tanya, you responded marvelously, thank you i'm the one who needs a little brush up on communication skills!

great. i'm gathering info to eventually buy *a few* nyc autumn essentials to go with my skinny jeans and knee high boots. i have a few thin long sleeved longer black tops as a base layer: br scoop neck & mossimo turtleneck.

this kind of look is quite foreign to my eyes--i've always felt too self-conscious--but i'm ready to take the plunge. hopefully with aplomb.

thank you much once again, i really appreciate your detailed, informative responses tanya!

Hi Cyan, I am glad to help if I can.

I am not sure if I completely understand your question. Are you wondering if it's OK to wear more waist defining and skimming tops with skinnies? If that's the case, than I'd say it depends. For example:

1. If the top in question is long, like tunic, than by all means go for it. Most of my tunics are shirtdresses, and they are not voluminous at all, quite body skimming in fact. Here are two photo's, in the first one the shirtdress had a wide belt, very waist defining, in the second one the cut of the tunic itself is such that defines the waist due to the waistband:

http://s300.photobucket.com/al.....CN2939.jpg

http://s300.photobucket.com/al.....CN2971.jpg

2. For shorter tops, I do prefer the layered silhouette I described in my first response, such as this:

http://s300.photobucket.com/al.....CN2860.jpg

I even wear tops that are not swingy at all, like here:

http://s300.photobucket.com/al.....CN2907.jpg

But with short tops I would not wear something with skinnies that's very waist-defining or tight fitting. So wouldn't wear my favorite wrap tops with them, or say, fitted turtleneck with wide waist-cinching belt. Those are great with bootcut jeans, but with skinnies I end up with a look that's tight all over, which emphasizes the big difference between my waist and hips. That makes me feel like a caricature of an hourglass.

I think that it is great guideline for hourglass to emphasize her waist, but that it can not be applied to every single type of outfit, because sometimes it's not flattering.

Now please tell me that I've understood your question correctly and that I haven't written all of this for nothing

hi tanya, thank you SO MUCH! i love checking our your ylf pics (as well as others)...very beautiful and inspiring. i'll be bringing my boots along today for mission: skinny jeans

just wondering: if one of the main goals of an hourglass is to accentuate her waist, is it ok to wear more skimming tops in addition to skinnes & boots? i've read angie's post on volume (ie, volume on top, structure on bottom & vice versa)...you mentioned the top/tunic options, so i'll be thinking about that as well...

thank you very much again!

Hi Cyan, your body sounds exactly like mine. I am also an hourglass with small chest, skinny chicken calves and bigger hips/thighs. I have also been hesitant about skinnies, but the lovely ladies here convinced me to try and gave me a lot of compliments, so now I wear them pretty often and feel good in them

You can flip through my photobucket albums, they are public, there are a lot of skinny jeans looks in there.

In general, here are some guidelines:

1. The skinnies shouldn't be completely skinny in the calf area, more straight-ish, otherwise the hip/calf difference would be emphasized. I find the leg opening of around 14" to work the best.

2. The safest way to wear them would be with a nice tunic that hits mid-thigh. Shirtdresses work particularly well.

3. They look great with both heels and flats-scrunched up a bit.

4. For colder weather, skinny jeans tucked into boots is a great look. I visited NY a couple of times last fall and it was THE look on the street. The boots were usually flat riding type. The NY ladies wore them with a fitted shorter jacket over slightly longer top ( not tunic), with a big scarf.

5. Shorter tops ( not tunics) can work too, especially if you get the proportions right. The combo that I found works bets form is a longer knitted top, scrunched, that hits me right at the base of the zipper, and than a shorter, slightly swing-y, jacket or sweater over. Extra points if the jacket has 3/4 sleeves so the sleeves from the knitted top peek out. You can add a longer coat over this if weather requires it.

i'm dying to try out skinny jeans with my knee-high 1 3/4" heel boots, but am reading contradictory advice for the look. no skinny legs, curvy body = no skinny jeans?

my calves are pretty thin, but hips/thighs are more on the 'bootylicious' side (hahaha)...what kinds of tops/layering techniques could work for an hourglass body with a very small chest, curvy hips/thighs and thin calves?

i'd like to test this look for my november nyc trip 'uniform' to make packing and thinking easier. i'm lazy!

thank you so much for your input...
