Anne, glad to see that your program is working well for you, and that you are feeling better as a result.

FWIW, upper arm fat in women (the kind that jiggles) is like hip fat in that storage there is genetically determined. For some, the body will only give up the fat very reluctantly, but it's perfectly safe, and much better than the alternatives! As long as you feel good, that's what counts.

Thanks Dottie - I think we must have similar builds! There's only one time in my adult life there I have even approached having thin legs (when I was 24) and my weight at that point (about 112) is not a feasible goal as I am pretty sure I would look very gaunt in the face at my older age (and I only sustained that weight for 6 months anyway while living in Japan (so no car, not much fat in the diet) AND actively working on it)

I am mainly trying to get my body fat percentage in the healthy range, and my PT seems mainly concerned about my arms (which are a bit of an exception to the weight pattern you described - but quite common in pear shapes I think) I did lose some there, but that's the main place that has too much fat. However I am pretty sure it is one of the safer places to carry excess.

Thanks for the encouragement to keep going.

Great work! Remember, consistency is key! I find that I lose weight in the reverse order that I gain it. I gain weight in my lower body first, then my upper body. When I begin to lose weight, it comes off from the top down. I have to get fairly thin on top before my bottom begins to lose weight. Be patient. It will come.

Thanks Helen. I think in actual fact I lost 3 kilos before Christmas and put one back on over it (It was a 3 month period)!

Yes, as Beth Ann says, you lost weight and decreased body fat over Christmas! Keep up the great work. No matter what one's shape or weight, regular exercise is so important for health.
PS I'm trying to get back in the exercise habit, too.

Hi Beth Ann,
They use the calliper method. They also measured me on a scale which uses biometrical impedance, but I don't think they use that for the calculations. My BF is way lower on the scale!!

I think the callipers do have detractions too, but if you are measured by the same, trained, person you can at least have relatively consistent results.

SandyG - I'll have to take some photos. Thanks for the link!

Beth Ann - thanks for the encouragement. I do usually lose fat there when I lose it (and in the bust too, even more) so I wasn't too surprised. Probably indicates my general pear nature!

I wanted to pop back on and say that to slim down, even slightly, in the belly over the holidays is something to be happy about! You know that you're moving forward with your health, despite your busy schedule.

This 16 week study caught my eye yesterday. It's a different way of "seeing" / evaluating the results of your healthy work So often we dismiss the magical redistribution of muscle and fat because it's a slow process, or we get used to it as our new normal, or get impatient for more results. Capture yourself every week, reflect, and let it motivate you :)

Hi Anne! What kind of measuring device are they using to determine your body fat percentage? Many of these methods are not reliable enough to detect modest changes --- just the big ones. My gym uses biometrical impedance, which can be effected by hydration and even whether someone has recently eaten. Check this out:

http://dailyburn.com/life/heal.....ercentage/

I'm off to the gym myself! Have a great day!

See this thread for the background

http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-an-update

So I had my next evaulation last week. My body fat has gone down 1/2% though I'd lost 2 kilos (I have been doing some sums, and if it had been all fat loss I'd have gone down 3 %, so I wonder if I'm actually losing muscle - though the PT didn't mention anything about that) I lost off my belly button (and most places) but not my hips.

Still, given that I have had a blow to the weightlifting in that I hurt my arm and had Christmas in between, I suppose it isn't too bad. I'm getting a new programme from him on Friday
