples; blues/greens] or values [pale pink/white; pale blue/lavender] in my top layers to reduce the contrast between them.

Since your purple and pink are pretty similar in intensity, I actually think you could get a much more balanced look if your purple top was shorter and your pink sweater was a cardigan or deep V neck [so there wasn't so much of it!].

anne: I don't think it looks bad, but there's a little bit of issue with colors In my opinion. The bottom layer could have been more visible on top of the jeans. Just a little lighter long layer or lighter pants would make it pop I think. Belting would also help depending on what the layers are.

Being on the tall side, I do this often. My experience is that the color mixing makes the look. The layering color should come back as a surprise element somewhere else in the outfit. I have a large collection of colored camisoles for this purpose. Here are some recent examples:
http://www.legacyofpearl.com/S.....es-8470596
http://www.legacyofpearl.com/Acai-Boost-8402874
http://www.legacyofpearl.com/Shades-Orange-8391089

Hope this helps.

Hi Anne, I tend to agree with the other lasses here, the purple top is a bit too long. Have you tried a slighly shorter top peaking out from under the sweater? And then maybe adding a belt through the belt loops of the jeans?

Or how about a button-down shirt that is a bit longer than the sweater?

I love Maya's suggestion, that would be a great look for you.
By the way: Mango has a pair of trouser jeans on the website at the moment and I bet you could find better priced ones in local shops too.
http://www.mangoshop.com/shop......big.rows_3
(it's the jeans W-D Martina 2 if the link doesn't work)

Oh, Ezibuy has some too:

Maya,
I have been pondering your suggestions. Not sure if I have ever seen trouser jeans here in Aus.

You know my issue here is dealing with 1)the long torso 2) with defining my waist (which gets lost easily) 3) my hips which seem to me to be very long, if that makes sense -I guess I have a long rise and 4) short legs.

Anne, don't give up on this... I think that the layering is a good solution for you, though, if the color of the under-layer is closer in color to the over-layer, so you don't look cut in half. And perhaps not such a long under-layer. You are looking to cover your middle, not emphasize your long torso (although, having such a short torso, I'm envious of those with a long one... sigh, we always want what we cannot have!).
Maybe tie the under-layer color and the over-layer color together with a scarf or necklace... Just some thoughts.

Being long waisted I often seem to end up with tops that are too short to wear with pants. I wondered if this attempt at wearing a long top underneath works?

http://s297.photobucket.com/al.....8;newest=1
