Hi ibbi, that is a tough call, and sometimes you have to just split the difference. Skirts that are simply *straight* cut and not the body-hugging *pencil* will be more forgiving when you are seated, likewise A-lines will give you more fabric for coverage, even if their lengths are equal. I usually shoot for the middle of my knee cap, but this length has been hard to find the last few years. I'm hoping the return of the midi will give us more options!

Also I think it depends on where you have to sit. If you work in a cubicle, or have a modesty panel on your desk, I don't think it matters as much. If you have to sit at a glass topped conference table, that might be a bit trickier!

I wear a lot of skirts and dresses to work and for me, it depends on what I'm wearing on my legs and what type of shoes/boots. If I'm wearing tights and boots, I'm ok with the hem hitting me slightly above the knee so that when I sit and it skooches up a bit, I'm only showing more tights. If I'm bare-legged (summer time) with sandals or pumps, I like the hem to hit me at the knee or even slightly below so when it skooches up when I sit, I'm not showing too much leg.

Great question! I look for skirts with a bit of flare (A-line, pleated, bias cut, etc.) instead of straight or pencil skirts. Even if they're only "to the knee," skirts with some flare tend to drape when I sit instead of riding up and showing thigh. I always test skirts in the dressing room by sitting down in them in front of the dressing room mirror and seeing what happens.

I wear just on/below the kneecap skirts and dresses for work and I just make sure to smooth them down as I sit but I certainly wouldn't want to go any shorter in the work environment.

I wear a low to mid heel (0.5 inch to 1.5 inch) with my skirts (I have a bodgy ankle that just won't take any more than that for a full day).

Good question! I generally wear around-the-top-of-the-knee pencil skirts, and there's no question they ride up a good bit while I'm sitting. But since I'm behind a desk I just choose not to let it bother me. And in general, even when not behind a desk, I am not bothered by a good amount of thigh showing while I'm sitting.

Dear all, the vast majority of outfit photos I have seen are taken while standing.

However, I spend most of my time sitting at work, and a dress/skirt length that looks good standing (for me, at the knee or slightly above) is a bit uncomfortably short and requires tugging when sitting, unless I am wearing black tights in colder weather.

On the other hand, a skirt that approaches the knee when sitting becomes longer than I would like when standing in flats (and I typically do not wear heels).

So for those who wear skirts/dresses and are mostly seen by others while sitting, how do you approach this question of the most appropriate length?
